UPDATE, 12:45 PM: With Thursday’s final numbers in, the XXX Summer Olympics (21.1/36) continue their dominance of television and past Games. NBC’s Thursday 8 PM-midnight primetime coverage was the most-watched first Thursday of any non-U.S. Summer Games since 1976. The London Games pulled in 36.8 million total viewers, up on the 29.7 million that watched the first Thursday of the 2008 Beijing Games and 5.1 million more than the 31.7 million who watched the first Thursday of the 2004 Athens Games. The first seven-night average of the London Games is 19.5/33, which is the highest for any non-U.S. Summer Games since Montreal in ’76. That seven-night average is 10% higher than it was for the Beijing Games and 20% higher than it was for Athens.
PREVIOUS: Thursday was another big night at the XXX Summer Olympics (11.2/32) especially for Michael Phelps and Gabby Douglas. The most decorated Olympian took his medal count up to 20 with a win in the 200-meter individual medley and the gymnast became the first American to win gold in both the women’s individual all-round competition and the team competition. It was also another win for NBC’s Olympic coverage. In fast nationals, last night’s 8-11 PM coverage was up 8% from the first Thursday of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Thursday was also the second best night the Olympic has had, beating the July 27 Opening Ceremony and coming silver to the final overnights of July 31st. Over the first seven nights, the 2012 London Games are up 7% among Adults 18-49 over the 2008 Beijing Games and 14% in total viewers. Over the first seven nights of the London Olympics, the highest-rated U.S. time zone has continued to be the Mountain Time Zone, followed by the Pacific, then Central and the Eastern. NBC won the night among Adults 18-49 and in total viewership with 35.697 million watching.
Other than Olympics, it was pretty much a night of repeats. However, CBS had a new live Big Brother (1.9/5) at 9 PM. The reality show was down again, 14% from last week and tied for an overall season low. ABC also had a new Wipeout (1.3/4) in the same time slot, which was down a whopping 41% from last week for a series low Earlier in the night CBS had encores of The Big Bang Theory (1.4/5) and Two And A Half Men (1.4/4), with a Person Of Interest (0.8/2) at 10 PM. ABC bookend its new Wipeout with a Wipeout (1.0/3) repeat at 8 PM and a repeat Rookie Blue (0.6/2) at 10 PM. Fox had all repeats with a Raising Hope at 8 PM (0.7/2) and 8:30 P (0.6/2), followed by Glee (0.5/1) at 9 PM.

“Big Brother” has really been getting better in the last few episodes. This season has finally started to gel. Loved that they’re putting the coaches into the game now, since they’re far and away the most interesting/funniest characters in the house this season. There were a couple of unfortunate casting choices, but it’s still the best (and most underrated) competition show on TV.
Next summer, I think they should go for a full All-Stars season. The best of the best is always the most fun to watch.
Keep up the good work.
So glad BB ratings are down. Last nights show was a jump the shark moment with the hugest producer manipulation by Grodner & Co than anything Ive ever seen. BB fans are irate if you look at the blogs. Then followed by yet another challenge that is the same as they do every year. And they voided the HOH week, saved their fave Frank, let coaches who have had immunity for weeks get into the game…ugh ugh ugh ugh…and even clued in the coaches in the diary room that they were going to go in the game
I totally disagree. I thought last night’s episode was great. I was rooting for this to happen all season.
I hate Frank though. No idea why the producers like that guy so much — he’s boring and instantly forgettable. Feel the same way about pretty boy Shane. Will was just plain bad casting.
But I’m loving this new direction from last night.
As a BB fan, I must say I’m disappointed in this season. The new players are NOT interesting at all. And while we knew that Grodner was going to allow the coaches to play the game at some point (since they had so few players), it’s incredibly frustrating that they unfairly decided to void this week’s Head of Household and let Frank continue to play. Talk about blatant manipulation.
If BB keeps recycling the same All-Star players, how will they ever develop NEW BB players that fans like. We’ve had enough of “Chilltown” and their lame schtick. No more Boogie or Dr. Will.
These ratings might end up helping NBC launch their new dramas. Both Revolution and Chicago Fire look great.
Just a thought, is there any data about how many people saw “XXX Olympics” on their TV guide, switched to the channel, then just kept watching? I imagine someone somewhere was disappointed.
Agree w/ the majority of the blogs re: Big Brother. Grodner and Co. are probably the least creative producers on a reality show. When they ignore the open casting calls and picktheir contestants via Facebook and from a pool of other reality show rejects you can’t expect much from the cast. Add to this the often recycled competitions and the diary room tipping coaches about entering the game (and to have even went so far as to allegedly negotiate a contestant having their daughter in sequester) you know those in charge have dropped the ball yet again. We currently have one of the least captivating casts in BB history and it has been a continued downward spiral since Grodner was handed the reins.
Ratings and ad money trumps content and ethics any day on network tv. NBC has the ratings but the customer satisfaction for their brand sucks.
No matter how much we continue to debate NBC placing the key Olympic events in primetime on tape delay, those numbers are just amazing and maybe NBC was right in doing this after all. Those are some of the best numbers for an Olympiad in 35 years!
I admit we have been addicted to Big Brother for years now. However, with the Olympics the whole family can watch!! Wipeout has gotten stupid. Need I explain? I don’t think so. We are especially excited to watch Track & Field. Our friend Duane Solomon will be running the 800m race. He is rated the 5th fastest runner in the US. We are so proud of him!! Check him out, Cheer our athletes on. They have worked hard to get where they are!! GO DUANE!! RUN!!! RUN!! RUNN!!! Added bonus to having friends as athletes, Skype. He has given us Skype tours of the Olympic Village along with other places…..
Go USA!!!
This is the third straight season of sucky Big Brother. After last night’s travesty, I’m just about done!
