BREAKING: Sony Pictures is moving its Roland Emmerich-directed White House Down from November 1, 2013 to June 28, 2013. Sony has put its film right in the heat of the summer, and clearly the studio is trying to get ahead of Olympus Has Fallen, the Antoine Fuqua-directed thriller that Millennium Films has already in production. That film doesn’t have a date yet. Both films have been described as Die Hard in the White House. White House Down stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, while Olympus Has Fallen stars Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart. The last time two distributors went at it with similarly themed projects that switched release dates was Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman and Relativity’s Mirror Mirror. Nobody wants to be second, but in that case, Huntsman came later and fared better at the box office.

Um…Die Hard in the White House. Because?
Because “Die Hard on Air Force One” worked out well.
If there’s a good guy with a gun and some bad guys with guns and if they’re all doing things in some kind of structure, then it’s clearly a variation on DIE HARD. Naturally! Stop asking so many pesky questions. You’ll give studio execs a headache.
OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN is the better screenplay, director, more believable cast… if all was fair, it’d be the SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN of these two films box-office-wise.
Have You Read The Other Screen Play? People Who have read white house down said it was fun and entertaining. Even If it is a better Script, How Much You Wanna Bet White House Down Will Make More Money Than Olympus has Fallen?
Channing Tatum and Jamie Fox vs Gerald Butler and Aaron Eckhart? White House down has the young demographic Look Down.
Who would have the better trailer?
WHD was a terrible script, absolutely awful. It’s obvious Sony is banking on the marquee names and not the script nor director, because OHF hands down, in both respects, is far superior.
WRONG. WHD will cream OHF. It’s gonna be more action and more laughs. A lot of great colorful characters that i’m sure they will fill with names that will fit right in there in this action/comedy genre. Sorry but OHF cast seems extremely, i don’t know, boring? Just my opinion.
That’s not what I heard from screenrant or other media outlets who read White house Down but hey whatever.
Die Hard in the White House isn’t that great of a concept to begin with (especially when we already had Air Force One), yet there’s three of them in production?! White House Down, Olympus Has Fallen, and Jupiter Ascending.
One has A-listers, the other direct-to-video players. It doesn’t take a slide rule to figure out which one of these is going to make bank.
Mark,
Because it’ll make a ton of $$. Are you seriously asking that question?
WHD is beyond bad. Sony must know this & will blame it on ‘a crowded summer market’… The script is beyond ridiculous.
Olympus will smartly pull ahead in March & clean up all hunger for this type of box office action.
3 million dollar on script that is bad? They are not that stupid.
I read the Olympus screenplay and thought it was one of the worst screenplays I’d read in years. North Koreans? How tired can you get. WHD was the more commercial, fun, and popcorn version of the concept, with a far better writer and director, and cast. 4th of July is obviously the perfect date for the film. Hope it’s like Independence Day. If so, will be huge.
White House Down has a WAY better cast! The script IS fun and entertaining and will kill it at the box office. So happy they moved it to 4th of July weekend!! Been waiting for a fun ride like this.
Roland is not a better director than Antoine.
I can already tell you WHD will totally cream Olympus. I can say this without even having read either script the same way all movie goers will decide.
1) The cast of WHD is better with action and laughs.
2) The title WHD is more audience appealing than Olympus. Olympus sounds like all those titan movies.
Change the name Olympus to anything else if you want movie goers to see it.
Tatum’s on a roll this year, and Fox has Django upcoming – Sony has a much easier sell than Millennium.
Olympus Has Fallen is a superb cast also has Morgan Freeman and Angela Bassett and Antoine is a far mire interesting filmmaker.
The script was rewritten by the writer if The Messenger
Are u kidding me Antoine Fuqua? Name one good big movie he’s done with special effects? Wait…name one good movie he’s done.. Yup, that’s why he’s working for Avi Lerner and not studios anymore.
Antoine had 1 good movie. Even that was flawed. Probably the most overrated director working. This is why the studios keep him on a short leash. He is not worth putting up with and that’s why they stopped working with him. Hopefully doing b movies will humble him.
Olympus Has Fallen takes place on July 4th in the script. I’d be surprised if they didn’t try to release it around that time as well.
I don’t get why everyone is fighting to claim which one is better. How can you judge a movie you haven’t seen? And a good script is not enough to make a good movie, it’s also depends on execution and casting. I don’t care who is in or who is the director, I juste want to watch some good action movie.
Finally, someone with a sense of reason. Both films have their merits and instead of arguing, why not just wish them both success? I think WHD will be a big, PG 13, event film, while OHF will be a pure action, R rated, Die Hard-type film. My bet is WHD has a larger boxoffice but that’s not to say OHF won’t make a killing.
I think I’ll just rewatch “24″ – spoiler alert, Jack Bauer already saved the White House!
Ask studio production managemt, product placement agencies, talent agencies , marketing and development execs how to judge a film before it is released…. Oh Presales guys r into that too I hear . But yes, at end of day it’s about a good movie
Memo to Antoine: when your agent calls and tells you that you got a gig directing an Avi Lerner movie about a secret service agent protecting the President, and that as a special added bonus, you’re shooting in the middle of the summer in Shreveport, it’s really not a time to celebrate like it’s 1999. It’s more like the clusterfuck of all wake-up calls, a last chance to get real and authentic, a time to go back and try to realize the tremendous potential and promise that you once showed. You should be doing what you do best….Find a good script, a script that tells some amazing story, and become the Antoine that everybody thought would win an Oscar someday.
Nothing against Avi who has awesome Laker seats and employs a lot of people and at least tells the truth about not reading scripts, but you know the drill—first you do an Avi movie, then a pilot for USA because TV is cool now, and then 18 months later, you find yourself at some fleabag on Cahuenga, hoping and praying that you saved enough for one last eight ball, and celebrating that the last informercial you did for Oreck puts you over the top for DGA health benefits….
Olympus will definately fair better than WHD no doubt about it. Plus they’re using Arri Film stock which looks far better than digitally shot. It’s a war film so it will probably be a hard R, also a + .. and to all the crazy, sex driven Gerard Butler fans, him and Radha Mitchell have a very explicit scene in this movie# definately gets my vote
