3RD UPDATE, WRITETHRU: A source close to the Scott family just confirmed to Deadline that famed movie director and TV producer Tony Scott “has passed away. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.” Hollywood is shocked by this tragic news that he committed suicide because British-born Scott was well-liked personally and professionally and had a lauded and thriving career. “He was the loveliest guy. Genuinely,” a family friend tells Deadline. “He was one of the good ones.” Scott was best known for classic action films like Top Gun, Days Of Thunder, Beverly Hills Cop II, True Romance, and Crimson Tide, and the most recent Unstoppable. He also is a credited producer on this summer’s Fox blockbuster Prometheus directed by his brother Ridley Scott.

According to insiders who’d just spoken to Tony Scott last week, he was busy developing a Top Gun sequel re-teaming with Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer despite a 25-plus-year gap between movies. Paramount confirmed to Deadline tonight that Scott was still attached to direct, and just on Friday Cruise was touring the naval Air Station nearby Fallon, Nevada, as part of prep work. But before that project Scott planned to direct as his next movie the drug-centric action thriller Narco Sub based on a spec script by David Guggenheim for Twentieth Century Fox. Scott also was trying to make Hells Angels, The Movie happen.
Both Scott brothers through their busy LA-based Scott Free Productions also have the A&E miniseries Coma scheduled to premiere on September 3rd, as well as Season 4 of CBS’ The Good Wife.
The LAPD tells Deadline it received a 911 call at 12:35 PM today about a man who jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles County spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island. The body of the man was recovered from the water at
approximately 3 PM by the Los Angeles Port Police. The Coroner’s Office identified the man as Anthony Davis Scott, 68, who resides in Beverly Hills, according to Watch Commander Lt Timothy Nordquist of LAPD Harbour Area division talking to Deadline. Lt. Nordquist also said that Scott “seemed to be alone”. The Coroner’s Office told Deadline Scott’s death is being investigated as a suicide with no indication it was anything but a suicide.
Unconfirmed news reports say officials found a note listing contact information inside his black Toyota Prius parked on an eastbound lane of the cable-suspension bridge, and a suicide note was at his Los Angeles office. News of Scott’s jump to his death was first reported by the local Daily Breeze newspaper. It wrote Scott climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge’s apex and leaped “without hesitation” around 12:30 PM. Earlier today Deadline was alerted that “an older gentlemen who people recognized from either movies and/or TV tried to jump off a pier” and that the attempt was not successful.

That’s sad, RIP.
Without Tony Scott we would not have the blockbusters of today like the Avengers. I remember that before movies like Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop 2, well, before those movies movies were slow/boring in pace and not as glossy. He’s one of the main pioneers who we have to thank for the many blockbusters of today.
Beverly Hills Cop 2 was awesome!!!!!! We saw how talented he was when they came out with Beverly Hills Cop 3 (he did NOT Direct) that and it had a cheap look.
Top Gun was awesome!!!!!! Young one’s today see one roller coaster ride movie come out every month. However, back in the 80′s it was rare.
Rest in peace Tony Scott. You will be immortal forever from your movies.
Forget the blockbusters – it’s “The Hunger” that will live on and grow in esteem (despite the 80′s blowing curtains and nonsensical ending).
Seeing Catherine Deneueve as an aristorcratic bisexual vampiress who goes to new wave clubs for her dinner was a high-gloss, kinky thrill in the early 80′s. Bowie and Sarandon were 80′s NYC coolness personified. Bauhaus performing over the credits. All that smoking! All that Chopin!
Please, never remake it. It’s a bent classic of its time.
Suicide really solves nothing, yet may you live on, Tony Scott. RIP
Yup, he and Ridley have given so much to film-going experiences, and I need them in my life of entertainment. I don’t like how some film makers have taken the route of fast-paced to “mindless”, and “nothing but fast paced”, so I will very much miss Tony because he managed to do the action films with style, and didn’t only focus on something happening every second. He and Ridley know how to change pace for realism, and keep you interested and thrilled. Though both have different styles, both have saved me from the doldrums of copy-cat film making so many others practice. Thank you for everything you gave us Tony.
Such sad news. He brought such joy to my hometown when he was filming Unstoppable in Central PA. So sad. Enjoyed his work, He was such a gift and I will miss his great talent. I was always grateful to him for bringing such joy into my “hometown” community.
Scott and Bruckheimer were two of the geniuses who have entertained millions with exciting movies and TV shows.
We may never know what drove him to commit suicide, but whatever the reason, it is a sad loss for our generation, and those to come…
very sad …..
prayers for his family
Jesus! What the hell??? This is awful! I can only imagine what was so bad…condolences to his family!
I know. He was already 68. What’s another decade? It must have been really bad. Or side-effects from medication. What the hell was he thinking?!
Anyway, all I have to say is True Romance and Crimson Tide, man. Thank you very, very much. Rest in peace, Tony.
Yes, Jack, True Romance and Crimson Tide are classics in my book. He also helped produced some good television.
RIP, Tony.
Truly shocked. A very sad loss.
What?! This is terrible news. Scott was one of my favorite directors. I was really looking forward to Scott returning for Top Gun 2! Awful.
OMG. How sad. Such a nice & talented person. So much to live for… He will definitely be missed. R.I.P.
Oh, crap.
that’s depressing…
This is terrible news. Rest in peace.
Rest in Peace, Tony.
Why? Why would he kill himself? I’m such a huge fan! What a loss!
This is sad.
Talented , Brilliant a truly tragic end– rest quietly Tony. Thoughts are with his family and his brother Ridley and all the Scott Free staff who are all so closes they will be all very shocked and greatly upset.
Absolutely horrifying. I was hoping too goodness that the report was going to be disconfirmed. Blessings to Donna & the kids during this unbelievably horrible time. –{-@
This is so sad. I am at a lost. I feel like I just lost a part of my childhood.
Wow. How sad. Judging from his IMDB page, he had lots of projects in the works well into next year, so it’s not like he was wanting for work. It will be interesting to learn more in the following days. R.I.P.
What the hell? I hope we find out why. Love a lot of his films! RIP
Sad to hear this. No matter how outwardly happy or successful people are, there can be so much turmoil inside. RIP Tony Scott.
Wow. I really hate to hear that. I’m really a big fan of his work. Rest in peace, Tony.
Agreed – I just thought f*** can’t be true. He left, so many great work behind and will be truly missed. RIP – prayers to his family and friends.
RIP brother. You were one of the greats. Revenge, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance… all classics.
This is shocking and very sad news. What could have happened??? So so so sad!
So sad.
WOW. RIP Tony.
How sad. He was a great talent and made such entertaining films. Even his last movie, Unstoppable, was one of his best in years. I wonder if we’ll ever know what caused him to take his own life? How terrible for Ridley. Denzel Washington must be devastated too, they worked together so much.
Terribly saddened to hear this! This biz…smh
