EXCLUSIVE: Alexander Ludwig has landed the role of Navy SEAL Shane Patton in Lone Survivor, the Peter Berg-directed adaptation of the Marcus Luttrell book. Ludwig plays a soldier on a covert mission that goes wrong, joining Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana. The film is being financed by Emmett/Furla Films for a September 25 start in New Mexico. Universal Pictures, which developed the movie, will distribute. Lone Survivor tells the harrowing story of how Luttrell and his Navy SEAL team members fought to stay alive after being ambushed in Afghanistan in 2005 by Taliban forces during a covert mission in the Hindu Kush mountain region, where the team went to kill a terrorist leader. Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, Akiva Goldsman, Barry Spikings are producing with Emmett/Furla’s Randall Emmett and George Furla, and Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson.
Alexander was most recently seen in The Hunger Games, and he recently wrapped Sony’s Grown Ups 2, playing the son of David Spade’s character. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

After Battleship why not put Pete Berg back on water, makes sense to me.
The book is truly unbelievable read.
If you really want to know what it is to be a SEAL, to function at that level, read this book. A bit politically preachy at the outset, conservatively so, don’t let that put you off, continue to read on. (If I had been his editor, that aspect would have been much better addressed).
One thing not mentioned above is that the SEAL’s troubles came about because they released, rather than killed. 2 goat herders who came upon them and they on turn went to the Taliban. Conducting yourself honorably and morally is not without cost and sacrifice. Once in the fire fight the officer in charge, Lt Michael Murphy, chose to walk into the open field of fire and call to base camp for help because communications could not be made from a safe position. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor
I agree with you about the politics of the book, but I can only imagine that Luttrell is a man to be reckoned with…if that’s what he really wanted to write, I can’t imagine an editor getting in his way.
The book is marvelous and harrowing, and how amazing is it that the man survived. I think it’s very likely the whole squad would have survived if they had just killed the herders who stumbled upon them, but they acted according to human conscience instead of military reality and paid a huge price. What a story.
Why are we celebrating this book? Marcus Luttrell is no different than Matt Bissonnette writing the OBL Raid book. There is a code and both of these guys broke it by telling their stories for personal gain…
You are a fool…It has nothing to do with a “code” or personal gain. It has to do with telling the story of our nations true hero’s, the ones who can no longer speak for them selves. The ones who without books like this would become a forgotten flag on a dresser in two generations. Their stories need to be told, remembered, and celebrated.
I’m sure Alexander will be an excellent choice to play Shane Patton. I saw him in the Hunger Games and was very convincing as Cato. He has the athletic ability that, with the right coaching, will be very realistic. Just hope the script writers don’t clutter the story with politics and preaching; the reality will be impressive enough. From a veteran that’s been through the fire.
Godspeed to all.
