EXCLUSIVE: Feature writer-director Neil Marshall (The Descent) is set to direct the pilot episode of Starz’s upcoming pirate drama series Black Sails, executive produced by Michael Bay. The eight-episode series, created by Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine, is set 20 years before the events in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island and chronicles the adventures of fabled buccaneer Captain Flint and his men. The series is currently in pre-production in Cape Town, South Africa, with Starz brass eying it for a launch in early 2014, possibly inheriting the Spartacus slot.
Marshall recently made his TV debut directing the Blackwater episode of HBO’s fantasy series Game Of Thrones, which received a lot of praise for its depiction of the Battle of the Blackwater, described as one of the best battle sequences ever done on television. Marshall, repped by ICM Partners and Principato-Young, is currently developing the features Hellfest for Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla and CBS Films and The Last Voyage of the Demeter for Phoenix Pictures and Millennium.

Wow. Considering he directed the best episode of Game of Thrones with little to no prep, this just got a huge boost.
“Marshall recently made his TV debut directing the Blackwater episode of HBO’s fantasy series Game Of Thrones, which received a lot of praise for its depiction of the Battle of the Blackwater, described as one of the best battle sequences ever done on television.”
I love GoT, both the book series and the TV series, but calling their depiction of the Battle of the Blackwater “one of the best battle sequences ever done on television” is a stretch.
Marshall is a great director, though, cannot wait to see what he does with this project. Black Sails sounds potentially cool.
Gotta call BS on that description, though. The Got team was clearly working (intelligently) with a limited budget for a grand and epic battle scene, which meant there were a lot of actors with weapons standing next to a stone wall for most of it.
This sounds great! His episode of Game of Thrones was possibly the best hour of television I have ever witnessed.
When your only original show currently on air is tanking, why not put out two stories in the day to redirect the Starz story? I’m not the “Boss,” but that’s what I’d do – and no one would be the wiser.
why would anybody want to do a show on starz? nobody watches that network. its where great shows go to die!
Which is exactly what you likely said years ago about an HBO wannabe called Showtime, and more recently, AMC
Gonna’ be dope.
I give Starz credit for their attempts to create original programming, but other than Spartacus, I haven’t felt like watching any of their other series after seeing the pilots. The descriptions sound good, but for some reason Starz has it in their head that they can get away with poorly written plots and characters as long as they have gratuitous sex and violence as much as possible. They need to ask themselves “If I remove all the sexy, violent scenes, am I left with a compelling story?”
I heard it through the grapevine that the writing on this show is nothing short of brilliant, and very thoughtful. I applaud Starz and the risks they take. Very excited to see this one on TV. Loved The Descent, Neil Marshall is amazingly talented.
Starz continues to cancel all of their original programming due to low ratings. The truth is its a lost network that nobody is watching and since the network won’t look at themselves they blame the shows by canceling them. How can the network get any continuity with their pattern of canceling EVERY ONE of their original shows after no more than two seasons?? And I hear Magic City and Boss are next to be cancelled despite them both being high quality shows. This is why Starz will never compete with HBO and SHOWTIME.
