EXCLUSIVE: Deadline told you two weeks ago that Paramount was courting Kevin Costner to play a key role opposite Chris Pine in the Kenneth Branagh-directed Jack Ryan film. I’m told that Costner has now accepted and they are working out a deal that will give him the chance to become a linchpin in not only the Jack Ryan film with Chris Pine, but also the spinoff franchise Without Remorse, for which the studio is now courting The Dark Knight Rises villain Tom Hardy, with Christopher McQuarrie rewriting to direct.
And the deal coming together envisions Costner potentially headlining his own film. He will play William Harper, a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly, the latter of whom becomes the CIA operative Clark by the end of Without Remorse. Branagh is reportedly going to play a villain as well as direct the Ryan film, and as Deadline first told you, Keira Knightley is the favorite to play Ryan’s love interest in the film.
I’ve been waiting to see Costner return to a big studio role and this sounds like a good one both for him and for Paramount. Costner galvanized Hatfields & McCoys, the History Channel miniseries which got a record cable rating and is up for 22 Emmy Awards, and it is clear that audiences want to see more of him. He has been very selective, but he’s stepping up here into a big opportunity. Paramount, which like every studio is looking to build tent poles, has a good opportunity for more than one here by cross-pollinating characters. In a way, Costner is stepping into a role that seems similar to what Marvel Studios and Disney have done with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who got his biggest screen time in The Avengers after being seen in Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. There is even a Nick Fury film in development, but I’m sure that Costner is getting paid better than the lowball salary with nine options that those Marvel actors were prodded to sign. Costner’s repped by WME and One Talent.

Yes. Perfect role for Costner. Glad he’s back and hopefully he will be directing aging soon. Also Keira knightly for the win. Quite the pedigree of talent they are amassing for this. Gonna be good… Pending the script but I have faith in Costner and brannaugh being involved it will be.
Love this. Love Costner in the role. Love Hardy for Clark. This whole thing has just become something I can’t wait to see. Well done, Paramount. Now, don’t screw it up.
Pine + Hardy – Witherspoon = better
Costner’s patience is paying off.
Costner? Yes. Pine? Yes? Knightly? Ew. Will Keira spend most of her screen time pursing her lips and attempting to look sultry?
Costner was great in Upside of Anger, in my book his finest performance to date
+1.
MR Brooks was Costner’s best work, But I agree he did a very nice job in a very underrated movie.
Finally a Conservative playing a Conservative. I never thought I’d live to see it.
Pine+Branagh+Costner+Knightley= AWESOME!!!
Waterworld. The Postman. Robin Hood & Message In a Bottle. Revenge.
Dances with Wolves. JFK. The Untouchables & Field of Dreams. Bull Durham.
Unless this is an ensemble piece I don’t get Keira taking this “furniture” role unless it is for the money and a tent pole credit. I wouldn’t have thought she needed either. If this latest incarnation of a Jack Ryan film is to formula she will be asked to do little more than offering a variety of “concerned” and “supportive” postures. I am sure she can do that with the best of them but aside from the pedigree and the promotional advantages that brings, I think she is just too big to play this role.
So happy to see Costner getting the chance to headline again. He’s one of the best pure “movie stars” we have left.
Glad to see Costner back. He is a fine actor and criminally under-rated.
But K Knightly ? Please say NO. Aren’t there enough non-talented actresses already getting work in town ? She is nothing but ‘Look at me.I’m pretty.I’m pouty’
Too old.
Rebooting jack Ryan. Really? Ford affleck= Penn Costner.
They want a tent pole off of a Ludlum spinoff series. The cold war is dead didn’t they notice. Damon’s series of movies worked for it was him against the system.
Samuel Jackson with Penn and Costner might work, but bin laden is dead, and the studios can not take china’s movie production money and make China, Syria, Iran the bad guy. Can not the studios carve out a new batch of spy films. It’s very simple spy gets killed, friend spy wants revenge is betrayed or has to find a villian.
mission impossible worked.
Who’s Penn?
Cold War dead? Really? The Russian intelligence and security services are more active now than at anytime during the actual Cold War. Look who’s running Russia. The KGB’s successor agencies (FSB and SVR) and the GRU (military intel) are more powerful now than at anytime during the Soviet period. They used to be the bodyguard and now they’re the boss. Putin’s spent his entire time in power stacking the Kremlin deck with all his KGB aces. And all of them, to the man, still refer to the United States as “the Main Adversary.” Educate yourself.
Jack Ryan is from Tom Clancy, not Robert Ludlum. Get your facts straight before whinging about China and bad guys.
Agree with an earlier comment on The Upside of Anger. A highly under-rated film with wonderful performances. If it had been released later on the year, Kevin Costner and Joan Allen might have had a real shot at Oscar nominations.
No Way Out. The Untouchables. Field Of Dreams. Bull Durham. Dances With Wolves. Tin Cup.
Tin Cup is brilliant. Nice to know it’s not totally under-appreciated. Great performance by Costner.
how about some love for the greatly underrated THIRTEEN DAYS? i actually thought it was one of Costner’s weaker performances but the movie overall was riveting. Nice to see costner return to the political thriller genre, as No Way Out was also great.
Glad to see they are taking this property seriously…Paramount completely screwed up the franchise after Hunt…never should have hired Ford – he is one of my favorite actors, but he was too old for Ryan at that point. Then they completely ruined the timeline and took the teeth out of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger which were both pretty bloody books. The problem with this is…the world has changed, and they have already made all the most filmable books. Are they going to start remaking the movies? I’m not opposed to it, but are they going to ignore Cardinal of the Kremlin and Hunt for Red October? Just wish they hadn’t so royally fucked up this franchise.
Well perhaps, and this would be smart, they could set the films during the Cold War.
Sorry, but they’ve been raping this franchise since Patriot Games. As much as I love the books, the subject matter is now quite dated and you know damned-well they are going to do the Clancy adaptations as Cold War stories. Without Remorse even more so than the others as it’s set in the Vietnam era.
I’m just going to assume that they they’re going to butcher all of it like they did The Sum of All Fears to the point of where it bears no resemblance to the original story.
Good for Costner but I just have no interest.
*they AREN’T going to them as Cold War stories, that is.
I’ve read most of Clancy. Ludlum = damon=$= this bullshit spin off of Clancy.
Penn= pine
Their is no enemy Kenneth as a Russian villain. Unless he,s going bald,= putin the plot is dead on arrival. Think the reboot of total recall. Pretty faces does not= $
Mr Costner, please make another western “Open Range” was outstanding also it’s nice to see you back. I loved Mr Brooks great role in a very dark film..No Way Out…Silverado…The Untouchables…Bull Durham…Tin Cup…The Field Of Dreams…For The Love Of The Game…The Upside Of Anger…The Bodyguard…Fyi-Kevin Costner was the dead friend is one of the best films ever “THE BIG CHILL”.
