Say it ain’t so Frodo! IFC Midnight acquired North American rights to the Franck Khalfoun-directed thriller Maniac, with Elijah Wood playing the title role in the remake of the William Lustic 1980 slasher pic. Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur wrote the script for a film that made its debut out of competition at Cannes.
Frank (Wood) is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed his long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

Are we supposed to take this seriously or is it camp?
I saw this in Cannes. It is played absolutely straight, no laughs intended or otherwise. While the original is a cult classic, this is as nasty a piece of exploitation cinema as I can remember seeing. The very competent and artistic direction and camerawork make it even more so. I realize some will take this as recommending the film but it’s not. There is no drama, no twist, no character development, no arc. It is a pointless and gratuitous slasher and I would love to know Elijah Woods motives for making it.
Quite looking forward to this one, heard it’s more in the vein of Henry – Portrait of a Serial Killer
Saw this at MIFF a couple of weeks ago. It’s got a unique visual style (almost entirely shot from Wood’s POV), and a moody electronic score. But the gimmick fails to sustain 90 minutes, and gets pretty silly after a while. There are some neat homages to the original Lustig film, though.
