EXCLUSIVE: Homeland executive producer Howard Gordon and writer Josh Friedman have teamed for a high-concept drama project, which has landed a rich premium script deal at NBC. The untitled project, from 20th Century Fox TV and Gordon’s studio-based Teakwood Lane, is described as a thriller soap set in a world much like ours, where human-looking robots are commonplace. After a routine homicide explodes into the first robot-on-human murder, the lead detective must solve the case and investigate a growing robot rebellion while dealing with the impact on his own fractured family. This marks the first project to come out of Teakwood Lane, which Gordon launched last month.
Friedman will write the script with Gordon supervising. The two will executive produce with Teakwood Lane’s head of TV Hugh Fitzpatrick. This marks a familiar territory for Friedman who helmed another series of projects about a world where humans and robots co-exist, Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. His pilot scripts the last two years both went to pilot at Fox, Locke & Key and The Asset. UTA-repped Friedman also co-wrote the 2005 alien invasion movie War Of The Worlds. This marks Friedman’s first project at NBC and Gordon’s return to the network where he executive produced Awake last season.
A 25-year veteran Gordon, repped by WME and attorney Michael Gendler, first gained attention for his work on the hit Fox/20th TV series The X-Files and was the showrunner and executive producer of 24 for which he received both the Golden Globe and the Emmy for Best Drama Series. His other credits include Angel, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Beauty And The Beast, Sisters and Spenser: For Hire.

Hmm, sounds a lot like IRobot…
Agreed, but Gordon & Friedman is a dream pairing and I’m willing to give anything they do a chance.
ha! iRobot meets BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE…..
Sure hope Asimov is getting some royalties.
This sounds pretty cool. Howard Gordon has been knocking it out of the park with HOMELAND. Very excited to see some smart scifi on tv again.
Great way to start the morning!
This will be a great show. Can’t wait to watch iy.

Sounds good, but it seems like a rework of the NBC pilot ‘Beautiful People’ from last pilot season.
This description makes it sound exactly like “Beautiful People.” Exactly. And that was a really good script. This is caca.
”I, Robot” much?
Thirding the, “Hey, isn’t this Asimov’s ‘Caves of Steel?’ but I’m sure they have some ready-made reason for the Asimov estate’s lawyers for why it’s nothing like the Robot series.
Will Will Smith headline again?
Hmmm irobot, bsg, Caprica, terminator… Blah, Bah, Bah. There are no original ideas anymore so its really all about the execution.
Look at Boardwalk Empire, there isn’t an original idea in the entire series that we haven’t seen a dozen times over, BUT what they do pull off is a flawless execution of those tropes at tge highest possible level.
Maybe this is a rehashed idea, but these guys might just deliver a great version if this idea.
And seriously Howard, change your headshot already because you couldnt look like more of a cliched douchebag if you spent six months casting for the role of d-bag writer/producer. But keep that shirt unbuttoned because I am hot and bothered.
I agree about some of the films/TV series you mention, but I have to say I actually think CAPRICA was pretty unique. Yes, it used a common trope — the rise of the A.I. against the decay of humanity — but (IMHO) it distinguished itself as a compelling and thought provoking drama.
Reminds me of the premise of the graphic novel (and Bruce Willis starrer) The Surrugates more than I Robot. Either way I’m looking forward to it and am not gonna pretend every concept has to be original (yeah…talking to you, Haters). It just needs to be well executed.
Yes, it does sound like I, Robot, but that’s a good thing. I hope it gets a series pickup. I enjoyed TSCC so am very happy for Josh Friedman.
I hope Howard Gordon can keep his excellent Homeland in mind when the writing is done and they start filming. I don’t want to see cartoons, amateur computer graphics, Buffy vampires etc. I have to admit that the dragons in ‘Game Of Thrones’ were very good though.
TSCC was excellently made using real smashing and wacking and car smashes.
Put Will Smith in it and I will DEFINITELY NOT watch it.
Good luck to Josh Friedman.
Who have you guys got in mind for a naked cyborg this time?
Isaac Asimov’s estate should file a lawsuit for copyright infringement. This is a TV series based on “I, Robot” and they should be honest enough to admit this. I hope they get sued so they are forced to pay Asimov’s heirs a lot of money for this.
Every time NBC orders a show with a science fiction premise, they run it for 13 episodes and cancel it. Journeyman, Awake… why does NBC bother?
I wrote a treatment for “Caves of Steel” some years ago – do I get royalties too?
Now this is exactly where I want to see Summer Glau.
She already worked with Josh Friedman in Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles
