BURBANK, CA, August 6, 2012 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures have moved the release date of “The Great Gatsby” to Summer 2013. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.”
Kwan Vandenberg confirmed, “Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected—making it in 3D—while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time. The responses we’ve had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think ‘The Great Gatsby’ will be the perfect summer movie around the world.”From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker has created his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.

So, um…re-shoots in February, then?
Just hope this isn’t because ‘Man of Steel’ is weak…
too much competition and a shi**y looking trailer…guess no oscar noms there…WB trying to save it from being a huge bomb
Wow. I thought for sure this was gonna contend for the Oscars this year.
Same here! I’m really looking forward to it.
December does have the largest audience possible. The top 2 films of all time are on there. Anyway, thy should move Clint Eastwood’s next film to December.
If that’s what you call a “shitty looking trailer,” you sir, need everything replaced.
“We decided this movie is not good enough to get us an Oscar.”
Wow. What idiots are running these studios these days. If WB honestly thinks that kids in summertime are going to care about seeing this movie, they are wrong. They will be seeing Man of Steel, Fast 6, Hangover 3, Iron Man 3, and Star Trek 2. Not this. This is a holiday prestige film through and through. I understand not wanting to open two Leo films on the same day, but do what they did in 2002 and bump one film back or up a week. Or better yet open Gatsby in NY and LA at Christmas and wide in January. Watch, not only will this movie not perform in Summer, it will also be forgotten by Oscar season. Another dumb move with release dates, studio heads. Well done.
I am assuming they have seen the film… and that’s why they are moving it into some sort of counter-programming slot. It would seem the film is not worthy of an Awards season release.
I thought the trailer looked pretty good. Looks like the costumes- sets & cinematography would be Oscar nominees
Trailer made the film look expensive and horrible. Pushing it to Summer must mean reshoots and very, very little optimism.
guess they decided not to kill off Channing Tatum
LOL!
Ouch. Must be awful. You don’t give up a prime Christmas Day slot and Oscar chances unless you are holding a steaming turd. That kinda sucks. Was looking forward to this one.
When was the film originally supposed to be released?
dec. 25 2012
Wow. Can it really be that bad? December is the only release for this glitzy bon-bon. Summer is tantamount to direct-to-video.
DiCaprio is not a good actor. I don’t care what anyone says. They already made a great gatsby movie with the Brad Pitt of his day Robert Redford. And it sucked.
When will people realize that great source material usually equals a shitty movie. Everything that went into making the Great Gatsby a great book might just be too hard to condense into a 2-hour movie. It’s way better to take a shitty piece of source material and upgrade it than it is to take a piece of great material and turn it into a formulaic piece of crap.
I’m sure it has quite a bit to do with Django Unchained’s Christmas release. Why split the Leo fan base between his two massive performances if you don’t have to?
Exactly!
And considering Baz Luhrmann is a hit ‘n miss director, and Australia was one of the worst epics ever, this is probably a stinker too…
Can’t wait to see this go to August and get beat by some lame teen slasher film…
If it was worth anything, then this would have kicked off the Spring instead…
The world remembers moulin rouge and australia, two artistic, critical, and financial bombs. Style does not win over substance. This will be a major flop.
I can understand you calling Australia a flop, but Moulin Rouge grossed almost 200 million dollars worldwide and was nominated for EIGHT Oscars, including Best Picture. Not a flop either financially or critical. Even less artistically, considering it WON the Oscars for Art Direction and Costume.
Trailer makes the movie look long & boring….you don’t move a movie that is clearly ‘finished’ 5 months before its to open that is any good…everybody knows that…it must really suck!
Gatsby with be another Baz Luhrmann film. It will be beautiful…long…and, for the most part, boring.
The move to summer does not bode well.
Makes sense to hold off on it — considering Leo would be going up against himself for the Academy Award, which he will likely win for DJANGO UNCHAINED.
Considering he is the lead in one film and a supporting actor in the other, I’m not sure he would be up against himself for an Oscar. That’s assuming his performance in either of those films is even up to par for a nomination.
Not really. Gatsy: leading. Django: supporting.
Hmm. . .I am sensing re-shoots. Not a good look for the great Gatsby! Not to mention, it is not a film needing to be redone. At this time in our economic history, it just might be the perfect film to sequel with affluent offspring in 2012. But not a remake! O’ Hollywood – so original.
I wonder if Warners will bring Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity back for 2012 and put it in the now-open Gatsby spot?
July 31st, great counter programming to everything else. Gets a traditional opening weekend versus the frenzy that would’ve been Christmas Day.
• Grown Ups 2 (Sony) – 7/12
• Pacific Rim (WB) – 7/12
• Jurassic Park (3D) (Uni.) – 7/19
• Turbo (P/DW) – 7/19
• Phineas and Ferb (BV) – 7/26
• The Wolverine (Fox) – 7/26
• The Smurfs 2 (Sony) – 7/31
THE GREAT GATSBY (WB) – 7/31
• Red 2 (Sum.) – 8/2
• Untitled ’300′ Sequel (WB) – 8/2
another flop for baz
BS. “Titanic: and “Avatar’ were released in December. They are the top money earners of all time. SOunds like “Gatsby” is in trouble. Let’s not forget that the directors last film “Australia” was a remedy for insomnia
I’m an American Literature teacher, and I showed the trailer in class after reading the book and my kids were stoked. I wouldn’t be so sure the “kids” won’t go see it. Almost all high school kids have to read Gatsby at some point, and generally love it. We too often underestimate high school students. When J.D. Salinger died, I got emails from tons of past students wondering if I thought there would finally be a Catcher in the Rye movie. I think most students love Gatsby and think it’s the best thing they read in high school (that or Catcher), so don’t be surprised if they come out to see it in the summer.
Well, it is in 3D so I guess that should attract some of the summer crowd, although I can’t imagine too many kids wanting to see this during the holidays; too much like English class.
Luhrmann is the king of style over substance, so I don’t know quite what Warners was expecting from him? A literal translation of the book? Hardly Baz’s thing.
