ABC has given a formal green light to a new pilot for Kings Of Van Nuys starring John Leguizamo. ABC first ordered a pilot for the multi-camera project, based on the British format Only Fools And Horses, last season. It missed the cut but ABC chief Paul Lee, a big fan of the original series, liked it enough to order a retooling. Steven Cragg and Brian Bradley, who wrote the original pilot, penned a new version. A month ago at TCA, stressing the ABC’s ongoing commitment to the multi-camera comedy genre, Lee noted that Kings Of Van Nuys was being re-piloted. Back then, the new script was still being written and deals with the actors were being made.
The network is now going ahead with shooting a new pilot after securing virtually the entire team from the original pilot, including the entire cast and director Ted Wass. The ABC Studios-produced Kings Of Van Nuys chronicles the misadventures of two streetwise brothers, Del (Leguizamo) and Rodney (Dustin Ybarra), and their aging grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) as they concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires. Co-starring in the pilot, now in pre-production to tape Oct. 2, are Bridesmaids‘ Wendi McLendon-Covey and BJ Bales.

Screened the pilot in May. It wasn’t funny. At all. Johnny Legs is a good second banana but not the lead in a show. Not sure why they are trying again.
“Not sure why they are trying again.” Did you not read the article? The head of ABC is a “big fan” of the UK original. The project is getting a second chance solely because this is a personal obsession of Englishman Paul Lee. That’s why they are trying again.
I’ll just watch “Episodes” instead, thanks.
Whats going on with ABC Rebel Wilson project. I think Paul Lee told a reporter at TCA you might see it on in Spring. If that’s the case , shouldn’t they film soon?
Paul Lee’s “Cavemen”
Funny, five comments. Only thing peeps comment oh is twilight movies, idol, and j lo. Mostly secretaries.
Love Wendi McLendon-Covey. But Rodney… the hair got my attention because I recognized him from somewhere. Found him. “HOP”. Almost didn’t recognize him behind the hair in that Matt Damon movie, Bought a Zoo.
Don’t know how old he is, but when I Googled to see what was behind the hair in Zoo, saw a video clip of him doing stand up. A comic? can’t hurt. I laughed my ass off watching him demonstrate how he learned to fight absent a dad to teach him. Video games, and he uses sound effects Mortal Combat. Did a great Steven Segal impersonation. Don’t know who he is, but cast in pretty good company, so I’ll watch and see how they stack to the Brit version.
Oh, and I do watch Episodes. (God I hope that is extreme parody of the decision makers in fantasy land). Cast with some heavyweights, he must bring something.
Glad they changed the name. The Brit name just isn’t here. Kings of Van Nuys works for me. I never saw the Brit name fitting in here.
If he’s half as funny as what I saw on his standup, and Christophr Lloyd is his best self, always a hoot, & John Leg-Z, a surprise for me only because can’t see getting him past censors, but I want to see it. I’m a girl, so found pic of the hair dude, and has anyone seen that face behind the hair? I kid you not, that burley haired comic, has “girl pretty” features. Swear to God. He is hispanic, but has blue eyes, this perfect nose, and lips that are actually red. Not makeup, actually red. But anyone remember that Meg Ryan trademark of the upturned corners of her mouth, lambchop has same thing. Wouldn’t know it’s behind all that hair. Not subjective. Kids got pretty parts. LOL I’m sure he’d love to know I just said that. Maybe that’s why so much hair.
Either way, looking forward to seeing the revamp of the Brit show, USA style. Hope it’s still funny. Anyone know when it hits the airwaves?
