James Cameron is the latest to jump on the China bandwagon announcing a joint-venture to offer 3D camera technology to Chinese filmmakers. The news comes as Cameron is in China attending a 3D film forum at Tianjin Polytechnic University. His 3D tech and production services company, Cameron Pace Group, has set up CPG China Division in what Cameron called a “huge” deal, according to Reuters. CPG is partnered with state-backed firms Tianjin North Film Group and Tianjin Hi-tech Holding Group. The venture will not immediately be involved in producing films, Cameron noted. “We’re not going to tell Chinese filmmakers how to make movies. We are going to help them make a transition to 3D production technology as cost effectively as possible, and in a way that doesn’t inhibit creativity,” he told the news agency. In 2011, Chinese box office revenue was up to $2.1B. Much of that came from 3D titles. Cameron’s own Titanic 3D was a monster hit in China breaking records earlier this year. His news follows DreamWorks Animation’s Monday unveiling of details on its Shanghai theme park and a plan to co-produce Kung Fu Panda 3 in China.
