3RD UPDATE, WRITETHRU: A source close to the Scott family just confirmed to Deadline that famed movie director and TV producer Tony Scott “has passed away. We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.” Hollywood is shocked by this tragic news that he committed suicide because British-born Scott was well-liked personally and professionally and had a lauded and thriving career. “He was the loveliest guy. Genuinely,” a family friend tells Deadline. “He was one of the good ones.” Scott was best known for classic action films like Top Gun, Days Of Thunder, Beverly Hills Cop II, True Romance, and Crimson Tide, and the most recent Unstoppable. He also is a credited producer on this summer’s Fox blockbuster Prometheus directed by his brother Ridley Scott.

According to insiders who’d just spoken to Tony Scott last week, he was busy developing a Top Gun sequel re-teaming with Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer despite a 25-plus-year gap between movies. Paramount confirmed to Deadline tonight that Scott was still attached to direct, and just on Friday Cruise was touring the naval Air Station nearby Fallon, Nevada, as part of prep work. But before that project Scott planned to direct as his next movie the drug-centric action thriller Narco Sub based on a spec script by David Guggenheim for Twentieth Century Fox. Scott also was trying to make Hells Angels, The Movie happen.
Both Scott brothers through their busy LA-based Scott Free Productions also have the A&E miniseries Coma scheduled to premiere on September 3rd, as well as Season 4 of CBS’ The Good Wife.
The LAPD tells Deadline it received a 911 call at 12:35 PM today about a man who jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles County spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island. The body of the man was recovered from the water at
approximately 3 PM by the Los Angeles Port Police. The Coroner’s Office identified the man as Anthony Davis Scott, 68, who resides in Beverly Hills, according to Watch Commander Lt Timothy Nordquist of LAPD Harbour Area division talking to Deadline. Lt. Nordquist also said that Scott “seemed to be alone”. The Coroner’s Office told Deadline Scott’s death is being investigated as a suicide with no indication it was anything but a suicide.
Unconfirmed news reports say officials found a note listing contact information inside his black Toyota Prius parked on an eastbound lane of the cable-suspension bridge, and a suicide note was at his Los Angeles office. News of Scott’s jump to his death was first reported by the local Daily Breeze newspaper. It wrote Scott climbed a fence on the south side of the bridge’s apex and leaped “without hesitation” around 12:30 PM. Earlier today Deadline was alerted that “an older gentlemen who people recognized from either movies and/or TV tried to jump off a pier” and that the attempt was not successful.

This is horrible news. I’ve always been such a great admirer of his work. Rest in peace.
So so very sad. I was fortunate to work with him. Such a lovely person. So sad. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Terrible news. I enjoyed working with him. He really was a visual guy. Sad for his family.
Great director. His stuff got BETTER as he got older. “True Romance,” ’nuff said. That experimental phase of “Man on Fire” and “Domino” was the best. Even on corporate autopilot (“Pelham 123,” “Unstoppable”) his stuff was super-watchable. The whole Bruckheimer visual style was based on Scott, even the stuff Scott didn’t actually direct! The look of CSI Miami especially was all Scott. Damn, what a loss of a great creator. Hoping they’ll release details of his note to the public. Condolences to his family and friends.
so true. his visuals were revolutionary.
i can NOT believe waht happened. such a great talent.
spygame, crimson tide and deja vu were my favs.
RIP Tony.
I’m in shock. This is so sad. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones…
RIP Tony, how tragic, what a loss to our industry. He must of had many more great films in him, truly sad.
Does anyone have any insight? What could it have been??
I’m utterly SHOCKED!! When you think you have everything, something creeps in. JEEZ! Bless his family!
Stunned. Sad. Confused. Horrified. Deep and sincere condolences to Tony’s family and extended family.

So saddened, a truly gifted painter of the Film Canvass and one of the good guys in this business. RIP, Tony.
RIP, Mr. Scott. RIP.
Unbelievably sad news. I often wish at times like this that people could have a moment of clarity just before taking their lives that would allow them to see into the future and the effect their actions will have on the people who love and admire them, in hopes it would help them to find the strength to give their loved ones the chance to help them in their time of need and despair. And there are so many who now wish they had been given that chance. Thank you, Tony for the many years of joy and entertainment. May you rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to your family.
So sad… we all feel down at times, I guess… so confused. Why would this happen?
Heartbreaking.
Why? Why-why-why???
WHAT??!!!
Oh my god, NO!!!
What an amazing director. What a devastating loss! That’s just…
I’m sending prayers to the family. Major loss to the art of filmmaking (his was artistry, anyway).
RIP Tony Scott
Thoughts and prayers to his family. I too was looking forward to a part 2 Top Gun one of my very favorite Tom Cruise movies. Anyone who has worked with him is probably saddened at the news & my Thoughts & prayers to them as well.
Words cannot express the shock or numbness I know we all feel right now.
Had the pleasure of sitting next to him at a dinner party some years ago – after growing up as an uber fan – and was impressed by what a funny, witty, bright, charming guy he was, and how lovely Donna is. I’m really beyond words. Condolences to Donna and the kids. Truly sad news.
Speechless. He was an amazing talent with amazing ability to emotionally connect with each person in the audience.
Absolutely heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his family…
I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for guys like him. Thanks Tony for all your talents you will be missed.

This is tragic. Tony was a gentleman and a fantastic commercial director, doing some of the most memorable spots I’ve ever seen. Always very gracious and funny, at least when we dealt with him in post. No doubt despite his success, he had inner demons no one knew about. I hope he found the peace he was looking for.
Rest in peace, friend. God bless.
Rest if peace, sir. You were an inspiration and your films will continue to teach those who follow behind you, the heights visual filmmaking can achieve.
R.I.P. Tony Scott. His unprecedented talent will never be forgotten. I cherish the moments of his cinematic art & style. Condolences to his family during this tragic loss.
