UPDATED: In a competitive situation, Michael J. Fox’s new family comedy project has landed at the same network that aired the family comedy which made him a household name 30 years ago, Family Ties. NBC nabbed the untitled single-camera comedy co-created by Sam Laybourne (Cougar Town) and Will Gluck with an 22-episode series order for fall 2013 premiere. The setup for the Sony TV-produced comedy, loosely based on Fox’s real life, has him play a husband and father of three in New York City dealing with family, career, and challenges – including Parkinson’s Disease. (Fox, himself a father of four, has Parkinson’s and lives with his family in New York where the series will be filmed.) The pitch went to all four major broadcast networks last week, with ABC, NBC and CBS in hot pursuit. NBC outbid the other networks by offering an on-air full-season episodic pickup that the TV business had not seen in years. (NBC also agreed to shoot the series in Fox’s native New York, which is extremely rare for a comedy series. The only other half-hour series filmed in New York is NBC’s departing 30 Rock.) “From the moment we met with Michael to hear his unique point of view about this new show, we were completely captivated and on board,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “He is utterly relatable, optimistic, and in a class by himself, and I have no doubt that the character he will create – and the vivid family characters surrounding him – will be both instantly recognizable and hilarious.”
Gluck is set to direct the pilot for the series, which will be written by Laybourne. The two will executive produce, with Richard Schwartz of Gluck’s Sony TV-based Olive Bridge Entertainment co-exec producing. Filming is slated to begin later this year.
Fox first flirted with returning to TV comedy full-time last development season when he had conversations with ABC Studios but the project never materialized. The idea of a new Michael J. Fox comedy series picked up steam when the actor met with Gluck. The two hit it off, and Gluck introduced Fox to Laybourne. Gluck and Laybourne have been close friends since Laybourne worked as a writer on Gluck’s Fox series The Loop, with the two said to share similar sensibilities. Laybourne has worked on feature projects for Gluck, including Rehab, and has signed a script deal with Sony TV for a comedy to be produced by Gluck’s Sony TV-based company. That pact led to Laybourne’s involvement in the Michael J. Fox project.
Fox left his last series starring role on ABC’s Spin City when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. His final episode on the show remains one of the most watched series telecast of the past two decades. On the comedy side, he guest starred on the most recent season of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, earning an Emmy nomination. He also is nominated for his recurring role on the CBS drama The Good Wife. His Emmy tally includes 15 nominations and 5 wins, three for Family Ties and one each for Spin City and Rescue Me. (Photo: Mark Seliger)

can’t wait! love him so much!
I’m very excited to welcome Michael J. Fox back onto my TV. Love him.
Welcome back, Mr. Fox!!! It’s been way too long
Crazy deal.
NBC’s sudden love affair with straight-to-series commitments reminds me of Ben Silverman at NBC in 2008. Remember Crusoe, My Own Worst Enemy and Kath & Kim?
Bob and Ben two flimsy morons who couldn’t save NBC if their purses depended on it. (which they never do)
Hopefully this will be the big single camera hit that NBC so desperately needs. BUT, I hope even more that it won’t be a “broad comedy”, and that it will be über-smart in the vein of Community. The fact that it takes place in New York does not help. I say they might want to try making it in Edmonton as that’s where MJF is from. Sure it’s foreign, but so was Outsourced. And the short lived Jeffrey Tambor drama Studio 5-B took place in Canada, even though it was an ABC show. But still looking forward to this.
Fantastic news, I’m in all the way, can’t wait
Love the guy but…..will his health hold up well enough to do another series? I thought that’s why he left Spin City. Anyway, I wish him the best of luck on this show. A lot of people will be thrilled to see him back on television. Go for it Marty!
I saw the two words single-camera and immediately got turned off by it. NBC stop making these stupid fucking single-cams.
“Community” may be uber-smart but it is also very niche — which NBC does not need. This needs the broad appeal.
Why, in the name of all things holy, would MJF want someone from Cougartown to write his return to television? That was the worst show ever. Hope they can find some decent writers for him.
I can’t wait. What makes me most happy is that he is healthy and strong enough to give it a shot. Ya fing hoo
Yep. The Tonight Show’s cutbacks are paving the way for new programming with old favorites.
So happy to hear this..would love to see his real wife, and kids play his family, but this will be a hit..and couldn’t be more happier for Michael..he is awesome..
Love that Will Gluck is directing! He has just the right sensibility and touch for MJF. Gluck reminds me of a blossoming Aaron Sorkin, that can also direct.
Can someone tell me what series Will Gluck has created and seen through 4 or 5 seasons of production? Easy A was a cute little film that caught the critics eyes because of Emma Stone.
Michael J. Fox is one of the very few real good guys in the business. I hope his health is up to the challenge. If he can pull this off it will be more important for Parkinson’s research than the lining of anyone’s pockets.
Hope this works for Michael. He is a brave one to be taking on a project like this.
P.S. Did anybody else offer close to 22 on the air which I assume means covering Michaels fees and a big kiss to Gluck which helps Sony offset their over-all deal?
Great comment ,I agree with you if he can pull this one off it will be great for him and his fans lke myself
I think they can get away with being niche. It is Michael J. Fox, so I think people will watch just for that. It’s win win, they get the viewers without having to have broad appeal.
For those of us facing Parkinson’s, we congratulate Mr. Fox and wish him well. We look forward to an honest portrayal of the disease and the challenges PD poses. With Mr. Fox at the forefront, the show cannot be anything but great! We need laughter and we need a champion like Mr. Fox. Thanks to him for all he has done and will do in the future. He gives us hope and laughter! Wishing him well. Cannot wait!
I love MJF and wish him the very best with this. I just hope the pilot won’t be cut and interrupted by a preview for NBC’s remaining fall 2013 schedule.
Congratulations Mr. Fox, you are loved.
Zachary — You can say “Community” is über smart. Clearly some people think so. But it is also without question one of the broadest comedies on television.
