EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has set Wes Ball to direct The Maze Runner, an adaptation of the James Dashner dystopian novel. This comes after the studio acquired his short film Ruin.
Produced by Gotham Group, The Maze Runner is a post-apocalyptic setting. The protagonist, Thomas, who after having his memory wiped is deposited in a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze. He soon learns they are part of a mysterious test, and finds it is his destiny to join the ‘maze runners’ and lead them to freedom. Peter Kang and Daria Cercek are overseeing at the studio. Noah Oppenheim wrote the first draft of the script.
Ball burst on to the scene earlier this year when his short, Ruin, became an internet sensation, amassing close to five million hits. Ball used the short to tell a sliver of the story he had been developing with fellow Florida State Film School alum, screenwriter T.S. Nowlin. The pair then sold the project preemptively to Fox last month. Ball is also aboard to direct that. Before that deal, Ball, who runs the animation/effects company Oddball Animation, sold The Treehouse to Warner Brothers. He is repped by APA, Gotham Group and attorney Rick Genow. Here is that short film Ruin:

Ruin was great, but who are we kidding. This is going to be another watered-down, under budgeted 20th disaster.
That is one PHENOMENAL, exciting 8 minute segment. Very impressive.
Why bother even going to film school, these days your better off studying visual effects.
Yeah right. Yet one more short film showing off amazing talents with CG. Great. Now try writing a story and interacting with actors… minus the explosion and spaceship trickery. It was neat to look at for a sec, but nothing different than all these CG video game shorts out there.
Wes did go to film school and learned traditional filmmaking techniques. His ability to “light” a scene in RUIN is evidence of his strong education.
That’s a lot of spatial contrivances for one eight-minute action sequence. Can’t wait to see how badly they mangle character, plot, and theme.
Make a videogame cut scene => Hollywood hires you to make movies
And studios wonder why their movies are so bad.
What the fuck man? You know nothing about his skills and go on and trash him? Stop.
oh, you bitter, jealous people. This kid has more creative talent in his pinky than 90% of the budding filmmakers out there. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt that he can do well with a plot, actors, etc.
Bravo, Wes Ball
Congratz to Wes!!! Great guy and a talented director.
The short looks like a video game cut piece. it has some ok moments, but we’re still doing the car/motorbike vs helicopter/spaceship thing? Hasn’t that literally jumped the shark? You’re stealing from Len Wiseman??
Some good moments, but that would be a long haul as a film.
And yes, unless small drama is your thing, skip film school.
what is impressive about this guy,
this guy is the top graphic artist for star trek and many other tv shows, look up his credits, he has access to the best in talent and facilities for nada,
I would have been more impressed if he was a poor kid from the slums of rio brazil and created “ruin” on his computer
again this just goes to show you that it is near impossible to get discovered now if you are a nobody, and to get to the point of being a somebody you have to pay your dues for at least 10 years working crap jobs in the ent industry and KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT !!!!!!!!!
So your take-away should be that it’s near impossible to get discovered if you’re a nobody, unless you put in all the crazy effort it requires to become a “top graphic artist” and produce an animated short that gets five million hits online.
Oy,
his credits far exceed a top graphic artist
his skillset ranges from visual to graphics over a 10 year period working for the studios, he had access to the best out there in talent and equipment,
that alone puts him way ahead of the curve, youtube directors cannot win against that,
he is not better than cameron, not by a long shot,
Because somebody said he was better than Cameron, right? Stop being a bitter child and actually be decent enough to congratulate another human being on their opportunities. If not, then keep quiet, as nobody gives a shit about your petty complaints.
Wes Ball is already a better director than James Cameron was when he made the first Terminator. Cameron did a short film titled Xenogenesis you can find it on YouTube or other sites and Ball has more going for him than Cameron did back then.
WOW! Nice short.. Wes you and your crew are great
Eight sixes, Wes. Congrats. Can’t wait to see what you do with the Grievers.
Wes, congratulations again!
