EXCLUSIVE: Game Change writer Danny Strong, The Fighter director David O. Russell and Oscar winner Robert De Niro have teamed for a legal drama series inspired by a famous New York father/daughter lawyer duo, which has sold to CBS. The project hails from De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Prods. and CBS TV Studios.
Strong is writing, Russell is set to direct, with the two executive producing alongside De Niro, Rosenthal and Diane Nabatoff. The drama is inspired by the father-and-daughter defense attorneys Murray and Stacey Richman. It will center on a fictionalized version of the Richmans’ Bronx firm, where clients as notorious on the street as they are on Page Six.
In the almost 50 years of practicing law, Murray Richman, nickname “Don’t Worry Murray,” has worked for clients ranging from hip-hop stars like Jay-Z to the upper echelon of the Genovese and Lucchese crime families to former NY Governor Eliott Spitzer’s escort procurer. In addition to his cases, Murray is famous for his courtroom quips, like “I love a murder trial — one less witness to worry about” and “I’ll be brief… I’m already short.” (He is 5’6″). Below is
documentarymaker Errol Morris’ video interview/portrait of Murray that provides a glimpse into his background, philosophy, personality as well as some of his cases. In it, Murray boasts about winning an acquittal for a client who had stabbed a guy to death seven times by convincing the jury that the victim kept “backing into the knife.” Stacey Richman, a star attorney of her own, has a clientele that includes Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Ja Rule, Scout Willis, Kid Cudi and Freekey Zekey.
This marks the pilot writing debut for actor-turned-writer Strong who switched to writing with the HBO movie Recount. It was followed by HBO’s Game Change, both earning him Emmy writing nominations. Strong made his feature writing debut with Lee Daniels’ upcoming The Butler. The CBS drama would make the TV directing debut for O’Russell, an Oscar nominee for The Fighter. The project stems from Tribeca’s overall deal at CBS TV Studios, which already has yielded a series on CBS, last season’s NYC 22. The company’s Berry Welsh will serve as a producer on the new project. Strong, O’Russell and Tribeca are with CAA.

sounds like a good show
Great project – good to see CBS stepping up their creative game.
Could not be happier for Danny! Still see him as the On-Camera/Voice Over Actor he was when I first met him. Thought at the time, “He’s too nice to survive in this business…”
Glad to be proven so terribly, terribly wrong.
Danny’s great. The nicest guy in the world but this isn’t the first pilot he’s ever written. He wrote a pilot for CBS in 2009.
CAST DANNY DEVITO!!!!!!
They should cast Paul and Mira Sorvino as father and daughter!
Love these folks — Go Berry go!!!
How could a jury be so stupid? And a prosecutor be so incompetet? This guy is a sleazy stereotype he’s a criminal lawyer. He backed into the knife seven times?
“Don’t Worry Murray”?
Sounds like he might have been at least partly the inspiration for “Better Call Saul.”
Also sounds like a great basis for a series.
Written by Danny Strong. Based on past performance I predict there will be a litany of falsehoods about prominent Republicans and baseless stereotypes.
Sorry, you got that backwards. From him, there’s been nothing but truth about Republicans in general. When a group of people like Republicans/conservatives is being sociopathic, and Mr. Strong portrays them as such, that’s not a lie – that’s telling the truth.
Look at all the white guys getting hired. The lack of diversity creators is the reason why there’s a lack of diversity Emmy nominees. And the blatantly Industry discrimination continues.
You obviously aren’t in the business and know nothing about it. So this particular show happened to be created by a few white guys. I’m an agent, and the fact is that start dates constantly get pushed and deserving actors get passed over in the networks’ endless push for diversity, at least in casting!!
Good for Mr. Strong! Whenever a “Buffy” alum does well, it restores my faith in humanity just a little bit…
Great video of a charismatic character. This could be hit out of the park…
He even has mannerisms like Robert De Niro…
Sounds like a Savage-ly great show!!
Wow. ANOTHER legal drama on television! Keep those original show ideas coming, folks!
yes– but whats of note is that cbs is taking a risk on a legal show that explores moral grey areas than your standard legal drama where everyone’s a hero week to week. The world — and real life characters– don’t exist in black and white. Strong and Russell’s work and characters sound like a perfect match for this father & daughter.
Press release is incorrect as Strong wrote a pilot for CBS a few years back. This is not his first pilot. No matter he’s terrific but Russell is difficult at best. Hope CBS will take risks with the story telling. They are so boring with their characters having to be light/dark with no shades of grey. The Madonna Whore theory is alive and well and living at CBS.
Perhaps I’ll be watching the greatest show on Earth… Nothing better than a juicy Court Case!! Good luck to everyone…
Mazel-Tov Murray! With all your stories, this show is gonna be a huge success! I’m just jealous that Bobby got it first!!
Love ya pal.

Reading thus far, it seems nobody posting in this forum has had the actual experience of being represented by Stacey or her Father. I have, and she saved my life.
Although I wasn’t a big name, the treatment, care, concern and compassion I received was not based on compensation. Staceys representation in my matter was rooted in just and fair application of procedural law to the highest order.
I still owe her 25,000. But she never mentions it…we just bask in the joy that we won.
18 months of flying back and forth for 10 minute court appearances, 3 indictment threats. A year and a half lost, wondering if I survived Iraq, only to end up in prison and what would that be like.
People fortunate enough to survive Part F NYC Criminal Court without being ground by a system rooted in the crime control model of NYS judicial system know this in no short order.
By-in-large 100 Centre St. is an egopalladium filled and fueled by antiquated relics of the Morgenthau years, masquerading as human beings. These individuals seek to paralyze and strip the practical and logical thought processes of all young ADA’s that attempt goal modification or risk vs. reward.
This show? If done correctly will give NYC its rightful place at the top again in legal drama.
You can make this shit up.
Adore you SR.
“No plea, no deals”
Good Luck Murray!
This has been a long time in the making and no one deserves this more than you do.
Much Love
