Doctor Who fans on both sides of the Atlantic will get their time travel fix when the new season debuts on Sept 1. But fans of Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat’s other show, Sherlock, will have to wait another year. The show is expected to return for fall 2013, it came out during a masterclass at the Edinburgh TV festival today. Shooting starts in January and delivery is being eyed for August. Moffat was there with his co-creator Mark Gatiss (who also plays big brother to the titular high-functioning sociopath), producer Sue Vertue and actor Andrew Scott, aka “consulting criminal” James Moriarty. Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, recently had to pull out of the appearance. Ahead of the panel, Moffat teased via Twitter: “Last year it was Woman, Hound, Fall. This year’s three words revealed tomorrow at #MGEITF #Sherlock Master Class.” Making good on his promise, he said the three words for the 3rd season will be: Rat, Wedding, Bow. That could mean the Arthur Conan Doyle source material used for the episodes will be The Giant Rat Of Sumatra, The Noble Bachelor and His Last Bow, which, if correct would point to season three being the show’s last. Given Cumberbatch’s increasingly busy schedule that seems elementary. In other news from the panel, Moffat was asked about the new CBS series Elementary, which also revolves around a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, but he refused to discuss it. “We’ve said all we’re going to say about it.” That show debuts Sept 27 in the U.S. and will begin airing in the UK on Sky sometime in the fall. Finally, Scott would not say whether he will be back for season three, though he did intone, “Moriarty is dead.”

Love how they finally said the word “aspergers” in describing Sherlock in S2.
Yes, I agree. It’s much more likely than him being a “high functioning sociopath” (I think that’s what Sherlock said about himself). I have never enjoyed a Sherlock presentation more than this one…brilliance all around. Hope they give us many more episodes!
I wouldn’t be too sure it’s the last. Cumberbatch himself said that it was interesting starting with them both so young, and thought it would be equally interesting aging with them over the years; and, at only three episodes a year, they should still be able to fit it in their schedules. Besides, as long as they’re doing well, who in their right minds would give up such parts?

It points to nothing of the sort. “His Last Bow” refers to one of the Sherlock Holmes stories Doyle wrote (a spy story told in the third person) and in turn became the title of one of the short story collections. It wasn’t the last story Doyle wrote about Holmes (that was “The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place”) nor was it the last collection of Holmes stories (that was ‘The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes’).
Cumberbatch and Freeman’s careers are beginning to take off in a major way. What’s also true is that scripts of the quality of SHERLOCK are rare no matter what stage of a career an actor is in. On the strength of that alone I’d say we have a few more seasons of the show to look forward to.
Oh, and the word “wedding” might not refer to “The Noble Bachelor.” It seems more likely it refers to ‘The Sign of Four’ –during the course of the investigation Watson falls in love with their client Mary Morstan and they marry.
The rat clue more likely refers to “The Shoscombe Valley Mystery” where one of the key clues to solving the mystery is “rat.”
admit it – we all just love the name “Benedict Cumberbatch” and you look for any excuse to say or print it!
As Moffat has noted, “Benedict Cumberbatch” is one of the few names even more absurd than “Sherlock Holmes”.
I agree with you. I love saying Benedict Cumberbatch and writing it. I can’t wait for Star Trek this year.
By the way, The Giant Rat of Sumatra is not a story ever written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was mentioned briefly in “The Sussex Vampire” but was never a story on its own. Many people are incorrectly attributing that story to ACD when in fact it was merely a theme many other authors picked up on later and wrote their own stories about.
Moffat has said these three words, yes, but he’s also said that Series 3 episode 1 is going to be based off of The Adventure of the Empty House.
Just so y’all know.
I don’t know, really, what those words could be referring to. Unfortunately, I haven’t read much of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series.

The author’s works are legally available for free online i.e. in the public domain. I downloaded one or two SH collections from Amazon and had read a few stories before my old laptop crashed – need to get around to reacquiring and finishing the rest now…
For the hope of the entire Sherlock fandom lets hope it’s John’s and Sherlock’s wedding!
I disagree. It is entirely out of Sherlock’s character to marry anyone. He does not think that way. The closest he’s come to love is with Irene. I am speaking as a fan of the books first and this show second.
The closest Sherlock ever came to romantic love was Irene Adler, yes. But I think Sherlock loved Watson (platonically) very much.
Yes! I know that’s totally what I hope!
All I know is that I stumbled upon these shows a couple of years ago by accident. All through last Fall, then this spring and finally I thought this Fall perhaps. Now I hear it will be another year to wait. The stories in my head are pretty good, but whoever wrote and directed these has a much better imagination than I have. Please don’t force us to wait another whole year. These stories are so good that I BEG you for more.
P.S. thinking about Lucy Lu as Watson turns my stomach inside out. Brapbrapbrap, as Nigel Bruce would always say when flustered. I like Lucy , HubbaHubba and all, but not enough to watch her Butcher the role of the good Doctor. The Holliwierdo’s have gone too far with their PC ‘ness this time.
Next it’ll be Conan the Barbarian who will…, Huh…, WHAT? Queen of the what? Oh Never Mind…
Please let Benedict star the next Sherlock season. There’s just no actor that can play the role better than him. He is simply natural. I love him for that.
I can’t wait for the new season!!! I hope they all work hard, it’s just so exciting!!
i cant wait now knowing that there will be 3 new episodes to look forward to– i just love this version of Sherlock. I know that the stars are verey busy but please ,please consider us ,the fans who trully appreciate if you set time aside each year to make these wonderfully acted ,played stories —thankyou -im a 70 year old fan whose children and grandchildren have recorded and replay Cumberbatchs Sherlock ====and again thankyou for the great entertainnment it gives with its very talented cast and wondeful shows
I LOVE this show!!!!!!
As a lifelong Holmes admirer, I count myself so lucky to have enjoyed Jeremy Brett’s Holmes and now Cumberbatch’s Holmes. Honestly, I didn’t think a modern-day Holmes would really work, but the brilliance and imagination of the writing – combined with clever references to the original stories – makes this an intriguing series.
Is Moriarty really dead? If so (and, even though I have my doubts, I tend to think he is), that may be the biggest challenge for the new series: What arch-villain could possibly take the place of Scott’s superb portrayal of an evil mastermind?
Incidentally, why assume that “The Empty Hearse” is Holmes’?
