Longtime House executive producers Russel Friend & Garrett Lerner are back at Fox with a new project. The network has handed out a script commitment with penalty to an untitled ensemble drama written and executive produced by Friend and Lerner. Set at a naval aircraft carrier, the project has an upstairs/downstairs dynamic: the “downstairs” is filled with 18-20-year-olds, their coming-of-age stories heightened by the life and death nature of their everyday jobs; the “upstairs” is anchored by a female fighter pilot and her season long quest to solve a murder that occurs on board.
The drama is produced by 20th Century Fox TV where Friend and Lerner signed an overall deal in April. WME-repped Lerner and Friend joined House at the beginning of season 2 as co-executive producers and were upped to executive producers at the end of Season 3. They stayed with the show until the end of its eight-season run in May.

Great idea, and great writers — and a perfect home for it. Considering it’s already got an obvious story engine, and knowing how great Lerner & Friend are at character, it should be a slam dunk.
I’m not a huge fan of poo-poo’ing shows based on loglines, but come on… “coming-of-age stories heightened by the life and death nature of their everyday jobs?” they’re on an aircraft carrier surrounded by a battle fleet hundreds of miles away from any frontline. the only life and death danger is of them doing their jobs wrong and mishandling munitions meant to be dropped on a few militants and oh yeah, mostly innocent brown people trying to survive amidst the chaos we’ve wrought. oh and meanwhile a fighter pilot (female! thank you for that twist) is perry mason solving a murder. holy ridiculousness. boy i hope bruckheimer’s producing.
A female fighter pilot. Naturally, because there are so many of those. Oh, and of course she’s solving a murder because that’s what female fighter pilots do in their off time aboard a ship, solve murders. People don’t realize how common murders are aboard ships, particularly air craft carriers. It’s practically like South Chicago on those babies.
Jesus, is there no one in Hollywood that actually served in the military? Just one guy?
If you wanted to do a real drama aboard an aircraft carrier, or any US surface ship, you do a drama about officers and Sr. NCOs trying to keep their ship of war at combat ready status while they deal with the throngs of female sailors that get knocked up during the cruise. THAT’s where all the real drama is.
Me thinks she won’t just be a female fighter pilot but a SMOKING HOT female fighter pilot.
During my service aboard several aircraft carriers we had lots of murders and they were all solved by SMOKING HOT female fighter pilots. This is how I know Fox is actually making a reality show.
A female fighter pilot? Sigh. It’s like a Fox thinks its 1995.
I’m sure she’ll be cast with an actress with a surgically enhanced chest, hair extensions and very long legs so she rocks her flight jumpsuit. What about the sexual tension with her and the guy next to her in the plane, or on the radio or in the teeny tiny bunk next to her.
well, they just HAD to add the crime procedural element. Because without that, how can you sustain a show? I mean, a real drama based on real things that happen on real ships? come on now.
… sigh.
Wasn’t this Taylor Elmore’s project from last development season?
This is all a liberal Hollywood plot to show the military in a positive light. Oh wait… I mean in a negative light. Oh wait… damn.
I’m sure my Drudge right-wing agenda fits in here somewhere I’ll figure it out… and then I’ll post seven more times accusing Hollywood of being communist and pretending to be seven people.
More white male writers getting deals.
Elia do us all a favor, stop all your moaning and put your material up in a blog or in some such place where it can be read or viewed or whatever it is you do that the white man isn’t allowing you to thrive doing. i don’t care if you’re a woman, i don’t care if you’re purple, i don’t care if you’re a figment of my imagination. if you have it on the page or can somehow create content to sell to a broad enough audience so advertisers can sell soap and cars or theater owners can put asses in seats, just put yourself out there. you don’t even have to be talented, just don’t suck too badly. i look forward to people bitching about your deals. and as the ultimate Deadline-Comment-Whiner, yours is going to be a great back-story. please let it unfold.
Time To Put Up – I assume you’re a white male?
talent is important but luck and connections are the main reason anybody gets a deal. Race is not the issue. I hate when people cry and whine and use it as an excuse.
This is a quasi-remake/ripoff of the pilot episode of “JAG” from 1995. There was a female pilot and a murder on an aircraft carrier. They are doing it slightly different but it’s very similar. Want proof? imdb.com has it:
JAG S1, Ep1
Sep. 23, 1995
Rabb and Pike are assigned to investigate the disappearance of a female naval aviator. Most reports suggest an accidental death, but there’s a message from an unknown source who says it wasn’t an accident. The investigation continues into the aviator’s death. Harm’s past as a naval aviator is a source of friction to some of those on board the ship.
Oh, man, I was so down with this until I got the part about the female fighter pilot trying to solve a murder. WTF, you guys had a great idea with the characters and the setting, and then you torpedo it with a totally contrived shitty plot/character element?!
Naturally.
ABC has a submarine drama, so Fox ups the ante with an aircraft carrier drama.
Deckhand on an aircraft carrier is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world so yeah I think it can be interesting.
