The 19-year-old singer-songwriter/actor Nick Jonas tweeted on Saturday: “The rumors are true… I am being considered to be a judge on American Idol, and it would be a dream come true if it happens.” He even made the hashtag #nickonidol for his fans. Jonas starred earlier this year in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. His other gigs include playing Smash’s Lyle West and performing in Les Miserables’ televised 25th anniversary concert. Another American Idol judge contender is Pharrell Williams while producers have had conversations with Brad Paisley. Mariah Carey just inked a one-year deal to serve as a judge for Season 12.

Nothing against Nick Jonas, but he seems like kind of a step down from Mariah Carey and (rumored judge) Brad Paisley. Idol producers may be thinking of him as a counterpoint to X Factor’s Demi Lovato, since they both are former teen superstars. But the difference is that people still buy Lovato’s music.
Timberlake big money..nick Jonas means nothing quick name a Jonas hit? Max Weinberg makes more sense….hell, Louis CK makes more sense
This would be an AWFUL decision. Nothing would reinforce American Idol crowning white males more than this choice. Its clearly to get the teenage females again.
#nickonidol became a worldwide trending topic within 3 minutes of his tweet… He’s more relevant than you think, I suppose.
Yea, on Twitter.
Take a look at the trending topics tonight during prime time. They’ll all be WWE/wrestling related. Twitter doesn’t mean dick.
It isn’t really about record sales. If it were Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler would never have been considered either. Nick Jonas has shown that his talent didn’t stop with his brothers trio. He was great on ‘Smash’ and ‘Last Man Standing’ and surprisingly effective in ‘Les Mis’ – but he’s still young, something ‘Idol’ has needed for a long time.
But I still think the show should go back to hiring unknown music professionals who know the biz. We made Simon and Randy stars and it could surely happen again.
Here’s my take on the judge’s juggling and the networks dictating who the judges should be. The networks are anxious — almost paranoic — about the “audience” being 18 to 30 year olds. They don’t realize that young people are NOT watching TV. It’s the older folk who are watching TV. The younger people are playing video games, on facebook, at the movies, etc. and the networks have to live with the fact that the TV audience is dwindling and whoever is left is “older.”
Thus, if Jonas gets the judge’s seat — what’s to guarantee that the younger audience will come back?
Who cares if Mariah is judging? It’s just a way for her to resurrect her career.
Sorry, but AI is on its last legs. The show is supposed to be about finding a “star”, someone who represents the show’s success. Not about finding the next “judge” with the cute personality and star power.
If you go to the AI tours, it’s mainly families and “older” folk with their teen kids attending.
That’s AI’s audience and it should get used to it. Fox needs to stop meddling.
Come on now. Amdol is now in auto-pilot / cash-cow mode. No one is really checking for American Idol any longer. And Nick Jonas, he will never have a solo hit song (w/o Idol) like J-Lo. It is all about self promotion. He should defintely try acting as he is very matinee idol looking.
Nick Jonas as a judge just feels so right for this type of gig. Truly the final nail in the coffin of the AI story. How can an ‘aspiring’ artist even look at Jonas and take seriously anything he has to say? Is there a Disney TV deal at stake as well this season?
No offense to Nick, but it’s a massive joke if he is a judge.
The novelty and interest in Idol is dying – there are no surprises left, and there are dozens of competitors. Fox will milk this for a few more years and then, if they are smart, they will let it die a peaceful death.
Remember how Mariah was tweeting she might be a judge? Or when J lo was tweeting when she was first signed? Oh wait…they didn’t do that be wise they were in SERIOUS negotiations. Nick knows he doesn’t have a strong chance but wants to spread the word in hopes this will catch on. It won’t. The Jonas Bros. don’t sell records. Name one of their songs. You cants. They didn’t have hits, instead they sold teeny bopper magazines. Nick failed to impress on Smash and received low marks for following Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway so he’s gigging for a job now. I give him credit for effort but this will go nowhere.
Cliff Jones is a talent. Give the kid a break. Kay?
He’s kind of young. He’s a good guy. His maturity impresses the heck out of many so maybe that’s the cincher. He makes more sense then the time they had Ellen DeGeneres on. That was dumbest idea EVER! I think this is Idols version of Simon Cowell chosing that troubled Disney kid Demi Lovato (also 19)for X Factor. Whatever. The idea of different judges every year is a way to keep the show a bit fresh.
Hate to tell you… Nick Jonas is super talented… Add a dose of bright and articulate… It’s so funny how you guys know everything….
..Too young to dispense advice to anyone
Nick Jonas will be a perfect judge on American Idol. He is charming, smart, funny and appealing. At 19, he certainly has earned his credentials. Starred in 5 Broadway Shows, TV, movies, performed for Presidents, and has millions of record sales. He brings a new fresh look to American Idol.
