Author E.L. James, who was inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga to write Fifty Shades Of Grey, has in turn given the equivalent of literary Viagra to the steamy fiction genre. There are a ton of knockoffs in the offing, and just the other day I saw in Costo James’ trio of books, and right next to it another book with a similar-looking cover, obviously from a publisher trying to ride her coattails. Until Universal and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti name a screenwriter, get a script, a director and a cast to film the first movie, it seemed James would have to be content watching her books fly off the shelves, all over the world. Well, maybe not. James has curated an album that’s being released by EMI Classics, a group of 15 classical music tunes she feels should be heard by the panting masses who devour her sexy S&M saga of 27-year old billionaire entrepreneur Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. The three books have sold 31 million copies worldwide, so that is a chance to move a lot of records with tunes that include Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and Tallis’ Spem in Alium. The latter, a 16th Century tune, shot to the top of the UK classical music charts just because of the mere mention in the books.

May have sold a lot of books off the back of the hype, but the general consensus seems to be that they’re badly written misogynist trash.
I don’t think it was written to win any awards for its literary value. I think it was solely meant to entertain, and that it did!
It only entertained the twi-hards who can barely read as it is. The true smut-lovers know there is *free* smut on the internet that isn’t written at a fifth-grade reading level (probably to match its fan base) and portrays bdsm accurately, instead of abusively, couched in mysognist tropes. Also, major LOL at her ‘refined’ choice of Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring. ha ha ha HA.
I agree, with what you said. There is also the fact that apparently Anastasia doesn’t even like recieveing the BDSM that Christian Grey does to her. In a sense its a form of abuse and tells people who are willingto believe, that thats how its supposed to be done.
I can’t even imagine how much the first movie will make.
i loved the books, it had a great story line…
i hope to see more from christian and ana.
Me too.
Don’t you mean Edward and Bella?
If you visit E L James’ website there are a list of the songs from the books. I have already downloaded them all from Ituns and put together my very own 50 shades soundtrack. There are some great songs on there a real fun mix of classical, pop, indie, and old school songs from the likes of Frank Sinatra etc. I personally think the music was a big part of what ade the book great.
As much as I loved all three books, I wish they wouldn’t make a movie. The movie never does the book justice and leaves nothing to the imagination, like putting a real face to Mr. Grey.
I agree. I can’t imagine that a movie would even begin to skim the surface of the emotions of this book. Too much would be cut out of the movie version. It would probably focus only on the sex and forget about the underlying reasons.
I honestly hope E L James continues the Christian and Ana saga with more books.
Me, too.
Loved the story hope there will be more
The only studio that should do this movie is Vivid
You all know Christian Grey is Robert Pattinson. The books are enjoyable trashy fun. I have no desire to see a movie version.
I really really hope Robert Pattinson won’t be portraying Christian, he is a rubbish actor outside of Twilight.
I also hope they don’t cast Kristin as Ana.
There are better actors/actresses out there than them two.
I read few chapters from the first book out of curiousity and I wish I had not. Unfortunately I cannot unread it. It was not even bad, it was more than horrible. The writing is exceptionally bad, really bad and the story, I mean, seriously? And I wonder how can they film it? Is it going to be a porn? That is what the book is about. And what group of people they want to make that movie for? Definitely not teenagers.
What the hell has happened here? Deadlines comments are looking like they should be on some tv rag mag website NOT here!
Deadline I love you but I don’t want the Tweens here with their one cent I love Edward comments
Libraries across the country will not carry this title, not because of the content but because of the writing, which quite frankly, says it all. We’re a long way from Henry Miller or James Joyce folks…
