Modern Family creator Steve Levitan wasted no time responding after Anne Romney revealed to Entertainment Tonight that the ABC sitcom was her favorite show. He took to Twitter and made her a tongue-in-cheek offer: “Thrilled Ann Romney says ModFam is her favorite show. We’ll offer her the role of officiant at Mitch & Cam’s wedding. As soon as it’s legal.” The remark was clearly a jab at her husband, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who has made it clear he does not support gay marriage. No word yet if Anne Romney has responded to the offer. Mitt Romney will make his acceptance speech Thursday night, the final night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

Why couldn’t he have stopped at the first part of his statement and left it at that? I think it’s a mistake to assume she shares all of her husband’s politics.
That’s the point. Putting HER on the spot.
Why would he want to turn his fans against him? Not everyone who agrees with gay rights thinks gay rights includes gay marriage. It is not.
I noticed that many Conservatives enjoy watching Modern Family, but I’m not one of them. I knew the gay characters are subversive. It is becoming quite clear.
“I knew the gay characters are subversive. It is becoming quite clear.”
Because gay people are marginalized, just about any representation that doesn’t strip them of their humanity is going to be subversive. For gay people, there isn’t a choice between the personal and the political because with gay rights being voted upon and legislated (not to mention socially controlled) on a regular basis the very living life is made inherently political.
No. Levitan should not have done that. She likes the show, says it on a national stage, and he fires back with a jab that puts her in a tight spot. Not cool. He should have said we appreciate the support and leave it at that. Not how I would treat a fan in such a public forum. Even if she did believe in gay marriage, she would never waiver from supporting her husband because some douchey writer wanted to put a fan on the spot.
Ooh, you so edgy, Steve.
Dumb mistake by Levitan. Don’t show hate to fans because you disagree with them politically. It’s stupid and turns off others. He’s a TV producer and should welcome every fan he can get. He should concentrate on keeping a very good show at a high level, I thought it slipped dramatically in quality last season.
