UPDATE, 1:42 PM: With Wednesday’s final numbers in, the XXX Summer Olympics (17.9/30) continue their dominance of television and past Games. NBC’s Wednesday 8-11:26 PM primetime coverage had more viewers than any other non-U.S. Summer Games since 1976. The London Games pulled in 30.8 million total viewers, up on the 27.7 million that watched the first Wednesday of the 2008 Beijing Games and 2.4 million more than the 28.4 million who watched the first Wednesday of the 2004 Athens Games. The first six-night average of the London Games is 19.3/32, which is also the highest for any non-U.S. Summer Games since Montreal in ’76. That six-night average is 10% higher than it was for the Beijing Games and 23% higher than it was for Athens.
PREVIOUSLY, 9:17 AM: Wednesday’s XXX Summer Olympics (9.7/28) had more competition between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, volleyball and Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins becoming the UK’s most decorated Olympian with seven medals. In fast nationals, NBC’s coverage from London was up 3% from the first Wednesday of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 8-11 PM slot. That number will change when the final numbers come in later this afternoon. Over the six nights, including the July 27 Opening Ceremony, of the London Olympics, the 2012 Games are beating the 2008 Beijing Games by 7% among Adults 18-40 and by 13& in terms of overall viewers. With numbers like that, NBC easily won Wednesday night among Adults 18-49 and with total viewers, pulling in an audience of 30.56 million. At 8 PM CBS’s Big Brother (1.9/6) was down 5%, equaling its lowest rating on any night the reality series is shown this summer. In a night of repeats everywhere else, ABC had a new Final Witness (0.8/2) at 10 PM. Witness was down 20% from last week. Otherwise ABC ran encores of The Middle (0.8/3), Suburgatory (0.7/2) and duel episodes of Modern Family at 9 PM (0.9/3) and 9:30 PM (1.0/3). Fox had a two-hour So You Think You Can Dance (0.7/2) repeat and CBS filled out its night with repeats of Criminal Minds (1.1/3) and CSI (0.8/2).

The only decent looking new shows on NBC are Chicago Fire and Revolution. Revolution looks very Hunger Games which is a good idea.
The twitter lead in to this article seems to be reiterating NBC’s earlier statement that critics of the games are a loud minority.
When NBC is the only network in the country that airs the games during primetime, the ratings aren’t indicative of whether or not viewers actually LIKE the coverage or not — it’s the only coverage they can get if they can’t access the livestream online.
So yes, #NBCFail still stands despite the numbers.
i heard that!! and i’m on the same page! #nbccoverageiswhack
Stupid NBC. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Maybe now they’ll listen to Hollywood’s unemployed masses and start airing events LIVE at 5am.
No, wait. Best ratings since 1976?
Never mind …
How about us working stiffs who have to get up at 5am or earlier and look forward to watching the games live on weekends?
Don’t confuse live of the Olympics with love of NBC’s poorly executed, fake reality tv coverage.
Chalk it up to a great U.S. team, a captive audience with no other choice if they want to see the games, a bad economy / need for escape, and a country most would like to visit holding the event.
why are we watching teams from other countries play and we have not see the womens soccer team play, you show Japan, France, but no U.S. soccer team, NBC this is by far the worst coverage of the olympics. why did tennis gets full coverage, but yet another U.S. person didn’t get any air time, until she won the gold in shooting, but wait it’s her 5th gold she was shooting for. But table tennis, Tennis, and other non-USA team get better coverage. Judo gets 3 seconds after the USA wins.
I think Andrea Kreamers questions to some of the u.s. Olympians were stupid and out of charactor..She sucks…GO HOME Andrea find another job…….
1. Highest ratings in 36 of Olympics — is that national or international? Many watching in China and India. How many of those had the sound off most of the time like we did?
2. Way too much talkover during the games and ceremonies. We watched with the sound off often. If the commentators had been sitting next to us at events I would have pled with them to be quieter or move away.
3. Too lopsided coverage of U.S.A. medalists and scant coverage of China and other country gold medalists. They have stories to tell too!
4. It is GREEDY of NBC to hold a monopoly on the games, I would prefer a competitive network to have coverage and maybe they would not be clotted with gab and ads.
5. NBC tended to show the gymnastics late at night, so we missed seeing a lot of gymnastics. Boooo!
6. I dearly hope sportsmanship returns in vogue; only sparsely shown a Scandinavian or Japanese assisting or congratulating an opponent.
Since when is the American flag “Just a piece of cloth”? (referring to when the U.S. flag fell during tennis gold medal honors and commentators comments)
