Steve Franken, who played the snobby, rich kid Chatsworth on the 1960s TV show The Many Lives Of Dobie Gillis, has died after battling cancer, the New York Times reports. He was 80. His wife says Franken passed away August 24 at home in Los Angeles. In a television and film career that spanned more than 50 years, Franken appeared on numerous TV shows including Bewitched, Love, American Style, The Lieutenant and Seinfeld. Franken was born in Queens in 1932, graduated from Cornell University and began his acting career on the stage in New York City. He nabbed the role of Chatsworth when he went to Los Angeles to appear in José Ferrer’s production of Edwin Booth. Franken’s film credits include The Party, The Fiendish Plot Of Dr. Fu Manchu, Which Way To The Front?, Hardly Working, The Missouri Breaks and The Americanization Of Emily.

In a film that was hilarious from beginning to end, The Party (and it still holds up), he was one of the funniest people in it. Pissingly funny (and you’ll get the joke if you’ve seen it). R.I.P.
I grew up enjoying Mr. Franken on many of my favorite television shows, but for me he will always be fondly remembered for his hilarious and classic performance in “The Party” as the waiter who gets increasing drunker as the festivities progress. One of my favorite comedies of all time and one of my most favorite comedic performances, I watch at least once a year and show it to those who haven’t yet had the pleasure often . I thank him for the many laughs over the years and raise just one more martini as a toast in his memory! R.I.P. Steve Franken and my sincere condolences to your family. Cheers!
I see where Mr. Frankin played on Seinfeld but no one is saying what character or episode that he played. I’m interested to know.
“I improvised up a storm.” This was Mr. Franken’s excited report to a friend just after THE PARTY had wrapped filming. And a perfect storm it was, too. He delivered an unforgettable turn in a classic comedy.
As previously scheduled, THE PARTY will be screened this weekend in a 35mm print at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (www.bam.org) in NYC on Sunday, September 2nd @4:30 PM and @9:15 PM.
THE PARTY star Peter Sellers recruited Mr. Franken for an on-screen reunion 12 years later in THE FIENDISH PLOT OF DR. FU MANCHU, and 3 years after that THE PARTY director Blake Edwards had Mr. Franken play inebriated again in CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER. He could always be counted on to bring the funny when asked.
R.I.P. Mr. Franken.
Chatsworth was a funny bit and this was a funny guy. He had to have been for Blake Edwards to use him so regularly. R.I.P.
Steve Franken was cool as hell in WESTWORLD as the unfortunate Tech with the flat.
He played “Uncle Leo” and what a wonderful role that was!
