EXCLUSIVE: Fox has bought The Beach, a drama based on the 1996 novel by Alex Garland and the 2000 movie directed by Danny Boyle and starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The project is being written by Andrew Miller, who penned the original script for the CW’s The Secret Circle and co-ran the series with Kevin Williamson. “It’s about a group of young people feeling disconnected and disenchanted from society who try to start over in paradise but discover that while creating the perfect world is hard, protecting it is even harder”, Miller said.

Fox’s sister studio 20th Century Fox TV, also sibling of movie studio Twentieth Century Fox that produced the movie, is producing the TV series project. In an extra connection, Peter Rice, until recently Fox Entertainment chairman who continues to oversee the broadcast network in his new bigger News Corp. TV role, was the 20th film executive overseeing the 2000 movie. WME-repped Miller’s involvement stems from a script deal he had at 20th TV. When approached with the idea, he jumped on board being fan of both the book and the movie, in which a Western backpacker teams with locals in search for a mysterious island.

Please, please be better than that awful film.

the film is awesome.
Movie was terrible, yes, but I like this idea for a series. Like LOST but, well, they’re not lost and there’s no polar bears…
No, just machete wielding drug dealers and fields and fields of poppy.
Look, put it on Cinemax, give the babes bikinis and I’m in.
Make it serious and I’m out. Well, unless you put in Yahoo Serious, then I’m in again.
Danny Boyle’s only real ‘miss’ in my opinion.
Only real miss? Guess you haven’t seen A Life Less Ordinary. As spotty as The Beach was, it was still better than that bizarre low point in Boyle’s career.
And personally, I also felt that both Slumdog Millionaire and Sunshine were misses– but I know I’m largely alone with those two.
Umm – this would be titled “LOST” … right ?
The guy who wrote Secret Circle? ::Winces:: No thanks! That show was garbage and not even the guilty pleasure kind like most of The CW’s offerings.
Lol, disagree with you completely! The Secret Circle only got better the farther it went alone, ESPECIALLY in the back half of the season. And reading his original script for the Pilot of TSC compared to the Pilot Kevin Williamson did, I actually really liked his original Pilot Script for TSC better. Andrew Miller is such a great guy and I’m excited he’s starting a new project!
LOL – What are you talking about? THE SECRET CIRCLE was awesome and entertaining! Wait, no, that was the dental surgery I had last week. THE SECRET CIRCLE was painful and boring, now I remember.
I actually really enjoyed the film, but always thought it could be fantastic for a TV Series… I’m hoping this one makes it to air.
Andrew is a fantastic guy and a great writer. Congratulations man!
So, a guy who wrote a terrible TV show is returning to television to adapt a story that was already a terrible movie? Can he just go suck somewhere else? Away from all things media?
Kind of like this idea. “The Beach” is such a great book with amazing ideas…oh, wait. This is for Fox?! Oh, well.
I really liked Secret Circle, so I will give this a chance, but The Beach was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
He’s a great writer, wonderful guy, and has a lovely wife and child. Congrats!
I will probably check this out if it gets picked up. The Secret Circle wasn’t very good and never lived up to the potential it had. But, after reading Miller’s orginal script and his original plans for the show, it does seem that the show was more hampered by the changes the CW forced upon it than by Miller himself.
Having said that i’m not sure The Beach would translate as a tv show, it most certainly didn’t translate to film.
I loved The Secret Circle!
Interesting. It’d probably be better with a different writer. I hope there is a different showrunner IF it goes to series…
Andrew is a great writer and a great guy, everyone who develops and works with him loves him. People who troll this site posting odd bitter rants need to get a life.
I hope it gets picked up. I was a huge fan of the book, I thought the movie was good, and Boyle did a great job by the way, but they screenplay left out important characters and elements. Hope the TV show doesn’t blow it..
