The London Olympics ended on a sour note in terms of coverage. And some audiences blamed NBC and DirecTV for spoiling their last hours of viewing. The Numbskull Broadcasting Company once again edited the heck out of its tape-delayed primetime broadcast Sunday night of the Closing Ceremonies. The network cut performances by The Kinks’ Ray Davies, Muse, Kate Bush, the Royal Ballet, and Eric Idle singing a swear word. The network also decided George Michael performing a track from his new record wasn’t worth sharing with America. (NBC did include Michael’s rendition of his classic ”Freedom”. Some bigwig must be a fan of the song…)

But NBC’s most controversial move was to squeeze in a commercial-free preview of Animal Practice before airing The Who’s grand finale. It fell to poor put-upon NBC Olympics host Bob Costas to make the following announcement to viewers: ”We’ll be back from Olympic Stadium in about an hour for the London closing party featuring The Who. But stay tuned now for a full episode of Animal Practice, the new NBC comedy presented commercial free.” The network brass changed plans to air Crystal The Monkey et al after the closing ceremony. Granted, the embattled network is desperate for more eyeballs for its 2012-2013 primetime. But NBC forfeited audience goodwill last night. Viewers were merciless on Twitter at #NBCfail and #closingceremonies.
In the Los Angeles area, DirecTV subscribers watching NBC’s last hours of Olympic coverage in HD experienced a 30-minute service outage. Some claimed to have missed the Spice Girls and Eric Idle. A message on the screen instructed viewers to change their settings and switch to the SD feed of Channel 4. As if most people are that tech savvy. KNBC sent out this tweet to its customers: ”Sorry for the @NBCLA outage with @DIRECTV. We’re working to get it resolved as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.” And DirecTV later apologized with this statement: “A technical issue at our broadcast center caused a brief disruption of the Los Angeles-based NBC HD signal this evening. The signal was down for approximately a half hour and was restored at 10:06 PT. We are looking into the cause and apologize to those customers who were affected.”
Back to NBC primetime, Ray Davies didn’t perform “Waterloo Sunset”, there was no dance piece to Kate Bush music, and George Michael was not seen singing a second song. The Muse was an odd cut because the group is fairly well-known Stateside from their Twilight Saga soundtracks. (Not just because they wrote the London Olympics theme song, or because the lead singer dates actress Kate Hudson.)
Also edited was Eric Idle singing “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” from the iconic Monty Python movie Life Of Brian. He’s clearly heard cursing on the song lyric, “Life’s a piece of shit when you look at it,” on the NBC live-stream. But the network bleeped the swear word for the primetime broadcast.
U.S. viewers also didn’t hear UK officials thanking the volunteers, which prompted Olympic Stadium to erupt into thunderous applause. And deleted were some performance art pieces: one where a pyramid was built, and another of a phoenix with dancers dressed as flames.

NBC did a horrible job and people deserved to watch the whole thing like the rest of us. But at least they cut the right things:
There isn’t an event in the world that isn’t ruined when an artist decides to sing “my new single” when nobody’s ever heard of it. He could’ve sung Faith or another recognizable song, this wasn’t the time for new singles…or maybe just sing Freedom and let somebody else perform longer.
The official song of the olympics by Muse couldn’t be worse. So nobody missed anything there.
The worst thing they did was the Animal Practice airing before The Who, that will cost them.
Oh, for SURE that will cost them! I recorded it, and figured The Who was on at the end, but I just happened to turn on my TV around midnight, and low and behold saw The Who playing Baba O’Riley, which I assume was their first song? I thought it was a news report, but when they went on for a few minutes, realized that this was when they were broadcasting it-who the hell knew that? And I managed to see the rest, Live, but at least I didnt miss it. I would have REALLY been a mad mofo if I didnt tape or watch Thw Who-bad enough they cut out the Ray Davies, and I wanted to hear Muse sing Victorious, but apparently they didnt, did they?
The worst thing the did was not airing Animal Practice in the middle of the Closing Ceremonies. It was greenlighting the show to begin with. What a disaster of a pilot. I truly feel sorry for Joanna Garcia and Tyler Labine. Both of them deserve MUCH better than this show (and their last three shows). Here is hoping NBC puts a quick end to the trainwreck and they get better vehicles.
These types of news stories always crack me up. Who cares about everybody blowing up Twitter and Facebook? That’s what people live to do now. No matter what they blow it up. And, NOBODY is going to say, “Screw any of NBC shows because they interrupted my viewing of the closing ceremony’s.” People won’t even remember what they actually SAW on the ceremony in a few months. Pretty sure you can’t find ONE person that remembers everything about the closing ceremony’s for the Bejing Games.
NBC screwed up….again…oh well. It’s really a non story.
I am going to say that, actually. I am done with NBC. They have completely ruined the olympics with their pathetic, spoilerific coverage and shamelessly shoving their new terrible shows down our throats. I don’t even care about the shows that I like anymore on NBC. They are no longer getting my viewership.
Ditto. And those commentators often talked over the opening lines of the performances, not to mention they didn’t give a couple of the Spice Girls their names. Didn’t they know them? And to cut out The Who! Unconscionable. I saw pics of the pyramid being built but was disappointed that it wasn’t broadcast. Where can we see the entire of the closing ceremonies? I tried BBC but it’s only available in the U. K. Rio has so much show-biz to offer – please don’t let NBC cover it. If necessary, lengthen the program to allow full coverage, allowing time for commercials. And will any of us ever watch Animal Practice? I feel sorry for the stars of that show – remember the Heidi Super Bowl interruption years ago? NBC was the culprit there, too. Didn’t they learn anything??????
Im still looking to see where I can find it-damn sure cant see it on Hulu-but after all, thats only a company that NBC friggin owns! Please let us know where, if you findout, and I’ll do the same, cause Im STILL madder than a dog in heat!
Actually, you’re wrong.
My husband and I DID say ‘screw NBC shows’ and we turned off their ‘free’ TV show and we refuse to watch NBC anymore. We barely watched it anyway, and now we’re done.
And when we did come back, we never saw the Who. So NBC once again screwed everyone up royally. Any idea how we can contact the US Olympic Committee and ask them to NEVER cut a deal with NBC again for Olympic coverage?
NBC has the broadcast rights to the Olympics through the 2020 Games.
By 2016, never mind 2020, all these complaints about tape delay will probably be moot because by then we’ll probably all be watching TV online anyway. The way things are going, the days of mainstream broadcast networks are numbered (which is a shame because a) I like free stuff and NBC is free for most people and b) I recently got a big plasma set but I’ll probably end up having to buy a tiny iPad to watch regular TV).
The Null Brains Company my have the rights to broadcast olympics through 2012, But will the u s government bail them out like they did the car companies? The networks are noting but lame reality shows and blizards of annoying and repetitive comercials. More and more are dropping Satellite and cable and streaming. I watch TV from around the world free. Networks have not grasped the concept of time shifting and watching what you want from whomever is showing it whenever you fell like it. “Primetime” is a relic from the last century.
Well, I think you are very wrong here. NBC is an example of all that is wrong with television. Too many adds, poorly placed and then sticking something in the middle of something great for a cheap-shot at a new show. This is why I watch either online or Netflix or most anything else except the lower channels…which seems to equate lately with lower IQ along with the channel number itself.
And NBC for future reference…No Bob Costas. We’re tired of the Dick Clark wannabe of sports with the fake black boy-scout hair.
I hate NBC for the Olympic coverage and for the terrible website (why CAN’T I watch the whole closing ceremony online?) but please, spare Bob Costas. It’s nice to have a guy who knows something about sports in the general coverage.
I wish Britain was spared George Michael singing a second (new) song.
I think that was the only right move NBC made during the entire Olympics. I didn’t need to see that guy at all.
Luckily, I was watching the live feed on my iPad app, so none of those edits applied. I do agree it’s not a smart move to interrupt the ceremony with a TV show — the equivalent of a company filling its brand’s Twitter feed with selling-type tweets. Would’ve been more palatable had they planned to show it afterward all along. The closing ceremony should be given precedence, as should revered bands like The Who.
There’s a “Boycott NBC’s Animal Practice” page on Facebook. Go like it and strike back.
Anyone who watched animal practice, i doubt they would return anyway. NBC must not know comedy.
With 11 Likes so far… I’m sure NBC are quaking in their boots!
I’m hoping after that stunt this show doesn’t even make it past one more viewing
I took advantage of NBC offering up the closing ceremony live online. It began at 4:00 PM EST and ended just after 7:00 PM EST. Excellent coverage, uncut. One British announcer and one Australian announcer made spare, insightful remarks. No insipid Bob Costas or incredibly annoying Ryan Seacrest. Saw every second of the ceremony. No edits, no cutting to “Animal Planet Goes to the Doctor.”
Then after 7:00 PM began watching pre-recorded NBC coverage. Abysmal. Turned it off after 20 minutes, after noticing major gaps and edits.
Unless the creative folks at NBC learn a lesson, rinse and repeat in Rio . . .
NBC sucked last week, they suck this week, they’ll suck next week. Let’s move on.
If they are not gonna show it, they should show it at another time. Animal practice was not worth it.
The nice thing is that we have 4 years to find all the other ways that it will be possible to watch the Olympics and avoid the Numbskull network’s coverage. Hopefully, by 2016, we’ll be able to watch live feeds from the cell phones and tablets of spectators in the stadiums. Commercial and edited free.
I’ll tell you one thing-We WONT be fooled again!
I see what you did there.
The problem is NBC is going to a conclude that they must have done a good job because the ratings were great, failing to recognize that the ratings were great because people love the Olympics and they got a monopoly on coverage. If their goal is to only break even in the Olympics and use it as a promotional platform, they should be focused as much or more on brand perception and quality rather than raw ratings. They’ve been perceived as being in the crapper for years on those metrics and they just wasted a great 2 week opportunity to show people who have long since turned them off that they are a network that matters. Watch as no one gives their fall schedule the time of day, yet again.
It’s almost as if NBC’s management thinks it’s mandate is to anger and annoy audiences as much as possible.
Also, the ads for Animal Practice look like something you would see in a movie or TV show about really bad network management decisions.
Not promising.
NBC also cut the medal ceremony for the Men’s Marathon, which was done as part of the closing ceremonies. I guess because an American athlete did not medal, it didn’t happen!
Leave Kate Bush and cut Kaiser Chiefs and Oasis.
Here’s to hoping a real network like CBS can come in and do a better job someday.
The previews of NBC’s fall lineup are underwhelming. Glad to know the other nets can still develop.
CBS carried the coverage for the 98 Nagano Winter Olympics. It was a ratings disaster.
It was interesting – we had the live stream up on the big screens during the day and watched it. NBC cut out a lot. It also seemed like they repackaged some of it and aired items out of sequence? Odd. And – why? Trying to tailor it for the “American audience” is b.s. If it comes down to time – okay I SUPPOSE I can see that but haven’t that scheduled 20 billion hours across all NBC networks the past couple of weeks? Who cares about shaving off minutes? Does that really matter for an event like this? Saw the 2nd George Michael song – at first none of us liked it – then it got okay. I believe there was ALSO a beautiful montage shown inside the stadium of all the athletes that they cut, could be wrong on that but that piece of footage was beautifully edited. This may have been NBC’s practice in the past but in this day and age they really need to re-think this. Sitting down to watch the prime time broadcast (we like Costas okay shoot us), we were surprised so many things missing. And damn still a very misplaced Ryan Seacrest. At one point it seemed it was just Seacrest? So strange.
Unfortunately for us NBC could care less about what we all think. They are looking at the ratings and calling their efforts a huge success. At the end of the day they are just another greedy corporate entity only concerned with numbers.
#CLUELESS!
Money money money, God bless America.
Why not move to the UK where they FORCE THE ENTIRE POPULACE to pay for the BBC?
Funny how that works…
i’m a brit living in LA and i really miss the BBC. they have integrity and intelligence and treat the audience with respect. they have to – the people own it!
Don’t think you’re getting NBC for free!!
i’d rather pay an annual fee and have some control than get violated by mainstream US TV.
Agree. We watch more TV that we pay for (i.e. HBO) than we ever watch of NBC. As a matter of fact, if we watch any network TV, it’s CBS. I love the BBC too. However what we get here is an Americanized version.
Yeah, and we get brilliant coverage. Much better than any commercial service would provide, and at a tiny fraction of the price we would have to pay if Sky snapped up the rights (which would happen if the licence fee were ditched)
What a shame. The “forced” population gets countless channels, commercial free, and censorship free. I’ve spent many of hours watching fine programming from the BBC. You pay a TV license fee yearly, which brings the country some of the best programming in the world and unlike this country, you can have a variety of high-end television without subscribing to any other service.
You are right, this was also a very moving moment below they also cut out that we saw on the live feed – one person here had a tear in her eye! Friends actually there told us later that was a very moving moment.
“U.S. viewers also didn’t hear UK officials thanking the volunteers, which prompted Olympic Stadium to erupt into thunderous applause.”
Why in the world would NBC cut that? Just air the f–ing thing. And that stunt at the end was SO desperate with the new show. Just desperate.
Apparently nobody remembers the Vancouver closing ceremony because they did the SAME THING — moved the end (with NBC’s superb closing credits montage) to late night and cut it up, and aired a “preview” of a new show (the godawful Marriage Ref) around 10:30-ish instead.
That said, I can’t go crazy with outrage for two reasons –
1. The closing ceremony in London just sucked. One musical act after another = absolute tedium. I feel bad for people who cared about The Who, but trimming a George Michael new single? Really? Oh that’s SO outrageous!
2. Nobody ever says SHIT on network television. That’s a given, everyone knows it. This isn’t basic cable. Why even mention it?
Chicago Hope famously used it in 1999.
I’m sure all the competitors didn’t mind all the music. Realistically, the closing ceremony is more for the participants than the audience.
Surely NBC knows they pissed a lot of people off buy shutting down the Olympics to force feed their un-funny new sitcom to the American public. That piece of shit will be cancelled by the end of October.
BTW, why is it the British can handle the word shit on TV and Americans can’t?
Canadians can handle it
Thank God I watched the bbc live London feed in real time as yet again NBC butchered it. And don’t get me started on the Directv outage, thirty min my eye! It was gone for the rest of the broadcast but managed to magically appear for Animal Practice. What a JOKE
You know, cutting the Spice Girls is not necessarily a bad thing. Just saying.
Can we find the Davies’ performance anywhere?
NBC should have disclosed that what audiences were seeing was a heavily edited version of the live event.
To cut Ray Davies singing “Waterloo Sunset” was especially heartbreaking to me. Glad I saw it on the live feed from BBC.
Using The Who as bait to get people to watch your new show is just mercenary and not in the Olympic Spirit.
Im dying, slowly, on the inside-Im just weeping THINKING of him, after all these years, singing Waterloo Sunset, and I missed that!NBC is truly un-fuckin-believable!
As for Animal Practice, yeesh. In the first ten minutes we learn that the these two used to be in a relationship and now may have to work together (so we know there will be tension!!!), plus there’s a monkey (so we know there will be hilarity!!!).
One thing we know there won’t be is originality.
