Nickelodeon’s housecleaning continues. Two weeks after the kids cable network cancelled comedy series Victorious after three seasons, it has done the same with freshman How To Rock. This means that three live-action Nick series will end their run this fall, Victorious, How To Rock and iCarly. Like with Victorious, the news of How To Rock‘s demise was delivered by the series’ showrunner on his blog. In a post titled How To Rock The Future, How To Rock executive producer David Israel said that Nickelodeon had opted not to pick up a second season of the show and thanked the show’s cast, crew and fans. The move also follows Nick ordering a slew of new live-action and animated series and pilots, including two iCarly spinoffs, earlier this month as the network appears to be overhauling its lineup amidst a ratings slump.
Created by Jim O’Doherty based on the book How to Rock Braces and Glasses by Meg Haston, How To Rock stars Master P’s daughter Cymphonique Miller. The series got off to a solid start in February with 3.3 million total viewers tuning to the premiere, which won its time period across all TV with kids 6-11, tweens 9-14 and kids 2-11. The series remained a strong tween draw throughout the spring, and its second episode, How to Rock a Messy Bet, hit #1 for kids TV shows on iTunes. The series recently slipped in the ratings, but its total viewership has stayed above 2 million. Of the 26-episode first season of How To Rock, 17 episodes have aired. The next original airs Sept. 22, with the Christmas-themed season/series series airing Dec. 8. Here is Israel’s post:
How To Rock The Future
Hey, HTR Fans.
David Israel here. How to Rock’s showrunner and Executive Producer.
There have been rumors swirling around about the future of How To Rock so I thought it time to set the record straight. Nickelodeon has decided, unfortunately, not to give How To Rock a second season. I know this news will be very disappointing for many of you. Believe me, it’s disappointing for me, too.
Why isn’t the show coming back? There’s no one simple answer. Nickelodeon is going through a transition right now. You already know that iCarly and Victorious are not coming back. Nickelodeon has many new shows in production and development that they believe will better suit their audience. While I don’t love their decision, I have no choice other than to accept it. The Nickelodeon executives who’ve worked on the development and production of How to Rock have been incredibly supportive of the show this past year. They’re good people who want nothing more than to make the best shows for their audience. I know it wasn’t an easy decision for them — they truly do like the show — and I’m grateful for the time and energy they’ve put in to make How To Rock as good as it is. Or was.
There is good news. We made 26 episodes. You’ve only seen 17 of them. Meaning — quick, do the math — there are NINE new episodes still to come and Nick will be showing all of them. Seasons of British shows are often 6 episodes. So if you think British right now, you still have a season and half of new How To Rocks. Smashing.
The next episode that will air is “How To Rock a Singing Telegram” on September 22nd. In it, Gravity 5 raises money for the school by performing singing telegrams in several different musical styles (including one like Big Time Rush, which is awesome). At the heart of the episode is a touching story about friendship. I know you’ll all like it. On September 29th, you’ll see “How To Rock a Yearbook” where Gravity 5 tries to get their own yearbook page, just like the Perfs have. The Perfs, of course, are two steps ahead. You’ll also learn why Zander is so secretive about last year’s yearbook from his old school — and why Stevie and Kevin will stop at nothing to uncover the secret.
There are 3 new episodes in October, including “How To Rock a High School Sensation” with special guest star Romeo Miller and “How To Rock a Camping Trip” in which you’ll be shocked which of the gang takes charge after Zander eats some bad berries. The acoustic campfire version of “Only You Can Be You” will melt you.
Our season — and series — will conclude on December 8th with “How To Rock Christmas.” Tremendous episode. Festive, funny, touching… and Kevin and Nelson are dresses as elves.
My biggest regret about How To Rock not getting a 2nd season is that I won’t be going to work everyday with the truly remarkable people who made the show happen. You know the cast and they are all incredibly talented and gracious people. Cymphonique, Samantha, Halston, Lulu, Max, Chris, Noah, Kirk, Jacob and our many guest stars brought the show to life by truly committing themselves to their characters. (Though I’m not sure Chris and Noah were ever really acting — they are that ridiculous.) I will miss our run-throughs and rehearsals and their pre-show rituals that I was fairly close to figuring out. (“Bunny bunny bunny bunny…”) All of them will continue to shine on screens and stages for years to come and I hope they look back at their How To Rock days with pride.
Behind the cast were a team of writers, producers, directors, production staff and a tireless, phenomenal crew who poured their collective hearts and souls into the show to make sure it looked good, sounded good and felt like a show worthy of being on Nickelodeon or any other channel. We never settled for average, always strived for excellence, and I think we hit far more home runs than we struck out. (Sam and Halston, that is a baseball reference. Can explain it to u more privately.)
Thank you, cast and crew, for your hard work and passion. This past year has been the best professional experience of my life. I hope it was as fun and rewarding for you as it was for me.
And then there are you fans. Wow are you people devoted. Especially you Shippers. As this was my first Nickelodeon show, I have never experienced fandom like I’ve seen on How To Rock. I’ve been overwhelmed (and slightly terrified) by your passion for the show and detailed observations of moments that occurred in various episodes. I am truly sorry that the How To Rock storylines won’t be continuing for multiple seasons because I know you would have been following — and complaining — every step of the way. You have no idea how gratifying it is — Chris and Noah, now would be a good time to google “gratifying” — to have the characters you helped create and develop strike such a chord with so many people. I’ve loved reading your comments about the show on Twitter (even those from the fearsome Zevie Nation) and look forward to seeing what you have to say about the final nine episodes. (Except those from the fearsome Zevie Nation).
I did read some comments about Nickelodeon after the Victorious news came out. I know how difficult it can be when some of your favorite shows go away. And I get the frustration. Try to keep in mind that the people at Nick really are trying to serve their audience the best they possibly can. Be open to the new shows that will be coming on in the next several months. They may surprise you.
Thank you, How To Rock Family, for going on this journey with me. I have loved every minute of it (almost) and could not be more proud of this season. Rather than focusing on what we didn’t get to do, let’s focus on all we’ve done. Life’s too short to worry, don’t you know it’s true. Only you can be you, only I can be me.
Rock On.

Wow. Surprising news. I guess Nickelodeon is definitely looking to overhaul after their overall ratings declines.
Nick seems like they soon shout down I am really starting to like Disney channel more show don’t go that quickly
i feel the same way. i mean they closed ICARLY, VICTORIOUS, AND O HOW TO ROCK. those 3 shows were OVER HALF OF THEIR VIEWS. all thats left is SEE DAD RUN AND MARVIN MARVIN. i hardly watch those. if u take all of those shows out all you have left is THE CARTOONS and NICK JR… I CANT BELIEVE NICK….I USED TO LOVE IT BUT NOW, I LLLOOOVVVEEE CARTOON NETWORK AND DISNEY CHANNEL
ok so we go to ALL this work in researching and promoting a show to have it ONLY try and prove itself after 26 eps?? IDIOCY. Look at “Friends”, look at Cheers, look at ??? for the past 30 years and you find that ONE season means NOTHING. HTR deserves more than this, Master P go fight for your kid’s show and KsomeA in getting it renewed. Blessings to you and yours, Pastor Mark S, Colorado.
This is why Nickelodeon is down in the ratings, I don’t like any of the shows they have now, Spongebob included — I think it’s best Nickelodeon stop trying new original programming and be a classic cartoon/Nicktoon network like Cartoon Network USED to be.
Not going to miss any of those shows really, just their actors. And not watching the iCarly spinoffs either.
Seriously? Cartoon Network is actually on the rise with ratings because of how good their original programming has been doing. Networks need to roll out new shows if they want to stay relevant with their core demographic. They’re a kids network, not an “I used to be a kid” network.
That’s what I’m saying, the reason why Nickelodeon did so well during the 90′s and early 2000′s was because they were a KIDS channel. Not a tween girl channel. That what they get for trying to recreate Disney’s short-lived success of “Hannah Montana” and “High School Musical”. They deserve their ratings drop and I hope it gets worse.
You are not the reason Nick’s ratings are down. It’s purely Nielsen. Look it up.
And, by the way, no kid watches “old” cartoons.
Old cartoons are the best by the way.. Some shows now like, “Dog with a Blog” are a bit dumb.. I thought talking animal shows were over..
So true! Dog with a blog is the stupidest show I have ever seen!! I am 13 years old and the actors are horrible! The dog and the little red head girl are the best actors on the show.
Yes,I watched Dog with a Blog with my 5 year old sister and I cannot comprehend how such a stupid show was picked up. I remember the last talking dog being on Nickelodeon and that was Eddie McDowell, that show however had a solid story. A mean boy turns in a dog and has to do 1000 good deeds to turn back.
That is wrong animal shows r sooooooooooo much better!!!! couse i am a ANIMAL PERSON SO U SHIT UP ABOT THAT
YOU CAN’T DO THAT ON TELEVISION! bring it back!
I really loved this seres and I think that Nick shouldv’e kept the show because its a let down on most of the people. Ths was a good show and i think that nick shouldv’e kept it because i looked forward to watching every amazing actress do their job correctly.Nick should stick to what they have now and worry about when the time comes to produce the newer shows!
I was surprised to read that How to Rock was cancelled after one season. I hope that the actors will get another show real soon. I hope that How to Rock first season will be available for sales on DVD.It will be interested to see what new show that replace the old one.
Makes no sense at all to take good shows off the air that kids currently watch! Especially Victorious who had just previously won an award(s). I don’t understand it!
I have never met or worked with a classier producer than David Israel. Sad about How To Rock. Nickelodeon’s loss. But David, you definitely ROCK.
It’s interesting that Disney is doing so much better than Nick. Clearly the pendulum has swung the other way. Of course, Nick isn’t making the situation any better by having Dan Schneider provide more shows. The format for his shows has become so predictable (stupid acting adults, etc.), that I can’t see how the new shows will do any better. One thing both networks need to do is cut down on the shows that revolve around the characters singing.
Have you ever watched Disney Channel? Parents should be trying to burn it to the ground. Every live action show is exactly the same and the shows are just breaks in the Disney promotional machine. How many different Disney products can we jam down your throat in 2 minuted before we go back to the crummy show?
At least Disney channel cares about their shows and stars enough and treats them well. They also don’t air the same show seven or eight times a day like Nick does constanly with “Spongebob Squarepants”.
Disney has Gravity Falls to thank for it’s rise back into popularity. And of course, CN has Regular Show, Gumball, and Adventure Time. Nickelodeon is still turning tricks with Spongebob, which needs to be put down soon. While it’s satisfying to think that kids really do care about quality programming and 2D animation, it’s also sad to know they’ll still watch anything with songs, dances, hot boys/girls, and ZERO PLOT AND MORALS.
Never even heard of the show, but what a classy leter from the showrunner and producer. Kudos to him, and hopefully somebody like him can find another job quickly.
The man will be ok.. He is already working as the Co-Executive Producer of Marvin Marvin. I was at one of the tapings and they mentioned his name and title. Man that show is funny!! My daughter loved it and I for one was entertained. Will be watching it when it comes out.
With all the political and moral talk about what kind of family it’s better for kids to be raised in — hetero, gay, single parent, divorced, married, etc. — there is absolute agreement that children always do better when they’re raised by humans. A TV network without live people removes the anchor from children’s perception of reality and role models. Is Nick the new Skinner box?
A wonderfully classy, refreshingly snark-free letter from David Israel. I don’t know the show or him, but I found his words to be elegant, heartfelt and kind… not enough of that in our world right now. Good luck in the future.
Great letter classy and funny and touching. But why did her parents name her Cymphonique? Crazy name. Something very strange about mom and dad.
Surprised to see this. I will have a very disappointed little girl in my house — she and her friends played “How to Rock” all the time. I had thought the show was popular.
I’m not surprised “How To Rock” was cancelled. It seemed to be trying to be too many different things at once. I’m still shocked about “Victorious.” That show was clicking on all cylinders. If a network executive can’t see that, he/she doesn’t deserve the job he/she has.
Re Victorious, that cast is HUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Lots of these tween shows have a cast of under 6 regulars, with a few more “recurring” that in reality are in virtually every show. That must keep costs down.
Victorious has 7-9 regulars. Plus, since it is a “hit” I feel like there are 2-4 of those characters that wanted to cash in. After season 3 is when casts typically negotiate big raises. Victoria Justice is a beautiful young women, who has eyes on the movies. The price tag for keeping her was probably exorbitant, and scuppered the deal.
Lets not forget that these cable nets have very few outlets for syndicated tween fair. ABC wont buy from Nick, thanks to Disney and ABC fams’ own product. Likewise Viacom won’t be buying from ABC. So Nick sees Victorious’s costs about to skyrockted, with no real way to recoup the costs. I get the decision.
Nick/viacom bought george lopez from abc to syndicate on nick at night
Looks to me like Nickelodeon’s loss is becoming Disney Channel’s gain.
was thinking the same thing lol I can recall when Cartoon Network gave up on Naruto and almost all marvel and anime productions, Disney XD scooped it right up lol How ironic. Thats probably what will happen to Nick’s great shows.
Still no word on when Nick will air the new seasons of HOUSE OF ANUBIS and SUPAH NINJAS are set to premiere respectively.
3 shows down 2 left (house of Anubis & Big Time Rush) this is awful
Please nick cancel that weirdo Fred!!
Thank god! Nick is finally getting rid of all these generic, cheesy live action shows about kids becoming musicians and being famous. All it took was a massive ratings drop and negative responses to these shows to make them realize how low they fallen. “How To Rock” had to be the worse show they’ve ever aired on the channel, even worse than “Bucket and Skinner”. Just another show about music with a laugh track that goes off every few seconds even though nothing funny happened trying to recreate the success of “Hannah Montana”which was an awful show. Hopefully they’ll focus back to quality programming and creator driven cartoons like they did back in the 90?s and early 2000?s. I remember the days when Nickelodeon was a dedicated to kids and not tween girls like Disney Channel has done since “High School Musical”. Though Disney Channel starting to add animated shows to replace the live action ones like “Gravity Falls” (big ratings success) and more to come in the year 2013. Hope Nick cancels “Big Time Rush” too and adds more Nicktoons to their schedule. And if they fire their new President Cyma Zarghami and change the logo back to a splat, I’ll fully regain my faith in Nickelodeon again.
What you’re not getting though is that they have ‘Nicktoons’ which is full of cartoons. They show cartoons all day. So Nickelodeon should not be filled with cartoons because we already have that channel. Besides what are teens and tweens supposed to watch otherwise? 12 and 13 year olds don’t necessarily want to watch cartoons but they might not get on with older shows either. I happen to know that Victorious especially was and forever will be very popular. Just check out Twitter. And kids/teens like music these days. You always see people with headphones in or hear about new albums. It’s because music isn’t just music anymore, it’s about expression; showing the world the way you feel and who you are. These shows also created a place for fans to go, they had something to believe in. They showed an admittedly slightly distorted view of high school. The tough times but also all the great things you can get from it. They teach kids things about the real world. Unlike cartoons which show that after being flattened by a piano or such, people pop back up again. There has even been a case of a child hitting his friend over the head with a hammer because he thought he’d act like a cartoon and be okay. The boy died. I’m not dissing cartoons either, I grew up watching things like ‘The Loony Tunes’ and ‘Tom and Jerry’ and I loved them. Nickelodeon did not have a massive ratings drop either by the way. Victorious has been more popular that iCarly after even fewer seasons and, as stated above, How To Rock did well too. The programmes being cancelled reach out to a massive range of people. From kids aged roughly 11 to parents who say they’ve wound up watching with their kids and even when their kids arent’t around. They still find them funny. If you don’t believe me, ask my followers on Twitter. Although I’m not sure you’d like their responses to your post.
no, icarly, victorious, and htr all dropped to 2 million, but victorious went up to 3 million on the last episode.
What are you talking about? Nick has had a 30% drop over the past year. These shows have brought in low ratings especially over the past couple months. “How To Rock” has brought the lowest ratings Nick has ever had. “How To Rock Ce-lo” only had 2.1 million viewers despite weeks of advertising. The only show that brings in consistently high ratings despite being shown about 11 times a day is SpongeBob (usually 3 million viewers for reruns). And if these sitcoms were original and not all about singing like they used to be like Drake and Josh, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Kenan and Kel, All That, The Amanda Show, Pete&Pete, maybe they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re in now. How can kids relate to another kid who’s a pop star? They can’t. And Nicktoons like “Hey Arnold”, “As Told By Ginger”, “The Wild Thornberrys” did teach lessons. And other Nicktoons were just for fun and were actually funny unlike the shows they have on now where the humor is forced. Tonight Nick aired Rugrats: In Paris and I bet it will bring in the highest ratings Nick has had in months. And I know millions of people who would disagree with your post, get your facts straight.
I have to agree with this. Kids need shows they can relate to. And although I will miss Icarly and Victorious a lot. I do understand that Nick needs to go back to it’s original formula. It worked. That is why Disney is starting to kick Nick’s butt again. They are going back to what they know kids and pre-teens like.
Also Rugrats: In Paris was trending on Twitter tonight, the first thing to trend from Nickelodeon since “The 90′s Are All That” premiered on TeenNick July 25, 2011. And the Nicktoons channel does not air any classic Nicktoons, only Power Rangers (why?) and the Nicktoons of the past five years. The only good shows they air are Jimmy Neutron, Invader Zim, and Avatar.
Nick is really grimmy I say take the show to another network like abc family or Disney but this show was good and funny. I love cymphonique’s voice. Plus it’s not like the show was a bad influence on kids just music and accepting people for who they are.
Another plea to bring back Legends of the Hidden Temple PLEASE.
David Israel is a classy guy. I’ve been really bummed about iCarly, Victorious, and How to Rock; iCarly at least had a good run, but Victorious had life left in it yet and How to Rock’s only been on the air for six months. I haven’t been a fan of anything on the Disney Channel since Lizzie McGuire (and to date myself a bit here, that show was on when I was in high school), but they’re obviously doing something right, and I think that something is actually PROMOTING their shows instead of just assuming people will take the time to find out when new episodes are on and watch them. Kids don’t really do that. It doesn’t help that Nick’s airing schedules are crazy erratic, either, or that they play three or four shows a hundred times a day and hardly ever play anything else. I’ve been loving Nick’s programming lately but I’m not sure they know how to handle their channel.
All the good shows on Nick are ending why have cartoons the only good one right now is Disney’s Gravity Falls well iCarly had a good run and Victorious should have gone till 2014 and How To Rock need more season sure low rating but overall a great show
Good ! I hope they get rid of BTR too. Definitely agree with Greg. I wish Nick would play ALL the old 90′s cartoons for like a week, for old time sake. How To Rock was possibly the worst show to ever air on Nick (Besides Bucket & Skinners which was horrendous). It literally had the same damn plot every show. Cymphonique would take her friends for granted/embarrass them/act better than them/try to control or boss them around while trying to compete with the “perfs”. Her friends decide to leave her and not put up with her controlling/bossy attitude, and then she realizes how poorly she treated her friends. Than to make up for it, they perform a song to some random crowd which consists of Cymphonique cheesy lip synching, and her band in the background terribly pretending to play their instruments. In the end they somehow defeat the “perfs”. EVERY timeeeee.
Actually Nick already did that. It was on teen nick. They showed all the 90s shows for a very long time.
ICarly used to be a really great show. I think the storyline went downhill after the whole “Sam and Freddy” relationship. They just ran out of stuff to do. Then they made Gibby (the most annoying person on the damn show) a main character, alongside the black guy (can’t remember his name) that worked at the smoothie shop. Terrible. I think that show just ran it’s full course. So glad that’s going off the air. Victorious was a really great show. But I won’t cry because it’s over. Hopefully the new shows will be much better and more thought will be put into the plot/character development.
David said he wanted to hear what we think of the new episodes, but not the zevie shippers. I’m seriously hoping that means zacey will happen. In sure it won’t, but this show was based of of the book, where zacey is the main part of the story. So it makes more sense that way. I’m sad the show is ending, but since they never make new episodes, these 9 episodes are something to look forward to.
