BREAKING: In a merger where each side brings a lot to the table, D/F Management principals Steve Dontanville and Frank Frattaroli have joined forces with Circle of Confusion to create a full-service management and production company. It matches Circle of Confusion’s writer and director clients with D/F’s acting roster and the partners will use that to grow the production business in films and TV. The new entity will operate under the Circle of Confusion banner.

The consolidation leaves them with offices in Los Angeles and New York, and a strong roster that each company brings to the mix. D/F brings a client list that includes Frances McDormand, Willem Dafoe, Scott Speedman, Michelle Monaghan, Sarah Polley, Sasha Alexander, Zach Gilford, Alfre Woodard, Benjamin Bratt, Molly Parker, Tom Cavanagh, Daniel Minahan, Mary Harron and John Krokidas. On the Circle of Confusion side, the clients include Andy and Lana Wachowski, Jon Spaihts, Max Landis, Adam Goldberg, Keith Merryman & David Newman, Doug Jung, The Dowdle Brothers, Tim Schlattman, Dan Mazeau and Oren Uziel, as well as comic creators Robert Kirkman, Brian Michael Bendis and several premiere comic book publishers including IDW and Top Cow.
Circle of Confusion also produces the AMC hit The Walking Dead, and has Powers set up at F/X and Chew at Showtime, with Stephen Hopkins set to direct the pilot. On the feature side, Circle of Confusion recently teamed with Andrew Lazar to set up Lore at Warner Brothers with Dwayne Johnson attached to star, and the company is is exec producing the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton which F. Gary Gray will be directing for New Line.
Dontanville was one of Hollywood’s top longtime talent agents before leaving WMA, and Frattaroli was also a long time WMA agent in New York before they joined forces. Lawrence Mattis formed Circle of Confusion from his basement in Queens and watched it flourish when the Wachowski siblings took off. He then expanded the company with a Hollywood outpost run by David Alpert and David Engel.
D/F principals Frattaroli and Dontanville issued this statement: “We have been searching for like-minded partners for the past several years, and Circle of Confusion’s smart, passionate and unified team is the perfect cultural fit.”
On the Circle of Confusion side, Alpert, Engel, and Mattis called the merger “a very organic and dynamic combination. This union of great people from both companies will empower us to continue providing the highest level of service to our clients in all areas, accelerate our producing activities, and expand our business in exciting ways in the future.”
From here, it looks like a good match.

Two of the worst managers I have ever met (Engel and Alpert) team up with the nice guy Dotanville who quit the business and walked into the forest.
This should go well. Pass the popcorn.
Despite Sperky the Troll, congrats to everyone. this is a good thing for the business, and couldn’t be happier for all involved.
Oh, good! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this….
CoC are one of the worst management firms in existence. Right up there with Zero Gravity.
Pass.
Why do you say that? In my experience, they’re great (for writers, at least — haven’t worked with them in any other capacity).
COC is a great firm and I’m speaking from experience. They have a smart and hungry team over there and have done very well for their clients.
Meh…
Circle’s done great things for my career recently, and this sounds like a good thing all around. I’m just hoping nobody gets fired. I like my managers.
I have worked with Lawrence over the years and he is truly a class act. Smart, kind, and humble. This industry could use far more like him. Congrats.
He seems awake. Not sure about anyone else over there.
I have worked with Lawrence too, and he is soooo fabulous!
I don’t see onetime D/F major clients like Margulies or Hathaway on that client list, or any of Dontanville’s “longtime agent” clients like Witherspoon, Hunter, Patrick Stuart, Sutherland, Weaver… throw the life preserver this way please… First the ill thought out Margulies law suit, now Circle of Confusion.. beginning to sound like Dante’s Inferno. What’s next? Bringing in Jim Wiatt and Toni Howard to run the LA office?
finally, someone who knows the business
Cue the exit of several CoC managers. A lot of good people there that are probably annoyed by the merger more than anything.
I am a competitor – and I have to say, I think this is a pretty good pairing. Steve and the other guy are older, but built a pretty awesome business over the last few years. Really solid TV money. And Circle of Confusion are top tier for lit management companies.
What about Underground merging with Prolific?
Watch that D/F client list dwindle now… this is suicide for all parties involved. CoF hangs their hat on one hit every ten years. In between, the managers there hide in their foxholes and play the cover your ass game.
this is a great thing. two boutique mgmt companies joining to do what managers do: believe in their clients and better their careers. Circle isnt a factory like some of the other agencies (i mean management companies)
Big deal. These guys are so out of the business.
PYE next? These companies barely stay afloat. They will consolidate.
None of those talent clients could green light a movie. What is Circle thinking?
So…let me get this straight…the haters of Circle Confusion here are bringing in…200, 300 mil. a year on billings, right?
Thanks for posting the financials, Steve. If true sounds more like a buy out of D/F by Circle than a “merger.” So the old guys are working for the young guys?
Wow! I’d love to see the booking reports for that place! What happens to Pancatto and Briskin and the other juniors? Do they go into competition with the young turks from Circle?
CoC has eyes for the right work. Bravo on your merger
Although I’m not in the circle as of yet, this can only be good! Anyone have advice for a credited screenwriter wanting to get in the circle, a read perhaps, outside of their submission query link?
