EXCLUSIVE: Jim Rome is becoming CBS Sports man all the way. Deadline has learned that the popular sports broadcaster is finalizing a deal with CBS Radio, which is expected to use his show as the cornerstone for CBS Sports Radio, the new national sports radio network slated to launch on Jan. 2. Rome’s daily morning Jim Rome Show had been syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks since 1996.
The new agreement follows Rome’s deal with CBS in January when he left ESPN and his show there, Jim Rome Is Burning, for Rome, a new half-hour daily cable TV show on CBS Sports Network, which premiered in April, and a new sports and entertainment series on Showtime, which will debut later this year. Rome also is set to contribute to CBS Sports’ coverage of the NFL, NCAA basketball and U.S. Open Tennis Championships, and other events. The pact with CBS Radio brings Rome’s radio and TV endeavors under the same roof and makes him one of CBS’ top sports personalities across all media.

He’s great on TV but his radio show has a bunch of tools calling in to do their best impersonation of him. It’s awful. His radio show appeals to the lowest common denominator.
I disagree – the radio show is his audience….so they interact with him more. No interaction between content and audience on TV…yet!
I could not agree more. The man runs his radio show off a script and its bad radio for the most part. He is good on TV.
Bad radio at its best. Excuse the oxymoron but not the moron(Rome). He is the ultimate king of using an audio drop or joke that was mildly funny the first time but by the 100th time it’s just an outright assault on every listener. Thank God for Dan Patrick. Not only is he more relevant but he is much funnier than Rome could ever be. Unfortunately, for years he was on the radio before Rome and tools in San Antonio TX would cut one of Dan’s hours so their local spares could try to entertain the masses. I would have appreciated them taking one or three of Rome’s hours instead. There were a few days during the year when I actually looked forward to listening to his show. Yep, you guessed it, when he had a guest host, preferably the Sklar brothers. Those dudes are awesome. Fortunately, Rome ended his relationship with the Premier Radio Networks and moved to CBS. Locally, that means Rome is replaced with Jay Mohr, definitely an upgrade.
I agree 100%. It’s so imature.
Hope CBS Radio likes long seconds of dead air between sentences.
To be fair, ABC Radio had no problem with Paul Harvey, the original ‘king’ of the long pauses…
Rome was better X years ago when Travis Rodgers was producer and The Clones were still a part of the Show. Dan Patrick is way more interesting
Rome is unlistenable these days. He’s cluttered his show with so many audio drops it’s annoying and juvenile. His tv show has generated no numbers. It’s incredible that CBS is banking on Rome and Doug Gottlieb to lead the charge. Not in my lifetime.
Rome is a badass! This is awesome, and congrats to Feldman.
Nothing is better than Rome and Steve Elkington!
Rome set a new trend which anticipated the new culture of rude. Very funny early on. Now he is being assimilated into the mainstream.
this guy is making so much money for just covering sports its simply unbelievable. We live in an extremely odd culture where gossip is valued far beyond almost anything else.
but Rome is a rising balloon that will fly too high too quickly. Nowhere to go now but down. He has expanded out in so many directions, it shows a great and very, very aggressive business sense.
Say what you want, but regardless of what’s happened to Rome’s show, CBS Sports Network needed a big, recognizable name to help get attention for the network, and by picking up Rome, they have done that. They still need more though.
Spot on comment. Similar to Sirius signing Howard Stern. A fledgling network requires an anchor star.
Yes the radio show is his majority audience. More people can tune-in to a radio station than sit down in front of the tv in the middle of a work day.
Dear CBS, please sign Tony Bruno. The guy only launched all the sports radio networks the past 20 years
Love Rome! Dan Patrick is a BORE.
I’ve listened to him 15 years and have seen him become more corporate and hypocritical over the years. Anybody else remember “NeckCar”? “Crapchester”? How about “Crackmore”? That was when he was funny. Now, its time to rake in the $$$ and show ESPN what’s what and not much more.
I live in la tell me where I can tune in rome now on the local raido? Other than that for my time and since thr old days of the mighty 690 there aint no one better than the pimp in the box hands down
Dan Patrick has by far surpassed Jim Rome as the best radio show.
#thomas as rome always says, ‘i would not like my show either if i only gave it a month…’. Give it time and learn the terminology and personal behaviors of the show and u would have to love it. He has a time tested method that caters to his style. Numerous shows have tried his method and have failed. I love that no matter what sports show you are listening to there is always a listener who calls in and gives their version of a rome take. What other shows format has had that sort of influence. Oh, lets not forget his guests. I know other shows have great guests, but his guests have been loyal for years and truley seem more genuine in his interviews than other sport shows hosts. I wish we could have him and jay mohr. I seriously miss the rome show!
If Rome were not allowed to repeat himself, his show would be half as long. Have not listened to him for some time. Thank goodness for SVP on the other network.
Yeah, on his radio show, he’s pretty much become a caricature of himself. But as bad as his radio show has become, it’ still better than the stiff, robotic, que card reading (“Allegedly”, –I’m pretty tired of that too) guy I used to see on RIB on ESPN. To be fair, I haven’t seen him on CBS or Showtime, but in general, his style doesn’t seem to translate to t.v.
Do we forget the smack off where the Brick got his start. Every dog has it’s day
Omg!! I have no idea why Jim Rome was on the radio as long as he was….he was awful!! He used that fake forced voice that he still uses…it’s just amazing that he’s made money doing what he does…one thing he did do well was ask good questions in an interview…thats it!!! that is it!!! (Talledaga nights…rickie Bobbie…Jesus was a man for Christ sake!!!lol shut up Chet!!!) otherwise…Rome was completely awful…thank god he’s gone and there’s no way he’s gonna last on tv…I don’t know anyone who will follow him…..jay mohr is amazing!!! God is amazing!!! (Ray Lewis) lol
I COMPLETELY disagree. I’ve been listening to his radio show since ’94. Nothing but great things on his show. In fact, I would go so far as to say his radio show is much better than his TV broadcast.
