Has The Hunger Games triggered Americans’ interest in archery? The bow-and-arrow sport is NBC’s No. 1 cable ratings winner, the network says, averaging 1.5M daytime viewers. NBC’s coverage of the London Olympics is breaking records and an upswing in interest in archery given the popularity of the film is serendipitous.
“Maybe it’s the Hunger Games phenomenon”, NBC research exec Alan Wurtzel said. He likened its popularity to the surprise interest in curling events of the Vancouver winter games two years ago. “The numbers for archery have been nothing less than huge.” Bigger, even, than numbers for basketball but individual Team USA games in that sport still perform better.
In The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen learned archery so she can provide for her starved family. It’s not impossible to believe that there’s a good amount of crossover interest from fans of the movie. In the wake of its release, sports shops all over the US reported a rise in sales of archery equipment, while ranges were said to be overflowing with teens. Lawrence was trained by five-time Team USA Olympic archer Khatuna Lorig, who scored the first perfect bullseye of her career at the London games, taking out a camera embedded in the board in the process.

Doesn’t surprise me. In fact, the Hunger Games feel might help Revolution this fall. You can have a show that borrows slightly from another show as long as the writing is good. The X Files borrowed from Night Stalker. Revolutions promos make it look somewhat Hunger Games yet different which is good and will lead to great ratings.
On the other hand, NBC should probably just go ahead and cancel Go On right now. They might as well save themselves the money.
Go on? Nah, I’m thinking Animal Hospital (is that it?) will be the big flop of the three new comedies. Go on at least looked funnyish, Animal Hospital just had a monkey
Before this the most famous connection between Hollywood and competitive archery is the fact that Geena Davis was at one time one of the top 24 women archers in the United States.
Um, or maybe The Avengers’ Hawkeye has something to do with it?
South Korea dominates archery.
Even many of the archers from other countries that do well have been trained by Korean coaches.
Naw. It has to be the WORLD’s biggest movie that brought back bows and arrows to the mainstream, AVATAR!
Revolution looks nothing like the Hunger Games!
I think this also has a lot to do with the fact that NBC is deciding to SHOW it. Remember that NBC is very selective in what events it is showing. What it shows in full and what it shows as recaps at night. IF and only if you were showing every single event, could you really be saying this. Till you stop taking control of what is being shown, you can’t really decide what event is really being looked at the most. I for one would like to see more of the swimming events, and more of the diving. While I LOVE archery, I find it quite boring to watch, especially with all the .. uhm.. commentary over the top of it. I don’t want to see the NBC interviews, I want to see the events themselves. That is just me however.
As a member of the archery community, I can tell you that Avatar had exactly ZERO impact on the growth of archery interest in the U.S. and Hunger Games has had an EXPONENTIAL impact.
@ jACK
Yep. The question is how close to Hunger Games showruners will do it. In promos has a lot of Archery, batles with sword etc. bUT I AFREE Revolution looks outstanding, like next LOST – freaking awesome!
Should I be a little embarrassed to admit that I considered taking some lessons after reading the books? Sad, but true.
I’ve never seen Hunger Games and have no interest in probably ever seeing the overrated crap but I have been watching archery during these Olympic games more this year than I did before.
How about BRAVE?
