It’s believed to be the first time that DirecTV has lost subscribers in the U.S., and the drop — of 52,000 to 19.9M — was bigger than many analysts expected. In Q2 the satellite company generated $716M in net income, +1% vs last year, on revenues of $7.2B, +9.5%. The revenue figure is right about what the Street anticipated. But earnings at $1.09 a share were short of the $1.14 consensus figure. (There’s no mention of the recent battle with Viacom, which took place in Q3.) DirecTV says that the U.S. sub loss reflects its “greater focus on higher quality subscribers and stricter credit policies.” Expectations aside, the numbers weren’t bad: Revenues from the U.S. operation were +7% to $5.6B with an operating profit of $1.2B, +19.7%. And DirecTV’s Latin America operations were surprisingly strong. They gained 645,000 subscribers, for a total of 9.1M. Revenues there at $1.5B were +20.3%, but unfavorable exchange rates especially with Brazil and Argentina resulted in a 7% drop in operating income to $224M. “DirecTV’s strong second quarter consolidated results reflect the unique benefits from our diversified portfolio of businesses which are driving industry leading top-line and bottom-line results,” CEO Mike White says. The company’s share price is down about 4% in pre-market trading.

“greater focus on higher quality subscribers”
DirectTV is so full of its own bullshit. This is a total lie. I am the model “quality subscriber’ who has never missed a payment since DirectTV/Sony first entered the marketplace over 15 years ago.
DirectTV has become so greedy and so customer unfriendly that I will probably switch to a bundled U-Verse package. Unless AT&T has misinformed me, I will receive my telephone, DSL and ALL the channels I currently have on DirectTV for about $25.00/month more than JUST DirectTV.
Now, that the office of the president was notified, DirectTV finally responded…with too little…and, far too late.
Losing subscribers is not a fluke nor a system DirectTV implemented in any way other than to cut out bill deadbeats while raising prices. I believe that the costs for home delivery entertainment have hit peaks with consumers. They will cut back, and more importantly, start playing one provider’s promo deals against the others.
Welcome DirectTV to the new playing field regarding your service and costs. The game is changing.
My bill is down$9 since they introduced Ent package, but I dont have HD so my bill is under 70..but Comcast charges me an extra 15 for internet as a penalty so it ends up pretty even.Dtv service is ok but you need to deal with Office of the Prez reps::the others r stupid & powerless
What’s the issue here?
make it affordable
DUH!
I live in Upstate NY and get Verizon Triple Play Essential Package: DirectTV, DSL, and my Phone (land line) with unlimited local, regional, and long distance with all features. I have HD with a DVR and the Extra Choice Package with DirectTV. The entire package, $95 per month including all taxes. My only problem with DirectTV is their billing system. They over charged me for 4 months and would not credit my account. Last week I told them to issue the credit or cancel my account. I am billed by Verizon for DirectTV so it gets crazy trying to correct billing errors. I have had Time Warner and DirectTV is far more reliable.
