Robin Roberts announced this morning on Good Morning America that Friday, August 31 will be her last day on air before she starts an extended medical leave to undergo a bone marrow transplant for a disease previously known as preleukemia. The move was expected since Roberts announced in June that she had been diagnosed with MDS or myelodysplastic syndrome. The GMA co-host left mid-show in late July, saying she was taking time off because she was “not feeling too well”. She returned on August 20, saying she felt rested and well. ABC says this week’s program will celebrate Robin and provide extensive reporting on her treatment, procedure and recovery process. Roberts’ doctor will also be interviewed. Beginning on Thursday, ABC says Robin’s team and her doctors will post information on her recovery in the months ahead and viewers will be able to leave personal messages for her. In July, GMA overtook Today in ratings for the first time in 17 years, coming in at number 1 in total viewers and Adults 25-54. Season to date, GMA has cut its gaps with Today in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 compared with a year ago.
