EXCLUSIVE: After two so-so attempts to adapt James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux terrific mystery novel series into features, the New Orleans-based crime saga is being redrawn for cable TV. Fox-based producer Hutch Parker has optioned Burke’s books and is packaging the series. After how well FX and Graham Yost did with Elmore Leonard’s U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens character in the series Justified, cable sounds like just the place for Robicheaux. There is certainly a wealth of material that can be used to paint the picture of the Vietnam vet-turned police detective who works out of New Orleans and whose temper–and imposing size–often leads him to meet criminals on their own vicious terms. Burke started the series with 1987′s Neon Rain, and Simon & Schuster just released his latest, Creole Belle, the 19th book in the series. Burke’s colorful writing brings to life the French Quarter like no mystery writer I’ve read, as he and his hot-blooded, tortured hulking private eye pal Clete Purcell take on the pimps, drug dealers, Klansmen and fat cats preying on the underclass. Burke has also worked his personal outrage with the conditions that caused the disaster of Hurricane Katrina into his prose, and he has won two Edgar Awards for his work and been named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. The two attempts at features were the 1996 Heaven’s Prisoners with Phil Joanou directing and Alec Baldwin starring, and the 2009 Bertrand Tavernier-directed adaptation of In The Electric Mist With Confederate Dead, which starred Tommy Lee Jones.
It’s the second recent deal Parker has made with a major mystery author; he just aligned with Shane Salerno to turn Savages author Don Winslow early novel California Fire And Life into a film. Parker is just getting underway on the James Mangold-directed Hugh Jackman-starrer The Wolverine, which he’s producing along with Jackman, Lauren Shuler Donner and John Palermo.

I’m sorry, I’m confused. Hutch is a nice enough guy but, unless I am misreading, this hasn’t even sold yet. It’s not even a piece of development, which might not even be a pilot which might not even be an on-air series. Why is this worthy of a 250+ word story? There are hundreds of books optioned each year that don’t even sell.
@frenchcandyman: because he’s got a good publicist? Presumably the idea, here, is to generate ‘heat’ and shortcut the process to sell it. Also Burke’s a name in mystery books, so worthy of some attention.
But agreed –a little premature as a ‘big’ story
Great news. A truly interesting character. Would be a great role for Will Patton who does all the audio books. Wonder who could play Clete?
THis has to happen. WOuld make for great TV.
Miscasting has been the problem. For starters John Goodman should be a lock for Clete– I thought so the moment I first encountered the charecter.
As for Dave, Alec Baldwin was bizarre and Tommy Lee Jones, though looking more likely, was lethargic. Scott Glenn’s probably too long in the tooth, but it must be someone with a weatherbeatedn exterior.
I agree that John Goodman would be a perfect choice… Burke even thinks so, as he put it in Creole Belle… “met John Goodman and he looks just like Mr. Clete”… Burke wants Goodman.
But for Dave, it has to be Will Patton. He has done most of the audio books to absolute perfection. He is a fantastic actor… and again, I believe Burke would love him to play the role.
And, while I am a huge Justified fan, this needs to be on hbo, showtime, or some other pay station where the language and violence can be on par with the books… unless fx or amc would actually allow it… not sure.
I am biased, I am a rabid fan of Dave Robicheaux and my favorite author James Lee Burke. Couple of my favorite actors Alex Baldwin and Tommy Lee Jones didn’t do anything for the role. John Goodman as Clete sounds good. Please please make a great series of this charactor.
Totally agree with John Goodman as Clete. Also that Alex Baldwin, awesome as he is in 30 rock , is not Dave.. His character was a bit heavy handed. Dave is; tha spiritual guy with some sense of ?”humor” about some of life’s absurdities, and inherent unfairness. A finely nuanced and admirable man the actors who could bring him to life ?? Matt Damon? The only one who comes quickly to mind. Just finished Glass Rainbow have read most so adding my 2 cents. Thanks for the chance to weigh in.
While Will Patton does an amazing job as voice acting Dave, and is a fine actor himself, he is not Dave. Dave is tall, large framed, with a head full of thick hair. Will is none of this. And Will has no Cajun features. I do hope, though, they find a place for him within the series, if it happens.
Everyone is all about Goodman playing Clete. I like Goodman as an actor, and had he not already played Babyfeet, he could slide right in as Purcell. But, he’s played a Robicheaux villain, and I’m not sure it would work for him to play Clete.
I’ve said for a long time, and will continue to do so, that Vincent D’onofrio would be fantastic as clete. He’s built right, has the curly hair…impish demeanor. And a talented actor.
Bruce Willis as Dave, Nick Nolte as Clete!!
How about Dennis Quaid as Dave, he has the cajun accent down, and Nick Nolte as Clete.
I’m for Dennis Quaid as Dave and John Goodman as Clete. I know he played a bad guy in a movie…but no one I’ve talked to has even heard of either movie.
I have read all the Dave Robicheaux novels and always pictured Dennis Quaid in the role. I know Dave is aging but women still come on to him. Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor but he was a lousy choice for Dave. I have always pictured John Goodman as Clete. He has lost weight but he is still a big guy and the movies can do wonders with make up and costumes.
I picture Josh Brolin as Dave. I love John Goodman but he might be TOO big to play Clete IMO. A few years back, Gary Busey may have made a good Clete but he’s too old now. Jon’s idea of Vincent D’onofrio is interesting. He’s a good and versatile actor.
I enjoyed both Robicheaux films but there was certainly room for improvement. Lets hope this series gets done and done right!
I don’t agree about dismissing Alec Baldwin as Dave. he’s older now and is much more Dave than the other
Actors mentioned, I think Will Patton would be perfect as Clete. Really hope these movies come about.
Mr. Burke is an incredible writer. he brings out every aspect of Lousiana.
I think Michael Weatherly from NCIS would be a perfect Dave Robicheaux. I’ve thought since the first time I saw him act. As for Clete, I think John Goodman may be a bit of a cliche. What about Larry Joe Campbell, the guy who played Jim Belushi’s brother-in-law in “According to Jim”? Anybody else think so?
By the way, Jon, what do you mean by “Cajun features”? Being a Cajun myself, I’m curious to read your answer. Not offended, mind you, just curious.
I thought Tommy Lee Jones would make a great Dave, but , after watching him NAH. Love Tommy but I think you may be on to something with Matt Damon. Clete can only be played by John Goodman. I have read everything Mr. Burke has written and like a schoolgirl waiting on her first date I cannot wait for his next book. It amazes me how someone can write every book that i cannot put down. When i get his latest book i lose sleep until i finish it. Mr Burke may you live to be a very very long time and keep writing. Been a fan for a Loooong time and thanks for the enjoyment you have given mw.
Dennis Quaid does not have the cajun accent down. It was one of the worst cajun accents I’ve ever heard. He might make a good Dave Robicheaux, but the accent needs a lot of work. BTW, I am a cajun and live in the heart of cajun country. I can trace my ancestery back to Nova Scotia.
