This is a victory for three New Jersey high school students who launched a petition drive calling for a woman to moderate a presidential debate. It’s the first time this has happened since ABC’s Carole Simpson posed questions to former President George H.W. Bush, and his challengers Bill Clinton and Ross Perot in 1992. But Crowley will have a limited role in the way her session goes. It will be conducted as a town hall where vetted audience members ask most of the questions. The Commission On Presidential Debates unveiled its plan this morning. Each meeting will run from 9:00-10:30 PM ET. There’ll be no opening statements by the candidates, but each can make a two-minute closing statement. There are some tweaks from previous debates that “are designed to focus big time blocks on major domestic and foreign topics,” CPD co-chairmen Frank Fahrenkopf and Michael McCurry said. The group will also lead an Internet project designed to help voters understand the issues, and recommend topics to the moderators. Here’s the run-down:
October 3: PBS NewsHour’s Jim Lehrer will handle the first meeting between President Obama and Mitt Romney at the University of Denver. It will focus on domestic policy. There’ll be six segments running 15 minutes apiece on topics that Lehrer will pick, and announce several weeks beforehand. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer the question, and Lehrer will use the rest of the time to lead a discussion.
October 11: ABC News Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz takes the VP debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan at Kentucky’s Centre College. It will cover foreign and domestic affairs with nine, 10-minute segments. Format will be similar to the first presidential debate: Raddatz will ask a question, each candidate has two minutes to respond, and then she will engage them in a discussion.
October 16: CNN’s Candy Crowley will handle a second presidential debate, arranged as a town meeting, at Hofstra University on Long Island. Audience members asking questions will be undecided voters picked by the Gallup Organization. Each candidate has two minutes to respond, and Crowley will have an additional minute to lead a discussion.
October 22: CBS’ Bob Schieffer moderates the third presidential debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. This will be run like the first one, but will center on foreign policy.

So the woman that said picking Ryan as VP was a death wish gets moderate a debate. Oh joy!
+1
This is pretty pitiful. Three debates for the main candidates. They should be doing this every week until November. I hate newt Gingrich with a passion but I sure wouldn’t mind seeing the debate format he proposed out there.
Get those ratings up. Fat chance!
Wow, once again very biased left-wingers there as moderators. The country deserves better.
Groan. Number one: making a big deal about Candy being a woman diminishes her achievements. Number two: If women want true equality, that means no makeup. No bra. No high heels. No purse. Wear a suit & tie and eat a cheeseburger.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make the candidate answer the questions you pose with specificity. It’s time the new media demands answers and stop pandering to the candidates agenda.
Why are there no Conservative journalists/interviewers chosen to moderate one of the debates? I would like to hear questions from both sides. This to me is not fair and balanced.
Given Candy Crowley’s inability to once ask a representative of President Obama today to at least define what statements they considered were lies by Govenor Romney during the debate I think she should rethink accepting the role of moderator. If Jim Lehrer was criticized for losing control of debate one, her clear bias or lack of balance will also be on display if she can’t refrain from repeating what she did today. It was as if she was on MSNBC today and that was not like her generally. Quite alarming
I have heard pros and cons on the health plan.I’ve gone to the government website to review the contents of the plan. It’s overwhelming to say the least especially to wade through the language that is used to describe the plan.I don’t know if it’s good, bad or ugly. Could you pass this question to Candy Crowley. “If this plan is good for all Americans, would all elected government officials including the President on down be required to have this same plan?” Thank you for your time. Robert S Watson Louisville Ky.
I listen to CNN sometimes, but not to Candy Crowley. I know that CNN is a Dem program but I Will not listen to the debate because she will be the promter. Too bad. I don’t know how she got her place on CNN but take a look at her. She always seems unkempt and does not seem to ever change. I am not against her age but take a look at her.REALLY. Her comments are as bad as her looks.
Just can’t get why the Reps allow the dems to have all leftwing people to do all the moderatoring in the debates. I hope you will try to be fair Candy. Knowing the President is down in the polls. It’s media time for you guys to do your work.
Good luck Candy I know you will do a good job…… I hope one of the questions to the Presidents is…… If the Republican Congress had worked with you just one time and had said yes to the jobs bill you sent to them last September how many jobs would have been created and how would that have affected our unemployment rate and our economy?
Can’t you see how ridiculous it is to be concerned with Candy’s looks?? Why do you care what she looks like? Don’t you people have enough faith in your choice for president to believe they will do well in a debate no matter who the moderator is??? Sure doesn’t seem like it. I believe Candy will do a good job.
