Primetime is not good news for CNN lately. Amidst having its least watched month in primetime in two decades in May and the lowest rated month in total viewers in 10-years in April, CNN has now hit a 20-year all time primetime weekly low. The latest fall came during the week of July 30 to August 5, 2012. Both primetime hosts Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan were on full time duty that week, with no substitutes. The decline was among total viewers and the key 25-54 demo. During the week of July 30 to August 5, Piers Morgan Tonight at 9 PM averaged 314,000 viewers overall, with a mere 81,000 in the 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen. That average is the lowest week Morgan has had since he took over Larry King’s spot on January 17, 2011. During the same time slot over on Fox News, Sean Hannity averaged 1,749,000 total viewers and 324,000 in the 25-54 demo. On MSNBC, The Rachel Maddow Show averaged 933,000 total viewers that week, with 271,000 in the key demo. Bookending Morgan’s show, Anderson Cooper 360 at 8 PM averaged 349,000 viewers for the week, also with 81,000 in the demo. Cooper’s 360 10 PM repeat had 97,000 among the 25-54 demo, the sixth lowest the network has had in two decades, but a slight 259,000 average total viewers for the week. That averaged total viewership was the lowest 10 PM weekday hour CNN has had in 20 years. These numbers also came just days after CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton announced on July 27 that after nine years he’ll be leaving at the network at the end of the year. At the TCA earlier this month, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes told the audience that “we are not satisfied with CNN’s ratings performance and we are focused on fixing it.” There’s a lot to fix. Besides the other plummeting numbers, in late June CNN registered its lowest-rated quarter in primetime since 1991. In terms of ratings and viewers, Fox News is the number one news network in America, followed by MSNBC and then CNN in third place.

Piers Morgan is the worst.
Piers is a biased boring empty suit. CNN ratings deserve to be at zero.
That becasue the news is not interesting anymore, therefore let make up the news and the lies and glorify Obama like he is the saviour and he can do nothing wrong.
Report the facts and let the people decide, but Fox get in trouble becasue they report both side of the story, see plenty of Donkey on those shows
CNN, FOXNEWS, and the rest of MSM are terrible. Fox lies, CNN is confused, and MSNBC loves Obama as much as Foxnews hates him.
American MSM is propaganda for our slower citizenry.
I think the lack of content on either side of the channel is due to the fact that it’s advertisement driven.
P. Morgan is extremely boring and “all knowing”. He won’t let people answer the stupid questions that he asks, and attempts to put words in the mouths of his guests. I think his show is a total waste of my time. Anderson Cooper is determined to try and force his liberal views on the audience. He can be informative at times, but I am not a fan of his, nor his lifestyle.
In short, CNN and Fox try to force their politics on the audience 24/7 and I am tired of media over-steppng their boundaries. We are in sad shape in this country as far as our media is concerned. It has become all propoganda, and not informative, objective reporting. Obviously the break-down stems from the upper ranks of the organizations, run by weak-minded executives.
Everyone tht’s surprised by the story line, raise your hand for a head count……just as I thought, a negative number.
I blocked both CNN and Headline news on my cable box after the Palin stupid girls stunt now that I know how to do that I have a slew of channels I and my family will no longer be watching. They got several chances to earn my trust and kept insisting their job was to either ridicule my values or change my views versus just telling what the heck was going on in the world.
I rarely watch CNN because I prefer the professionalism of Fox News. However, the night…after the shooting at the Sikh Temple…I switched over to CNN because Fox was airing a re-run and the CNN weekend announcers were absolutely awful. They appeared and sounded like something you’d see on TV in a small city.
You know, there was a time when CNN was good and was unbiased and the only game in town but they went to the dark side. Actually, CNN morphed into Fox News: Lou Dobbs, Gerri Willis, Greta Van Sustern, John Roberts, Bill Hemmer (I’m probably leaving others out) all left CNN and went to Fox News because they saw that Fox was “fair & balanced”.
R.I.P. CNN.
Your right about CNN but you think FOX is any different? Both are propaganda machines. Please dont fool yourself about FOX!
Golly! We have an intelligence gap.
O’Reilly, Hannity, and Greta are not news programs and they
tell you that. They are commentators. They do have news
programs and those programs are good. Raise your IQ’s a
notch or two and understand the difference between news
programs and commentators. It’s really not that difficult if
you try.
Fox “professionalism”? Really? FNC was the last network to break into coverage of the Sikh shooting, and instead of providing local video from a local affiliate, they played a montage of stills during a very awkward interview with an unprepared correspondent from Patch.com instead. As for their regular political coverage, perhaps you meant you preferred their partisanship?
What professionalism?
CNN is not only tired but predictable. Their extreme liberalism is out of step with the majority of Americans. Wolf Blitzer and the so-called Situation Room should be in the Smithsonian. New talking heads won’t fix the problem. The entire broadcast schedule needs to be scrapped.
News is like WWE Wrestling.
Nobody watches the news for unvarnished, unblemished information the way nobody watches WWE for the wrestling.
News today is News Entertainment, much like the WWE Wrestling Sports Entertainment.
CNN needs to be flashier, more tabloidish, over dramatic commentary if their going to gain more viewers. People don’t care about logic, if they did, they would watch the Mathematics channel, people care about a primitive emotional connection. CNN needs to understand its audience better the way Fox News and MSNBC does.
Nobody watches cable news anymore! And anyone who does needs to get a life.
They are controlling your mind people! Turn on the history channel or the cartoon network.
Sorry – all that history was boring, so now the History Channel offers us Pawn Stars and American Pickers. Gack!
Thank you for making my day, cnn msnbc both abc nbc cbs, all do a disservice to viewers by being one sided in there news. What ever happened to the news, they should report not try to make the news, for there agenda. Joe
I was not a particular fan of Larry King, but it appears his absence is part of CNN’s problems, at least with a certain demographic. I am not saying bring Larry back, but I don’t find his successor of any interest either. (Personally, I can’t stand watching Piers Morgan, so that is one reason I have no interest in their prime time programming. Wasn’t Morgan formally an editor of one of Rupert Murdoch’s tabloids? Maybe that’s why he is so annoying.)
CNN seems to have no ideas on how to program in prime time, so maybe they should just stick to their original 24-hour news format. Broadcast and cable are inundated with too many talkers, with more to come (Katie, Jeff, Rikki). Please, no more! Yes, these are less expensive alternatives to, you know, CREATIVE and ORIGINAL programming, but just how much are we supposed to endure? Does Anderson Cooper really need two talkers – syndicated and CNN? Yes, the CNN talkers are more “news-lite”, but it is still just a talk show. CNN would be better off just showing old episodes of 60 Minutes or 48 Hours or even Dateline.
When CNN starts producing original movies, you’ll know they’ve run out of ideas.
So the old geezer wasn’t pulling in the ratings, and the insufferable pompous British guy is doing even worse. Maybe they can get that Robert Gibbs to host. I’m sure he would be better. No wait! Get the guy who harassed the Chick-fil-a girl to host the slot. I hear he needs a job.
HA!
I actually tuned into Morgan to hear his interview with Scalia. Morgan simply wasn’t intelligent enough to carry the conversation. Forget about his researchers and writers, Morgan couldn’t formulate responses to the Justice’s comments. Enough of Morgan already. He had his chance–deserved or not–CNN needs to move on.
Same story, same headline every month; only the numbers get updated.
And that’s as it should be.
This is CNN.
Well not exactly updated, I would have used downgraded.
ok, can somebody tell me the upside to having piers morgan on cnn? there must be one, at least in someone’s opinion.
Better than BIG Ed or bad hair day Rachel! Somebody should send these people a history book with chapters on Yellow Journalism
It’s simply that there is no “upside” to Morgan. He’s totally uninteresting.
i am not old..but i would always check larry king to see who was one, prob watched 2-3 nights a week.. i HATE piers morgan with his stupid pursed lip smile and righteous attitude..i have NEVER watched him..just a bit here or there to confirm i dont want to watch, so i never see anderson either, used to leave him on after larry.
BIG mistake they made getting rid of larry for piers.
Didn’t know why they put Piers Morgan on in the first place and can’t understand why they keep him on. I like CNN but I NEVER watch Piers Morgan and never will. He wasn’t too popular in the UK, right? So why did they hire him?
Piers Morgan was loathed, hated, vilified, despised and abhorred in the UK. He timed his exit brilliantly and whoever at CNN hired him clearly did no research into the man and his capabilities beyond asking him, “Do take cream?” His equally popular wife writes a column for the Daily Telegraph newspaper, thus keeping the back door open for him. Don’t fire Morgan CNN, just take him way out into the desert and do what you have to. Better yet, do it on air and watch those ratings skyrocket.
i am still waiting for the white in america special…
Me to.
Don’t hold your breath
me three!!!
I’m sure their down fall has nothing to do with liberal bias…I’m sure of it.
Yawn.
This is nothing to do with CNN’s supposed liberal leanings.
It has everything to do with borning, milquetoast programming. They need to shake things up.
Yawn.
Why – because you said so? It’s been well documented, every legit poll shows a majority of Americans see and disapprove of the bias but you’ve decided it has nothing to do with it. The media in general are down, the credibility of so called journalists is in the toilet – but you’ve decided it has nothing to do with their obvious liberal bias.
Typical cnn viewer!
Of course this has nothing to do with their liberal leanings. They lost any conservatives that actually still watched in 2008. Then they started losing independents when they continued to lean farther left.
They are so far left now, the only MSM ahead of them is MSNBC and they seem determined to be #1.
You are absolutely right!!! But, those idiots on the other station(MSMBC) to me are far worse and contempable.
They will never get it!! I know…I used to be a head in the sand democrat…who knew nothing. I opened my eyes, and would never vote that way again, and certainly am turned off by the bias and arrogance on these channels.
Perhaps the reason is that each show in primetime is a repeat of the show before it, just with another pretty face framing it? Even the talking head regulars rotate from show to show and then they bring on the special guest (usually from the right) who they all criticize. It’s all so predictable that people have realized you gain nothing by watching all the shows, you only need to see one.
CNN= Crappy News Network
Work’s for me. It couldn’t happen to a more deserving network.
Well as much as everyone hates fox news if i was in charge of CNN I would have someone anyone watching foxnews to see why everytime the ratings come out FoxNews is #1 you might not like Oreilly (gets on my nerves) but he is #1 you might not like Hannity(sometimes i do) but he is #2 all the time wake up CNN this was your idea anyways sigh I used to watch CNN got tired of democrats do no wrong and excuse me but all the specials on gay community
how about Fair and Balanced of course you need to come up with your own slogan, Good luck hate to see you suffering
What do you expect, with Anderson Cooper there?
As I stated before, I am a reformed democrat. I love Fox!!! Why don’t you stop with your talking points…you sound like Wasserman Schultz or Axelrod. Fox hasa a diverse array of dems to voice their opinion, and is balanced. Laughing are you??? Fool.
Seriously, I can’t believe how incompetent these people are now! It’s like they are George Costanza BEFORE he started “doing the opposite.” Everything you think is right, Do the opposite, CNN! (Did anyone in America have high hopes for Parker/Spitzer?) Imagine a CNN with shows hosted by the likes of John Stossel, Mark Steyn, Hugh Hewitt (right wing partisan but the best interviewer in the business), plus you’ll still have the Anderson Coopers and, ahem, Piers Morgans of the World.
Only watch CNN during a breaking crisis — hosts too liberal/ DNC talking points day in /day out.
They are the best at breaking news around the world. Crisis, disaster, war..etc other than that though..
Except when it comes to Supreme Court rulings.
No the best is Euronews
CNN’s ratings reflect their content and lack of character. This could be corrected if they simply report the facts and quit spinning the information to support a failed agenda.
Who is the most knowledgeable and least boring:
Anderson Cooper, Piers Morgan or Wolfe Blitzer? This is a very tough call. I would eliminate The Wolfeman first, because he has dillusions of adequacy. He is a better fit on Jeapordy, NOT! Piers wants to succeed so badly, but his leftist leanings color his interviews. Anderson is the best of the three, but that is really not saying a great deal.
Well said. I find the entire network “show” comical now. The latest bust on fake “Danny” was sublime. I find it encouraging that adding up all the numbers from all the networks including Fox is still a small percentage of our population. RIP.
There is nothing wrong with Wolf Blitzer. He does a good job. Piers needs to go back to America’s Got Talent. That’s where he belongs.
I used to watch CNN almost exclusively. I knew that that the major networks, ABC,NBC,and CBS, were worthless, MSNBC was comically left wing, and Fox was tilted right wing. I quit watching CNN during the 2008 presidential election when I realized how vigorously they were promoting Obama. Since then, I’ve been getting my news from various internet sites, and sometimes Fox… Even though Fox is right wing, they’re up front about it, and report ALL the news, whether they like it or not. I’m bitter about CNN. Never again will I fall for their drivel.
I hear you. It was simple for me when I used to watch, if a republican was president, watch MSNBC, if democrat, watch Fox. Now it doesn’t matter, they’ve just devolved too much for anyone to care.
tell me what is rightwing?
FOX news is NOT up front about being a shill for the republican party. they still try to pretend their fair and balanced
I feel the same way. Even big events like the CO shooting felt slanted. I don’t feel I can trust anything they report on anymore.
“It must be because Larry King is gone.” “It must be their particular news format.” “Maybe it’s their logo.” CNN is a BLINDINGLY biased, endlessly liberal—-and, might I add, marginally talented network. It’s that simple.
I saw a single piece on CNN while overseas: someone (Piers Morgan?) inteviewing, of all people, Ted Turner.
“Tell us Ted, what makes you so gosh darned magnificent, and doesn’t it make you proud to have founded the most spectacular and unbiased news organization in human history?”—That was the sort of hard hitting, objective tripe that I last saw on CNN before taking an antinausea med to ward off the effects.
Dull. Biased. Shameless in their conservative-baiting. Whine all you want about Fox, but: numbers men something. MSNBC is sliding to the bottom along with CNN, and good riddance to both.
I wonder what kind of “intro” music should be played just before one reads this article?
CNN is declining because just like the 3 networks, they have been very selective in what they report, or more telling, in what they DON’T report. I think most people are wising up to their blatant pro Democrat bias. There have been so many stories I’ve read on other news sites (even international sites) that are covering info CNN just refuses to cover.
Soledad O’Brian is a joke, her bias is so obvious. Think the hens are coming home to roost.
ROFLMAO !!!!!
People clearly have little interest in CNN as it now is programmed. I suppose that some are tired of the bias. Some are tired of no-news and news-lite. Some are tired of seeing lame-brained talking heads ineffectively reading poorly written and inaccurate lines from a screen. Some do not like the various biased, ignorant, and untalented personalities which CNN foists off on the public as supposed journalists. While some may disagree with my analysis, the numbers speak the truth.
I travel overses fairly often and unfortunately thats the only English channel they have. Want to watch the same news over and over and over and over and over oh excuse me I was being repetitive just like CNN.
What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.
Sinking they are! Soon only there extremist left wing tentacles will be above water. Is anyone surprised that CNN or as we call them the Obama Election team is going down the tubes?
Could it be that people have tired of the transparent, ideological propaganda CNN spews forth 24×7? Methinks so.
