EXCLUSIVE: “You can’t do a late night show until you’re 80 years old,” Jimmy Kimmel just joked to me about his Jimmy Kimmel Live moving from midnight to 11:35 PM weekdays starting January 8th. The ABC late night host is only 44 years old now – and that’s why the network is betting that Kimmel can attract younger eyeballs than Jay Leno, 62, and David Letterman, 65. ABC’s own venerable Nightline skews to older demographics as well. “ABC sees the future and thinks it makes sense to entrench ourselves at 11:35 PM now,” Kimmel explained. Anything about the show he might have to change by starting a 1/2 hour earlier? “Maybe cut back on the penis jokes.”

The move comes after a decade of slow build in awareness and ratings and on the heels of landing its first best series Emmy nomination. Kimmel told me that Disney/ABC bosses Bob Iger, Anne Sweeney, and Paul Lee made the decision to move him to 11:35 PM without his involvement. “Truth is it was such a secret operation. There was a lot of discussion without me. First, the decision was made on their part and then they went to the affiliates who embraced the idea enthusiastically. So did sales. Then they called my agent.”
When Kimmel heard the news, “I was shaking, not necessarily the shaker,” he said. But he understands that this move does shake up network’s late night. “We were able to entrench ourselves at midnight. Honestly, luck was involved. We flat out got lucky. Ultimately, when you look back at this stuff, we did get a chance to develop under the radar. Nobody had any idea what ratings we should or shouldn’t get because that midnight time slot didn’t exist. Just the act of being on the air every night was the best thing for us,” Kimmel analyzes. “It’s a rare situation where patience pays off – and also the fact that no one was paying attention.”
So what might be a good ratings number come the fall when, for the first time, 3 late night network hosts go head-to-head-to-head? “Ultimately, a good number for ABC is if they’re making money. There are other factors besides ratings, like integrations, to make money. But we don’t know how three shows on at 11:35 will score except I do know our ratings will go up from midnight.” Kimmel admits he’s “a little scared” right now at the prospect of competing with veterans The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and The Late Show With David Letterman. “Not so much for me but because a lot of people are working for me. It’s a lot of responsibility. The truth is we could have continued indefinitely at midnight. If this experiment doesn’t work out, it will be a burden here. But maybe we’ll get a pleasant surprise.”

Ted Koppel’s worst nightmare a reality
Well, there is a grain of truth to that.
On his final “Nightline”, Ted Koppel urged viewers to watch the “new” “Nightline”, warning that “if you don’t, it might get replaced by a comedy show”.
One of the nicest guys in town. And quite talented. Time for Jay and Dave to step aside.
No way does Jay step aside. Ever. But if lightening were to strike and it happened, it would be even more interesting with Jimmy (Fallon) vs. Jimmy. Dave is already sleeping through his show. If he finally goes back to Indiana, Craig would get the nod and be destroyed by both Jimmys. In the tradition of Conan at 11:35, he’s just too weird.
Good for Kimmel and smart of ABC.
It might take a bit to sink in but if ABC does a good job with promoting/advertising the move ahead of time that 20 year difference in host age could pay off.
Kimmel, I think, needs to maybe take a half-step back from so many jokes a half-hour earlier (that’s in NO way intended as an insult) but I think he’s going to do fine.
It’s going to be fun to see how this all plays out.
And when I say “Jokes” I mean during interviews.
Leno layoffs, Kimmel promotions.
Huge miscalculation. How much of Kimmel’s rating is a tailwind from Nightline? You can bet it’s a lot. Guess we’ll find out what happens when a 12:35 show out-rates an 11:35 show.
Learn from Conan’s mistake. Don’t do it.
Allow me to calculate….
None.
I personally enjoy his show more than Jay and Dave, but then I can’t stand Jay and haven’t really been a fan of Dave in ages.
Good move on ABC’s behalf.
“Hey, honey, it’s 11:35, what show ya wanna watch?”
“I dunno. Which one has the youngest host?”
Ted Koppel warned us this would happen – but I don’t think he was expecting that Nightline would be “replaced with a comedy show” even when it was doing well in the ratings. Is it really better financially to sell tacos to teenagers than to sell Buicks to 50-somethings?
Eh. This almost happened in 2002 or so, when Dave Letterman opted not to jump ship to ABC.
Jimmy has earned this. If ABC is reading any of these though it has to understand that in neeeds PATIENCE to see if this works!
Don’t pull an NBC and jump ship at the first sign of trouple in 6 months. Jimmy has a great show, give him the freedom to build on his recent successes!
They’ll be patient. If Jimmy attracts seven viewers under the age of 75, he’ll be running ahead of Nightline’s demo.
Wasn’t he already competing with the second half of those shows?
Without a doubt, Jimmy is one of the nicest, most down to earth guys in the business. Witness his only reservation about the time change has to do with the well being of his staff. Jimmy is funny as hell, and smart as a whip, and a decent human being. Those of us who work in this business know how very rare that combination is. I wish him nothing but success in this move, and applaud the executives who see enough promise in JK and his team, that this seemed like the right thing to do.
Nice, huh? I still remember the way that Kimmel ambushed Jay after the Conan dust up. Kimmel appeared on Jay’s show on a video board and made Jay look dumb by giving smart ass answers to questions. I felt sorry for Jay. Folks, that’s called bullying.
Said the pot to the kettle.
I’m sorry, who gave Conan his show and then took it back? It didn’t take Jimmy to make Jay look dumb – it was Jay’s own greed/hubris.
Gut says the Kimmel ambush of Leno was carefully orchestrated and scripted by both parties who were laughing up their sleeves.
Good grief! How many more time periods are the “big three” going to have the exact same shows running simultaneously?
It’s a smart move on ABC’s end as entertainment sells and makes more money than a news broadcast would do on any given day. Kimmel is gaining momentum and it’s like a two-year experiment with ABC to see what potential might be presented here as by 2014, we could see a change at CBS’s late night show and Kimmel getting stronger and his being young helps too. A few changes and tweaks to his program here and there and he could outlast Leno too.
He’s going to flop worst than Conan and ABC will end up moving Nightline back. Young people are watching Comedy Central at that time and won’t be tuning in.
With Disney it’s about profitability, example daytime no soaps reality instead. Money drives Disney as it should, and it things don’t work out they own both shows just switch them back. No big pay outs to pay like Conan.
Congrats to Jimmy. But, very sad news for the “Nighline” team for all their hard work, even though ABC says the network will give them a Friday night slot in addition to staying on the air. Great ratings for the “Nightline” show for several years — but it still means demoted.
Kimmel is good and deserves this opportunity – Jay sucks and even though I like him, Conan sometimes does also – the only one I can count on for a late night laugh is Dave and my loyalty is unwavering.
Kimmel will do well and we can look forward to both Dave and Jay finally being forced to retire sooner than they expected to. Fallon will replace Leno. The irony is that Conan will soon be fired from TBS and if Conan is smart he’ll be able to replace Letterman. Craig Ferguson is a non-starter he’s way too eccentric and bizarre for 11:35. Conan should have passed on the TBS show he could have enjoyed his NBC money and done other things waiting for Dave to retire. By 2014 it could be Kimmel vs. Conan vs. Fllon all at 11:35. That’s worth hoping for.
It’s a good move. In a world where TMZ is fact checking ABC’s news division (ahem) maybe its about time. ABC needs to increase the budget on that series if they are moving it up. The interior set looks cheapola and has for years. They have actually a very impressive theater entry they don’t use on screen enough. They’re a bit tied when adding audience and have found creative ways to get around that with the musical guests in the parking lots, etc. Can’t recall what’s next door – if successful at 11:30 – expand a bit? I do hope they never move him from that location which I thought was genius and great for the tourists in town. A show actually being broadcast from H Blvd. – circa present day.
The 11:30 P.M. (ET/PT) slot will get even more crowded with talk shows: Most stations carrying the new Arsenio Hall show in 2013 will show it at that hour.
And I can see TBS pushing “Conan” back a half-hour so he too goes on the air at 11:30.
By September of 2013, there could be five comedy-oriented talk/variety shows (Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Arsenio Hall, and Conan O’Brien) all starting at the same time (not to mention the somewhat similar “Colbert Report” also at that hour!).
ABC’s decision to move Kimmel up and push “Nightline” back may be the biggest programming blunder the network has made since they decided to pick-up “Turn-On” back in 1969!
