Oh boy, another show about an eccentric police consultant with a sassy female handler. Oh but this one is named Sherlock, so it must be different.
Watson might start out as a handler in this version, but from what the producers have said, she will become a full-fledged NON-ROMANTIC partner, just the same as Watson was in canon Doyle. The writers have said that the reason they made the character a woman is because in canon, Holmes had difficulty dealing with women. The show aims to deal with his transition past this small-mindedness. Other than that, there is NO difference in the character of Watson. It makes no difference that Watson will be a woman.
As far as Holmes being eccentric, he’s the ORIGINAL eccentric detective. The others imitate him, not the other way around.
Which tells me how close they payed attention to the original canon. Holmes didn’t just have problems dealing with women, he had problems dealing with people in general. So there really isn’t a reason to change Watson to a girl.
If this is the best they’ve got, it’s trouble. The era of the brainless, cookie-cutter procedural is ending, and poor Nina isn’t smart or creative enough to know the next move. I predict this will be her last year in charge, then indy prod, long lunches, saying yes to every panel invitation, etc….as Les of course continuse to skate by….
Try getting in touch with reality. People who make comments about TV on the internet — including me — hate procedurals. The rest of America likes them a great deal. With Scandal on ABC and a news show on NBC as its competition, Elementary is going to be a ratings success; it is only a question of how big. Vegas may not be an absolute lock to succeed, but following NCIS and NCIS: LA on Tuesday nights, things are looking good for it.
Vegas looks okay but needs a more descriptive title.
Elementary looks very bad. Horrible casting (I really don’t like Lucy Liu), bad premise to try to capitalize on the Holmes history. This seems like just another procedural except with more negative aspects than all the others already on CBS.
I agree the title is poor. What was wrong with Ralph Lamb? not descriptive, but that’s not the issue. Theissue is Vegas is blah and has no personality as a name.
have either of you actually seen ELEMENTARY? Because it’s pretty great. VEGAS is so-so but ELEMENTARY is a winner, as is MADE IN JERSEY…CBS is going to have another strong year…
I have seen the first episode. I’ve also seen tons of other adaptations and know a play to make money of something that is popular when I see it. I’ll pick many of these adaptions over this one any day.
Hey PR, (aka um), Elementary is terrible. I’ve had a screening of the pilot with 6 friends, all with differing taste, and we could all agree that Elementary is terribly written and Lucy Liu can’t act her way out a paper bag. What a mess.
Elementary is such a rip off of Monk and Perception. Plus, it’s just like House, down to the pills and “Watson” sounds like “Wilson.” It’s also just like Sherlock Holmes on the BBC and Sherlock Holmes in the old movies and Sherlock Holmes in the books. It’s Sherlock Holmes.
Also, Lucy Lui is a really good actress and totally hot.
Elementary looks pretty good, but Cumberbatch is already doing a better job as Sherlock that seems almost exactly like how Miller’s playing him. I’ll try it, but …
Actually, Miller’s Sherlock is quite a bit different than Cumberbatch’s. Miller’s is softer-natured, not a “high-functioning sociopath.” Miller’s cares far more about people; he demonstrates that he does. In the scene where he deduces the woman’s corpse is hidden in the safe room, Miller’s Sherlock says “I hate it when I’m right.” BBC Sherlock would NEVER have said this. Miller’s Sherlock is much closer to canon Sherlock, who also was sympathetic and often soft-natured towards clients and victims. Truthfully, I find BBC Sherlock to be an ass! A really, really immature ass. Give me Miller’s take on the character any day!
Then Miss_Marples, you must not have seen the second season finale of SHERLOCK where the whole shocking twist happens BECAUSE of Sherlock’s affection for the people around him. Just because you don’t approve, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
And come to think of it, the first episode also had him saving the very woman who got the better of him.
I find Cumberbatch’s take much more believable as most high functioning people I know (not sociopaths) find life and the people around them boring. How far are they willing to push that? When does the line appear and does the line ever change with them? Watching Sherlock’s progression is far more interesting than a character that starts there already.
The problem is I don’t see the original Sherlock Doyal created sayin g that either.
Vegas looks worth checking out, and I don’t usually see aching from CBS that interests me in the least.
Elementary will do well for CBS. Complaints here are irrelevant. CBS’s audience doesn’t visit Deadline. CBS knows exactly what they’re doing, and their success shows it.
That new Holmes show is going to tank badly, but Vegas has potential but I agree with another poster here that the title needs to be changed.
TV staffs know you’re all stupid enough to watch, that’s why they shovel this garbage.
Is there a network worse than CBS? Their schedule is the epitome of bland, generic crap! Hopefully their descent starts NOW! (In #s at least, they’re already in the gutter vis-a-vis quality).
All this hating on Elementary makes me believe the folks and fans from G.B. are trembling in their shoes, fearful that their darling Ben C. will not be carried victorious through the streets on the shoulders of U.S. tv fans!! Slamming CBS and Miller/Liu is personal.
I think CBS will have a major hit on the largest net in Elementary. Fact is the occasional appearances of Sherlock on the public supported net is not sufficient for U.S. audiences who want a weekly routine. There’s room and audiences for both.
For one thing “Sherlock”, as much as it is loved by the people who love it, is still pretty much an unknown to a lot of people in America and for some “Elementary” will be what Sherlock Holmes will be to them because they’ve not seen the other.
But as time goes on Benedict will be THE Sherlock Holmes for this generation. It would be nice if more people did know about “Sherlock” and maybe with the attention of 13 Emmy nominations and hearing it mentioned in the many interviews about “Elementary” they might think it would be something they’d like to find out about.
I don’t dislike Elementary and am sure it will do well and be done well. Benedict has hoped it goes well(as he has said in interviews) because Jonny is a friend.
I sense a kind of hating of Benedict – or i guess his fans – but hey, he’s a Great actor and by this time next year what with’Parade’s End” and “Star Trek” more people will know it and that will be a good thing.
