EXCLUSIVE: Don Mischer will get to produce a TV special starring Eddie Murphy after all. Mischer, who produced this year’s Academy Awards that had Murphy attached as host early on, will executive produce a televised tribute to the comedy actor, which will air on Spike TV. Titled Eddie Murphy: One Night Only, the event will tape on Saturday, November 3 at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles for a broadcast on Nov. 16 on Spike TV. The special will mark 30 years since the release of Murphy’s famous stand-up special Delirious! and the film 48 Hrs., which made him a movie star.
It will highlight Murphy’s career from a 15-year-old aspiring comedian to a Saturday Night Live breakout and a comedy feature superstar and will feature Murphy’s co-stars from many of his films including 48 Hrs., Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming To America, The Nutty Professor, Shrek, and Dreamgirls. The two-hour show will include short films, musical performances and sketch comedy, culminating in an appearance by Murphy. “Eddie’s impact on comedy is immeasurable,” said Casey Patterson, EVP of Event Production for Viacom Media Networks Entertainment Group. “At 19, he changed the face of sketch comedy forever on Saturday Night Live and within four years released 48 Hrs., Delirious, and Beverly Hills Cop, making him one of the biggest stand-up and movie stars in the world, and he’s never stopped evolving, innovating and entertaining.”
Don Mischer Prods. is producing the special, with Mischer, Casey Patterson, Charlie Haykel, and Vernon Lynch (Hollywood Exes) executive producing and Juliane Hare producing.

This is an exact rip off of the American Cinematheque’s annual Tribute which they have done since 1986 when, ironically, Eddie Murphy was the first ever recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. Odd how this cones on the heels of Spike ending its AFI tribute deal.
Many, many owe much to Eddie. Especially me.
Had Eddie not given Keenan Wayans his idea for the indie comedy I’M GOING TO GIT U SUCKA, there
would never had been IN LIVING COLOR.
Essentially Eddie deserves much credit for helping create IN LIVING COLOR.
Eddie put on the Wayans, Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle and many others. The one thing people should always know about Eddie is that he is a true fan of comedy and looked out for people coming up.
Thought he was GREAT in Dreamgirls. He got robbed at the Oscars.
My Favorite Comedian of ALL-TIME!
Lorne Michaels should be the first person at this event for saving that over-glorified sketch comedy show form being cancel decades ago.
Eddie is inarguably a legend. There’s no actor on the planet with even close to the star wattage Eddie possessed in his prime. We’d have a much healthier business if there was. But unfortunately they don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
Actually, the Cinematheque show was the exact rip off of the AFI life film tribute show that started in 1973. And pretty much any show tributing (word?) one person these days will be the poor cousin to those AFI shows, which IMDB says these producers (Misher) worked on. So – yes – Anthony Van Cromphant – “odd” indeed. Pretty lame of Spike if you think about it.
Actually, wasnt it Nov ’83 that Delirious came out? I do recall that, because once I saw that special, I realized that this would be the BEST IN CONCERT comedy special HBO would ever produce again, and it was! Eddie would have been the greatest stand-up of all time if he stayed in that arena, and even though hes starred in many memorable roles, his first love was the comedy stage.
Coming to America remains one of the best comedy films of all time. I watch and quote it frequently.
COMING TO AMERICA BY EDDIE IS EVERGREEN.IT GOES BEYOND COMEDY,TEACHES HUMILITY,ADVENTURE etc.
