Granted, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman has told investors that he sees a big opportunity for his company to grow by promoting sales of consumer products tied to its entertainment brands. Here’s how Comedy Central plans to chip in. But viewers may be less-than-thrilled by today’s announcement that Comedy Central has inked an exclusive retail partnership with Urban Outfitters to launch products from The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, and Indecision 2012 in stores nationwide starting August 15. Does anybody really care that this is Urban Outfitters’ first exclusive product collaboration with a TV network? Nah, not when political satire mutates with retail therapy and all those graphic tees, mugs, tumblers, posters and buttons hit the aisles and the Internet with “smart, funny and election-inspired merchandise”. Look at your watch: this may be the exact moment when Stewart and Colbert sold out.

Additionally aren’t their shows a satire about people selling out? In the same wheel house it seems to me plus, when push comes to shove, I doubt either one of them have very much say about this stuff so they have a sense of humor about it. I had a “Face the Nation” coffee mug from the old CBS store at the Ed Sullivan Theater. Is that selling out? You used to see politicians and heads of state drinking out of them.
That is so true, but you will not see David Letterman or Jay Leno get their own brand of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream or have David Letterman read the Top Ten List sponsored by Pepsi and Dave takes a sip every time he reads a list. Seriously, comics have been selling out before selling out became an issue in Season 9 of the Simpsons. Heck, selling out was an issue before The Simpsons started. It can be traced back to as early as the first “Star Wars” toys, but Krusty the Klown took it to the max because he put his name on everything. Of course he was a compulsive gambler who once bet on the Washington Generals.
The only reason TV programming exists is to sell sh*t to the public. With DVRs as prevalent as they are, we will see a lot more of this kind of thing on all TV shows. It will really suck when they doing it in films…. “Batman, I’m so thirsty! Throw me a Fierce Lime Gatorade, at once!”
Fierce Lime is the bomb!
Who in this business has not sold out? “Not selling out” used to mean something, but just about everyone who works for a corporation has crossed that line. Sure, there’s selling out a little bit versus being a complete sell out, but the people reading this website because they’re in the industry or want to be in the industry are pretty comfortable with the idea, to at least some extent.
Nothing new here.
Product placement has been done (with tongue firmly inserted into cheek) for a long time with Colbert and Stewart.
They’re both so great, whatever they want I want too. Plus I would love to have a miniature version of each of them to put on my bookcase.
“This may be the exact moment when Stewart and Colbert sold out.” Or, it might just be the moment when they began to take political satire to the streets…
Has whoever made this decision ever watched these two shows? Really curious to hear how Stewart & Colbert respond to this.
Simple
Jon Stewart will start making “Budget Cuts,” but he will be saved by Urban Outfitters. Then Stephen Colbert will name a segment the Urban Outfitters Indecision 2012 Run to the White House.
Much ado about nothing!
That is because Letterman is THE MAN! (But I’ll bet he has a couple of Johnny Carson Apparel suits in deep storage! And Leno has an Ed McMahon one. Mavis lets him go upstairs in his dirty mechanic outfit to fawn and coo over it and whisper sweet nothings in its ear. I’ve become fond of Leno. SOMEONE’S GOTTA BE A PUBLICIST’S BEST FRIEND!)
So long as Steward and Colbert keep on hitting Republicans/conservatives and the media with the sledgehammer of truth, I’m not going to get up in arms about this.
Diversification of revenue streams. Nothing wrong with that.
They’re not selling out at all.America buys in to this kinda thing everyday. These guys can do no wrong in my book anyway.Big Fan!
Did they even have any say?
Jon Stewart sold out in 2004 for a new contract and a shot at hosting the Oscars. Unfortunately, selling out on television leaves a trail. Watch the daily show before 2004. Stewart is reasonable and yes, funny. He says things like, “Why are you so unreasonable?” to guests who are leftists. “Why don’t you join us in the middle?” It’s there on tape! Watch it! Then he sells his soul and becomes the real radical nut job he is today. Audience numbers drop. Why? Who sacrifices ratings and humor for ideology? Why do powerful forces insist on leftist views? The answer might surprise you.
