Helen Gurley Brown, author, publisher and editor-in-chief of Cosmpolitan magazine for 32 years died today. She was 90. Brown’s bestselling book Sex And The Single Girl was published in 1962 and it was during the ’60s that she became an outspoken advocate of women’s sexual freedom, claiming that women could have it all – “love, sex and money”. She became editor-in-chief of Cosmo in 1965, turning around the fortunes of the then-failing magazine, until she was ousted in 1977. In 2008, Brown was named the 13th most powerful American over the age of 80 by Slate magazine. She was married to producer David Brown (Jaws, The Sting, Driving Miss Daisy), for more than 50 years until his death at age 93 in 2010.

She created a whole new forum for women to express themselves sexually without being controlled or exploited by the opposite sex. HGB was a true maverick – RIP.
Wow, talk about a marriage that stood the test of time…
Thanks for the inspiration. Rest in peace.
I had the great privilege of knowing, individually, both Helen Gurly and David Brown. She called me
Miss Frisky and he called me Blondie. They always brought a smile to my face. I am happy they are
now reunited in peace.
To tell you the truth – the marriage of David Brown and Helen Gurley Brown is a great love story. And maybe the subject of a great film.
