SATURDAY AM UPDATE: What a crazy Friday. First came that morning’s bomb scare phoned into the Carmike Cinema chain. Then a consulting firm Screen
Engine poll finds 17% of filmgoers are still reluctant to head to theaters, only slightly better than the 21% recorded four weeks ago right after the Aurora movie theater shooting. (The surveys found that teenagers, particularly females, were most reluctant to go to the movie now.) At least there’s no more Olympics. But post-10 PM screenings were still weak after I first reported the phenom last weekend. The result is that domestic box office grosses were all over the place. Matinee trends and early evening numbers were no longer a reliable predictor of Friday outcomes. When I saw weekend estimates swing from up to down nearly $10M in just a few hours, I waited for clarity which never came. So last night’s numbers had to be revised downward this morning. There are unusually good CinemaScores for the newcomers which will help word-of-mouth: Millenium/Lionsgate’s #1 film The Expendables 2 snags ‘A-’ from audiences and better scoring reviews but still can’t beat the original’s $13.3M Friday/$34.8M weekend opening. Sony/TriStar’s #3 Sparkle gets an ‘A’, and Focus Features’ #4 Paranorman in 3D scores ‘B+’. Add in strong holdovers The Bourne Legacy from Universal in #2 place and The Campaign from Warner Bros in #5 (both had very acceptable drops from last weekend), and it’s a crowded but good $125M weekend – +5% from last year.

Just saw Sparkle and Expendables 2. Loved them both. Sparkle had great actor chemistry, singing and costumes. Team Akil/Chase Martin did a surprisingly good job reworking the original movie to accommodate the new audience. Seeing Whitney and hearing her sing was bittersweet. But,Jordan Sparks stole the show. As for the Expendables 2. Van Damme (sp?) is still hot! Loved all the cameos. It’s a fun movie. Everything doesn’t have to be serious all the time.

You could not pay me enough to go see Sparkles… sorry…
HelenofPeel,
It’s called Sparkle not “Sparkles”, and what’s your problem with it? It’s a movie about a young singing group trying to succeed. Hardly offensive. So why the kneejerk hostility? Should I guess?
I suspect the novelty of the Expendables wore off a bit, since a lot of people already went to the first movie to see Stallone, Arnold, and Bruce onscreen together.
It should have a good run throughout August and September though- especially with that Cinemascore. There won’t be any more action films released until Resident Evil and Dredd next month.
EX 2 works on the better action level because Simon West directed it instead of Stallone…who CANNOT direct his way out of anything.
EX 1 worked, because Stallone jammed all these so called ICONS into one less than 2 hr. movie…lotsa explosions, blood and guts and bullets. It made more overseas than domestic just like EX 2 will.
That’s it folks. Don’t read anymore into the EXPENDABLES at all.
Will not stand the test of time like great action movies do.
Won’t even go into the dialogue.
The Summer was awful for films. Nothing but garbage.
I do think the shooting in Aurora and the copycats phoning in threats has dampened people’s mood to go to the theatre for late night screenings.
I hope it doesn’t last. But there are a LOT of sick and twisted people out there.
Well deserved for Expendables 2, it was a fun befitting end to the summer. Pure popcorn fluff but exactly what we needed right now. Saw Paranorman Thursday midnight and it too was highly enjoyable with great 3d and for those with Passive 3d televisions at home it comes with a set of collector glasses at RealD 3d theaters nationwide
