EXCLUSIVE: Parenthood’s Joy Bryant has won the female lead in the currently untitled Screen Gems’ romantic comedy that is based on the David Mamet play Sexual Perversity In Chicago, which was turned into the film About Last Night. Bryant will join Michael Ealy (in the role originated by Rob Lowe), Kevin Hart (in the Jim Belushi role), and Regina Hall (in the Elizabeth Perkins role). Steve Pink is directing a script by Bachelorette‘s Leslye Headland, and production will begin on September 17, with Will Gluck and Will Packer. They are in the process of retitling the film, which is closer in spirit to Mamet’s play than About Last Night, but which will take place in Los Angeles and not the Chicago setting of the play and first film.
“Since I first saw her in Antwone Fisher, I could tell she was going to be a movie star, and I’ve offered her several things that didn’t work out for one reason another,” said Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper. “Finally, it looks like this is going to work out because the Parenthood line producer and creator have given us warm assurances they will move mountains to make this possible for her. I really believe this will be the one that makes her a movie star. This girl is funny, smart, gorgeous and a good actress and I am excited to be delivering the role that I know she will knock out of the park.” Bryant’s repped by KillerMoxie Management.

Meow!
Joy couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag and this is the same Clint that thought Christina Aguilera carrying a movie was a good idea. Heaven help us.
I love me some Joy. Yeah Clint! He is so right.
Joy is NOT an actress. She’s about as appealing as beets. She’s a walking clothes hanger that got F$#%^ lucky. Who on this production team is unaware of this? I would much rather have seen Meagan Good, Saana Lathan, Taraji P. Henson or Anika Noni Rose in this role.
I like everyone on your list, SayWhat, including Joy! Sign me up for that movie!
You are entitled to your opinion but I have to disagree. Did you see her in Baaadasssss! She was great. She’s perfect for the part.
Joy is an awesome actress – her work in Parenthood is engaging and honest. So glad to see her getting this opportunity! Go Joy!!!
You mean Tyler Perry was unavailable? LOL. But seriously though, why does Hollywood continue to be so segregated with its productions?
The director and screenwriter are white, so is one of the producers. It’s not segregated at all.
The film is still an all-black cast. Hollywood is completely segregated. I was just shaking my head at the thought before I read that comment. I’d personally like to see equal amounts of all races in film from now on. *harmonyyyyy*
Did you think the original was segregated?
joy is awesome. go joy!
Is there really not enuff good material being submitted to studios that we have to have another remake? I know they say it will be closer to the original play, but still, it’s a remake.
This will depend heavily on the chemistry between Bryant and Ealy. I’m betting they must read well together if she got the part. She’s not my favorite… but she does solid work on Parenthood and Kevin Hart coupled with Regina Hall will both steal the show… Congrats, Joy! And kudos to Screen Gems for thinking outside the box with this remake.
STOP! I don’t care what anyone says – Iove the rob lowe /demi moore version and nothing will ever be as good. Yes – shitty chick flick….but still – so bad that it’s so good!!
Couldn’t agree more! Amazing perf by Demi, Belushi, etc. Perfect 80s. Pleasssssssse don’t ruin this movie Screen Gems.
Yes! I’m so happy for Joy. I wish her all the best. She deserves it.
WOW!! Joy is solid as actress and upcoming star.
WHOA!! On the hate here once again by jealous; very insecure atrocities of excuses for actors.
Joy’s worked her way to her moment to shine; unless you haters have proof otherwise. Good luck with your own excuse for a career in film/tv.
Sorry…not a trool.
Though this is great I would love to see an original movie written. I would love to see Hollywood take a leap of faith and show different complexions, sizes of African Americans. I’m not just talking the sad stuff like Precious but characters we all can relate to. We see it with caucasian movies a variety of characters. It like now I go to support the movies because we don’t have that many films as it is. Nevertheless Joy will do well she is the typical actress pretty, thin , right complexion and long hair.
“Are you leaving?”
“No. We’re walking in backwards.”
____
“I want you to know – I never once cheated on you!”
“Well give the man a medal. I didn’t realize it was such a sacrifice!”
I haven’t seen the movie since the 80′s but I remember those characters and that acting. Man, ‘About Last Night has the best script – I think the movie was under-rated and Demi and Elizabeth were amazing. The remake has its work cut out for them – the original film is pretty damned great.
Joy B. is beautiful, smart (didn’t she do Yale Drama?), and often overlooked – she hasn’t really had a chance to act, so I don’t see how people can judge her talent. I might actually see this because of her.
Good choice.
No one is more lavish with his compliments than Clint Culpepper when he is praising his own decisions. His critique of Burlesque was equally big-hearted. Not since Josef Stalin has anyone viewed his own work with such an abundance of generosity.
They’re going to keep it closer to the original Mamet play, but move it to Los Angeles??? Sounds like they don’t really know which direction they’re heading…
Thx for the comments being better than the article.
@tamluvstowrite This is a Hollywood business they are not going to take risks. If you want original content out there, buy a camera, write something hot, shoot it and get your vision out there. Hollywood is not going to take chances on us independents until we take a chance on ourselves.
With that said, love Ealy, so so on Kevin Harts acting, but I would like to see if they can pull off an 80′s classic in the 2k’s.
Next They’ll be remaking…Back to the Future, Breakfast Club and Fast Times at Ridgemont High (WOMP!)
This movie will bomb. Sorry. Not enough big names in it. Should’ve cast Paula Patton instead of Joy Bryant and Kevin Hart is annoying as HELL. Regina Hall?? Really?? Yuck. Michael Ealy is the only decent actor cast. Gabby Union should’ve been cast in Hall’s role.
