UPDATE THURSDAY 4:55 PM: The CNN camerawoman who was pelted with peanuts by attendees at the GOP Convention in Tampa yesterday has told Journal-isms that she was not surprised by the incident and that it should serve as a wake-up call to black people. “This is Florida, and I’m from the Deep South. You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don’t think I should do,” she said. Two people were removed from the arena yesterday after they threw peanuts at the camera operator, while saying to her, “This is how we feed the animals.”
WEDNESDAY: The Republican Party is responding to an incident yesterday in which two attendees at the GOP’s Tampa convention threw peanuts at a female African-American CNN camera operator and said, “This is how we feed animals”. The RNC released a statement today: “Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated”. Several people reportedly witnessed the exchange which was first tweeted by David Shuster and confirmed by Talking Points Memo (TPM). RNC security and police removed the two people from the Tampa Bay Times Forum. No word yet on their identities. CNN later acknowledged the incident: “CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment”. The convention began its first full session Tuesday after being delayed a day by then-Tropical Storm Isaac. It concludes Thursday night when Mitt Romney accepts the party’s presidential nomination.

Is anyone the least bit surprised by this? Not a fan of the current administration, but the RNC might as well be a white power rally.
Congratulations on making a statement as stupid and offensive as the one directed at that unfortunate camerawoman. Now I am sure there will be many more to follow in this thread that are of just the same substance.
It’s unfortunate for the Republicans, but Mike’s statement above is true, not stupid. To deny something that’s become blatant is pointless and obfuscating. And the truth may be offensive, but it still remains the truth.
if you think that statement is anywhere near as offensive as belittling someone due to their race in public by throwing food at then I think you ma be apart of the problem. False equivalences once again.
Not a false equivalence at all. For example we don’t really know that the camerapersons were being belittled due to their race, more likely is that they were insulted due to being members of the media. Repubs often tend to loathe the media except FOX. Over-the-top racism is much less common in the party than hating the “liberal” press.
Good job on your carefully spun words.
A. camera PERSON. Singular. One. It would be much EASIER to defend if it indeed was a group of people rather than one lone individual, which raises some questions
B. ‘Being members of the media’… then it would seem quite unfortunate that the 2 attendees, of all the media they could have heckled, happened upon the female, black, camera operator.
Give me a break. Even if NOT racially motivated, its still a putrid and sad display. What’s our next excuse? I know, let’s claim they were Democratic moles installed to act like fools to make the GOP convention look bad!
“Unfortunate” cuz she’s black. I don’t think the camerawoman was “unfortunate”. I think you meant to write “innocent”. But who am I to speak for someone who’s standing up for the anti-women, anti-minority RNC.
What is “unfortunate” about the camerawoman??? WTF is that supposed to mean. Don’t you find it highly suspicious that this has all been hushed up? Why don’t we know who did this and if the Rethugs are so sorry what have they done to penalize these vile ******.
What a profoundly stupid statement.
Child points at something: “That’s stupid!” Everyone agrees, yes, that’s a child.
2 ass holes escorted out and excoriated does not make a party, nor is Mitt Romney in any way represented by these two jerks. Every party has jerks, doesn’t make the entire party jerks, and if you think it does, that is the definition of racism, judging an entire group by the actions of one or two or by the actions of generations in the past.
“CNN … will have no further comment”
Seriously? Is this because some rule of journalism prevents them from investigating incidents involving thier own employees? Because had this happened to a random non-employee, I dare say CNN would be all over it. Or maybe not, which might explain their current ranking in TV news outlets… I know not.
Actually, I like CNN’s stance on this one. Journalists should cover the news, not become the news. That’s journalism 101. CNN has failed on many things lately but they got this one right.
Agree with MoreTears. The RNC wasted no time in identifying those creeps and booting their behinds out. And considering how political dirty-tricks work, those two could easily be liberal pro-Obama people trying to smear the convention.
Come on… You are delusional.
“Could easily be”? Do you really think that???
I hate politics for turning seemingly smart people into thoughtless sycophants. The two party system just broken.
I agree with you JB, and I’m black. Something doesn’t smell right about this. Who were these people? They are said to be “attendees”, not delegates, so they could have gotten a pass from anyone. Why hasn’t this been published? And the camerawoman’s statement about FL and the Deep South and people not liking “see us doing things they don’t think I should do” sounds like an attempt to imply the RNC is racist and held a convention where few Black people live. But blacks make up over 25% of Tampa, so….
I smell a rat, like when the Left infiltrated the TEA parties with made up signs.
Keep it classy, Tampa.
My first reaction to reading this was ‘Wow, what a terrible thing to do to a person.’ My second reaction was ‘This does not surprise me coming from a Republican convention.’
Remember in 2008 when that crazy old racist lady got on the mic next to McCain and said Obama was a Muslim and McCain had to shut her down?
Its that same rabid mob mentality that escalates these things to ridiculous levels. Its that same rabid mob mentality that prevents us from having real discussions about issues instead of playing the gaff game. Its that same rabid mob mentality that so gravely endangers the future of our country.
Well said.
Really, folks. Two people behaved very badly. They were thrown out. Republicans don’t like that kind of behavior, either. Do any of you know what happened to Mia Love from Utah. The liberals behaving badly trashed her wikipedia page with horrible racist names. I haven’t heard the first liberal denouce it. But maybe I’m not reading enough liberal papers.
Yes, because defacing a Wiki page is EXACTLY the same thing as assaulting a real live person with food.
Did you even bother to watch the convention? And I mean sit and watch an entire evening’s worth.
I didn’t think so. I’m truly amazed at all these intellectual elites throwing around names, insults and stereotypes so casually here. It’s Pavlovian. Look at yourselves and what you write and believe. Narrow minded, sexist, abusive, juvenile, misinformed, racist-toward Republicans, and generally ignorant hysteria. That’s what I see.
Two people allegedly did something stupid. Therefore everyone in the room is guilty and should be painted with the same brush. That makes a lot of sense. Very American of you. Glad to have this reasonable, rationale discussion.
The difference between the Republican convention and a lynch mob?
A lynch mob is less enthusiastic.
I am not the least bit surprised
Been three days and still no names, no followup on the story. If they were delegates there would have been some word as to who these people were. No blogs, No Politico, No Huffington Post.
Why no follow up?
Politics smolitics, just an opportunity to say my side is better than your side. When will we learn there is no better than or less than, just a better way? My country, party, religion, right or wrong, is just wrong. Repubs and Dems love to hate each other. I think that last statement has a lot wrong with it, “love to hate”. One accuses the other of hating more while they are hating them. Lets call each other names to show how good we are. What insanity.
I’m no fan of the current GOP but they shouldn’t all be blamed for the behavior and views of a few. The RNC did their job and removed those men from the convention and rightfully condemned their actions. As far as I’m concerened, they are not to blame for this.
You would think that if it was a CNN reporter, CNN might run the story.
Are they protecting Mitt Romney now?
No offense, but I think this incident probably had more to do who her employer was than her race. If the GOP was a bunch of racists, one of their key speakers that same evening would not have been Condi Rice, a black woman who grew up in the segregated south. With that said, they should have thrown the people out.
I hope the two peanut pelters’ names are divulged. Like to do a little expose into their lives, their parents’ lives, their spouses, their sexual preferences, their education, their childhood, where they work, their motivation, their favorite brand of peanuts in which to pelt camera operators, their tax returns from the past five years. You know, investigative journalism.
…at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Republicans began to throw punches. In my opinion, CNN and MSNBC should have been barred from convention altogether. MSNBC cut away from all minority speakers on the second night of the convention and its parade of left-wing nut jobs continue to perpetuate the democrat party myth that Republicans are racist. I simply hate CNN and MSNBC along with the other major media outlets for mis-characterizing my political beliefs. They spent the last few years desperately looking for any indication of racism at Tea Party rallies while turning any criticism of President Obama into a racist issue. If that camera person was working for Fox News, you can bet your ass that no peanuts would have been hurled. This is about anger towards left-wing media bias, it’s not about race and the ratings support my belief. I’m gay, but I’d love to knock Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow on their asses. Thank God for the Fox News channel.
Say what you will Republicans at least have the courage of their convictions.
She can’t be that good of a camerawoman if shie didn’t get any video of the guys. It was a setup, I am sure of it.
First of all, racism happens everywhere, not because “This is Florida.” At the Republican convention, yeah, you can expect something like that to happen. After all, for the most part they are appealing to those on the far right, having bashed and scorned any moderate Republicans. After you get rid of wheat you have the chaff. The Republican party is almost entirely chaff. That’s why I don’t see why any black people or women would want to support these yahoos.

As to the comment that she could have been insulted because she was the media, were members of the white media insulted, too?
