CBS has put into development Island Practice, a drama from Mystic Pizza and Beethoven writer Amy Holden Jones. The project, produced by 20th Century Fox TV, Imagine TV and 3 Arts Entertainment, is based on the book Island Practice: Cobblestone Rash, Underground Tom, and Other Adventures Of A Nantucket Doctor by Pam Belluck, which tells the true story of colorful, contrarian doctor Dr. Timothy Lepore who has worked in the upscale island retreat since the 1980s. The TV project, which has received a script commitment, will center on an eccentric maverick who practices medicine on an island off the coast of Seattle using tactics that are frequently as controversial as they are heroic. Jones will write and will executive produce with Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo and 3 Arts’s Oly Obst. Lepore serves as consultant.

I liked this show when it was set in South America and called “Off the Map.”
Are we ever going to get stuff beyond doctors lawyers and cop shows
It’s time for a good medical again. People would watch if it was about the characters.
Off the Map was terrible and had a completely different premise: a big group of do-gooder doctors-without-borders types move to the wilds to help poor natives. This sounds more Northern Exposure – lone doctor on an Island community dealing with locals of all income levels. It’s set off Seattle.
ISLAND DOCTOR: Nantucket Island doctor uses controversial tactics to help patients.
ROYAL PAINS: Hampton’s doctor uses controversial tactics to help patients.
This doesn’t sound anything like ROYAL PAINS, which has a concierge doc for the rich and peculiarly unsympathetic main characters, on the other coast. Besides, the book ISLAND PRACTICE is milk-snortingly funny. Would be great to see Underground Tom and the narcoleptics (maybe that’s a good name for a punk band?) as recurring characters.
If they concider touching episodes that will contain narcoleptics, I am the one who is that book that has Narcolepsy, And the reason Let myself be put into that book is because I thought it would be a good way to get more awareness for Narcolepsy. It may seem funny to those who read the chapter that I am in, but please keep in mind that its a real condition it my not be life threatning but living with this condition has been and still is a journey and learning experience in each day we Narcoleptics live. Most importantly We Narcoleptics do not want to be made into jokes yes I laugh at my condition but only because I have to and thats the only way to get through each day when ever my Narcoleptic attacks happen. So when this is made into a tv show and the show has Narcoleptics having Narcoleptic attacks in random areas around the town /random scenes, When you laugh, keep in mind, We laugh because it is the only way we can live with this. we only joke about the different places we have had attacks in is just to make our lives brighter there are days when I do want to cry but I choose to laugh instead crying will not help this is for those who do not understand Narcolepsy Cataplexy. I just want to make sure that I and my fellow Narcoleptic friends are showed respect when this tv show is made and if they decide to put in scenes with Narcoleptics having the attacks. keep in mind of what life is like for us when you laugh at those scenes
Write to CBS. Ask them to make this show with input from Narcolepsy Network, one of the organizations committed to raising awareness and fighting misinformation. It’s possible to show narcolepsy with compassion and respect, and while it may seem funny to people, it’s hell to those who live it. Letting them know would be a good way to encourage this- and while you’re at it, ask your friends and family to write. A public discussion about this can only be a good thing, and if they know that the public cares about this, it may help sway how the character is represented. Your letter may carry a lot of extra weight sine you’re the person in question!
Considering Dr. Lepore was my doctor when I lived on Nantucket, this is very exciting. And if they depict him just like he is, it will be funny as well.
