This one took awhile, but Sam Claflin has finally been set for the role of Finnick, a key piece of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. He had been the favorite for the last month, but he had a problem with an option owed to another studio that presented date problems. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter star Ben Walker, Boyd Holbrook and Tyler Hoechlin were the other competitors for that role, but Claflin’s schedule cleared and the Snow White And The Huntsman and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides star now has a done deal.
Santa Monica, CA, August 22, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Sam Claflin has been cast in the role of Finnick in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. Charasmatic and clever, Finnick was a District 4 Hunger Games victor when he was fourteen.
After breaking out in his role as the romantic lead in last year’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Claflin starred in the box office smash SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN playing Prince William alongside Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. He recently finished filming THE QUIET ONES opposite Jarred Harris, and MARY & MARTHA, in which he co-stars with Hilary Swank.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone.
Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

This movie is dead to me now. What a monumental casting screw up.
I wouldn’t go that far.
I still can’t wait to see it, but it is definitely bad casting
Dreadful casting for Finnick, they should of used the guy they cast as Gloss for Finnick.
I was mad when the news broke that Gary Ross wouldn’t be coming back and it just got worse. Sam Claflin is NOT Finnick Odair. He’s a short, pasty Brit dandy with thick thighs and questionable acting prowess. Debra Zane’s casting has ruined Catching Fire. You have lost my money.
I know right? Worst casting so far. I would have rather had Robert Pattinson as Finnick. At least he has that rough and hardcore look about himself.
you guys are acting like brats you have not even seen a good time in pirates and snowhite he only got what 1o mins you guys he may have not have the look but think about last year when you did not want Jen to play Katniss or Josh for Peeta and Liam for Gale for me sam claflin is the right finnick why you may be saying he a unknown actors .Liongate would have not cast him if he had something very good i have seen his acting when i used to live in London Give a chance and also if you someone who looks like Finnick and you him to be finnick he just may had really really bad acting sam will do 100% way better than the big name actors yeah sure he may not look like finnick but they can always fix like with Jen ,Josh ,and Liam just give this poor guy a chance you never know you may like him
I honestly don’t agree with the points you’re making. I personally don’t like Sam Claflin for many reasons, one being he is not the right image for Finnick. Not trying to be a brat, but he really does not have the right height, right body structure, or right face. Sure they can put makeup, sure he can bulk up, but I just personally believe there will always be something missing. He won’t be a natural fit, when there were plenty of actors who look the part to begin with. Just because Lionsgate picked him does not make him a good actor, companies make plenty of mistakes on casting. (Kristin Steward for Twilight, anyone?) And you can’t say the whole Jen and Josh thing because that does not go for everyone – I thought those pairings were perfect for the characters. Eh, I guess I’ll see how it goes, but in my opinion a better decision could have been made. With Gary Ross gone, I don’t know how high my hopes can be.
Furious fangirls as far as the eye can see. Tumblr meltdown. Shouldn’t cost them more than $50 million at the box office though. Not everyone cares about Finnick. Pasty Brit wimp Finnick won’t turn off everyone. LG can definitely recover from this faux pas. Spend more on marketing to make up for it. Do able.
Wow what awful casting.
Alan Richson would have been perfect for Finnick, not Gloss
Wrong wrong wrong. Did these producers even read the books? I have zero interest in seeing this movie now.
I am not quite sure yet how this guy keeps getting all these big roles. He must be an excellent(underutilized) actor who has really good representation. I am all about bringing new faces to bigger Studio films (cough*Bullet to The Head*cough) But quite frankly he does not strike me as a movie star.
Perfect choice! LOVE LOVE LOVE! Sam Claflin was worth the wait.
I actually think this is a GREAT choice. Not too well known but also not a complete nobody. Im so glad they went a kind on non traditional way of casting instead of getting some Tv star pretty boy for this role like a Chace Crawford or someone similar. They.ve being pretty spot on with all the casting so far…well .except for Liam Hemsworth who looks way to old to be believable as an 18 yr old Gale.
Ahhh!!! So excited to see Sam Claflin as Finnick! He is perfect for the role!
Hottie alert!!! CAN’T WAIT!
Swoooooon!!!!
Sam Clafin is incredible. I loved him in the screen version of my favorite book: The Pillars of the Earth. Also, HELLLO, he was Kaleb in the Lost Future! Amazing. Great Choice. Gonna see them all.
Great pick for Finnick!
He’s perfect for Finnick. Just give him a tan and a trident and he’ll be AMAZING!
Such a great casting choice.
Its as if casting could care less about physical descriptions in casting this whole series. I understand that how an actor auditions/performs is a major factor but some resemblance to these characters millions of people felt connected to in reading the books would be nice.
Didnoonereadthebook I agree with your comment. It’s that Debra Zane woman who was brought on by Ross and just ruined this what could of been a great movie. It’s a sad day for Hunger Game fans world wide. If anyone at lionsgate reads this please fire that witch Debra Zane asap!!!! Don’t let her ruin Mockingjay! This is worse that the casting Peeta 5 inches shorten than normal and baby huey as Liam.
I don’t like this casting, gimmick was my fab character and I doubt he can pull it off, will see
Finnick…
Terrible choice. They could have done so much better. I know that physical description is not the only factor for casting but this guy is nothing like how I imagined Finnick. The actor should at least be 6 foot tall and look like he can hold his own against Katniss. Unless this guy seriously bulks up and soon he’ll look small compared to Jennifer Lawrence.
He is not Finnick. Sorry. Armie Hummer is Finnick. Everyone pictured Armie when they read the books. Sam is pretty and looks like a nice person. But he is also boring and empty. He was pretty and empty in Pirats. And he was pretty and empty in Snow White. He does not have charisma to play charming Finnick.
And what was wrong with Armie Hammer for Lionsgate? Why wasn’t he auditioned? They cast some no-name as Johanna. And now this? Even actor from Tron would be better.
/Everyone pictured Armie when they read the books./
Speak for yourself, please. I definitely didn’t picture Armie as Finnick.
I definitely could NOT see Armie. I didn’t see Sam either, but that isn’t the point. Just saying, don’t make statements you don’t know. Finnick is supposed to be super bulky and tall, which um, Armie apparently is not…
WTF is this casting? FAIL.
Love it!!! he’s a rockstar
Perfect. Pretty much how I imagined Finnick and he is a good actor so, yeah, great choice.
he has no charismatic quality whatsoever. just bland. like that peeta guy.
though i’m actually curious to see jena – remember donnie darko?
i’m not saying the movie is dead. but not encouraging. francis can bring some visual satisfaction but lacks other
I think Sam has finnicks eyes. And the way sam’s hair is kinda wavy reminds me of Finnick. And I always picture Finnick with a nice jaw like SAMs. But I do agree sams body structure is not Finnick.
