Veteran publicist Dale Olson died today. He was 78 and died of cancer. Olson’s career included nearly two decades at Rogers & Cowan before he opened his own firm Dale C. Olson & Associates. Olsen also worked for prolific independent production shingle the Mirisch Company run by brothers Walter, Marvin and Harold. Through the years he also worked with the likes of Shirley MacLaine, Maggie Smith, Alfred Hitchcock, David Wolper, Gene Kelly, Steve McQueen, James Earle Jones, Rod Steiger, Sidney Poitier, Clint Eastwood, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. He worked on publicity campaigns for films such as In The Heat Of The night, Rocky, Superman and Halloween. Olson admitted after Hudson died that he initially helped the actor hide the fact that he had AIDS. But it was through Olson that Hudson eventually disclosed to the public that he had AIDS and helped greatly increase public awareness in the early years of the pandemic. In later years Olson represented the Actors Fund, Professional Dancers Association and the Caucus of Producers, Writers and Directors. In its statement announcing Olson’s death, the Actors Fund said “While we mourn his death, we celebrate his lifetime of dedication.” Olson is survived by his longtime partner Eugene Harbin.

Oh, Dale was a hoot. This is too bad. Rest in Peace, you awesome fella, you…
He always delivered the goods, even if you sometimes had to untangle them. Above all he was the man who (eventually) got Rock Hudson to talk about AIDS and bring it into the national conversation at a time when even the White House was silent.
Dale Olson was a giant in our industry. He gave me an interview and a job in the mailroom at Rogers & Cowan along with Warren Cowan-when that firm was on top of the world…..through the years we have crossed paths and always supportive of each others goals and accomplishments. It was a privilege to have known him. RIP Dale. Edward Lozzi, President Edward Lozzi & Associates Public Relations
Dale was “the man” of publicity. He was a natural. He gave me a helping hand when I brought him my fist client and I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. From there, we formed a 20 year bond and supported each other throughout the years. But Dale was way more than a brilliant publicist – he was one of the most sincere and reliable people I’ve ever met in Hollywood. Thank you, Dale! I’ll never forget you. As I write this, I’m listening to “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and I sincerely hope you’re enjoying that now!
