Showtime’s breakout drama Homeland is packing an emotional punch with a first-look trailer for the upcoming second season set to a rendition of The Police’s Every Breath You Take. Claire Danes is back in action, this time both as a blonde and a brunette, joined by co-stars Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin. Homeland’s second season premieres on September 30.

Trying to decide if I want to brave another tedious season of Danes’ bugeyed, tearful histrionics and Patinkin’s shtick. Hopefully, the supporting players will intrigue as they did in the first season, but the trailer doesn’t offer all that much to get hyped about now.
What, aren’t you DYING to see a follow-up to Patinkin’s relationship woes? That was riveting stuff, yo.
Sorry, Homeland, but David Fincher and Trent Reznor already used the “choral-rendition-of-a-hit-song” approach in 2010′s “The Social Network”, copiously used in the trailer for that film.
It surely has also been done previously by others, not the least of which was the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” (not a movie but a similar approach.)
The trailer for Downton Abbey season 1 used exactly the same song…
And as we know, something can only be done once before it can nothing similar can ever be used again.
Get over yourself.
Yeah, I agree with CynicalCritic’s comment. I loved the first season of Homeland, except for the finale which screwed the pooch. Think they should’ve blown up Brody in the finale and not have him suddenly get a conscience because of his daughter. I hope Season 2 takes real risks in the storytelling and doesn’t just play at taking chances.
“Think they should’ve blown up Brody in the finale and not have him suddenly get a conscience because of his daughter.”
Did you see what happened AFTER the bomb sequence? You know, the sequence where he KILLS his former marine buddy. From what I could guess, Brody made the decision to protect his family … and only his family. He couldn’t care less about other people, as long as his family doesn’t get hurt, which makes him even more calculated in his thinking and process.
I think it would have done wonders for breaking story-telling boundaries if they had got Brody to blow himself up. Don’t have him come back in Season 2 & then the other marine could step up to the plate in the 2nd season. Change up the characters in-between seasons. That’s what I LOVED about “The Wire” and one of the great innovations to come out of that show.
Still gonna watch this, though as it was very well made television.
Seems a little on the nose — but then again, that’s kind of how I felt about the entire first season. So no surprises here.
Interesting that HOMELAND basically pulled the same kind of switch on viewers in its season one finale that THE KILLING did (seemingly leading up to a storyline conclusion, but wait, let’s drag it out for another year!) – except where was the viewer outrage? How long can they milk this particular story? As much as I enjoyed it last year, I’d have to admit there were several points when events seemed to drag. Having said there, I’m there for the season premiere.
Not really the same at all. The Killing was a “who done it?” story arc. Homeland was a “is he or isn’t he going to do it?” story arc. Big difference.
Also The Killing heavily advertised during the season, especially the first half of the season that the killer would be revealed in the final episode of that season. That’s primarily where the outrage came from. Sud’s FU attitude towards the viewers left a pretty big stink as well.
Exactly. ‘Homeland’ asked a question and provided an answer: ‘The Killing’ asked a question and … oh wait, that’s about it.
Critical comments like these are the reasons we are no longer going to enjoy The Killing. If the fans hadn’t been so negative, we might be looking forward to season 3 of The Killing, an excellent series with an amazing cast. Don’t do the same thing with the intriquing Homeland.
God forbid anyone would be “critical” of the series.
You film/tv junkies always have something to say. Nothing’s ever good enough for you. It’s funny actually.
Thanks Bob, I was just thinking the same thing. I don’t think they are TV junkies though, just bitter workers in the Industry.
Since the Social Network used a choir rendition of a popular song, no one else can do it? Shut up people. Your logic is flawed. David Fincher and Trent Reznor aren’t the only ones allowed to incorporate choir songs into their work. My gosh.
Did people honestly think they were going to Kill off the Male lead in the 1st season?
Even Lost never Killed off Jack/Kate which would have been the equivalent and they loved killing characters off that people liked (RIP Boone, Charlie, Paulo/Nikki
.
Call me naive. I honestly thought (and apparently so did everyone I spoke to last year who was following the series) that there would be a resolution to this storyline and they would move on to new threats season by season, much like 24 did.
I guess you haven’t seen the end of Lost? They killed off everyone!
They killed everyone off outside of the TV Show we saw. Not going to spoil but you did understand the ending correct (as much as you can understand someone elses vision).
Ummm… ever heard of Game of Thrones?
Game of Thrones is based on a book series which they are following. I understand your point but I don’t think it applies in the same way.
Spot on, K. Did followers of the series really think they’d nail Damian Lewis at the end and put a nice little bow on top? They have a lot to explore with this series, thanks to rich multi-layered characters and some great acting.
This is one of the best series on television, hands down.
If the show hadn’t established the strength of Brody’s relationship with his daughter troughout the whole season, some of this criticism may be legitimate. As it stands, becoming emotional over his daughter was very fitting.
Looks like I’ll be standing as the lone voice, but I think the trailer looks great. I’m pumped fr season two.
No I agree with you. It is great. I don’t know what is wrong with people on this site.
They just have too much break time for lunch at Starbucks that they have to hate on one of the best shows currently on TV.
Homeland is insane. Just flat out, spot on, brilliant television that fires on every level. It’s what most writers aspire to.
Can’t wait for Season 2.
Brilliant television exactly. Claire Danes’ transition into a full blown manic episode toward the end was worthy of an Emmy Nomination! Can’t wait for Season2. Peggy
Totally agree. And Damian Lewis moves between sympathetic to calculating with such ease and grace it is frightening. Love him!
Most of these haters are Breaking Bad fans. The first season wasn’t flawless, but it was mostly great, and the trailer is exceptional.
What are you smoking? I’m a hardcore Breaking Bad fan and I LOVE Homeland, I think it’s genius and can’t wait for it to return. Season one was reminiscent of Breaking Bad as each episode built upon itself. Every episode was tense, edge of your seat, and well done writing, directing, and acting wise. That being said, of course Br Ba is far superior, in a league of its own.
Just as Breaking Bad Season 5 A ends, this returns. Perfect timing.
Awesome trailer, awesome show.
Homeland is a great show, easily one of the best on TV, but this trailer is a aweful. Sorry, but you shouldn’t be able to get away with bad music edits in classic songs, or any song for that matter. I also hope other things happen in Season 2 besides people turning heads.
I gotta agree with the poor editing. I feel like a different song was originally used because the timing seems way off. Even with that, I like the visuals and I am thrilled to see the show coming September.
I’m a fan of BREAKING BAD and HOMELAND. If one put a gun to my head, I suppose I’d choose BB – but HOMELAND is incredible. The Season 1 finale was, perhaps, the best 90 minutes of television I’ve ever seen. Not sure how it “screwed the pooch”, according to an above comment. I’m also not sure where this obsession with coming to conclusions is rooted re: THE KILLING and HOMELAND – it’s about character and revelations, not about one giant reveal. That, to me, is the beauty of episodic television.
One of the best shows on TV right now. Eagerly anticipating the return!
Great trailer, great show.
Some of you are over-the-top critical
The show is less believable than Alf, the comedic hand-puppet alien that lived in the Valley. Everything about the Homeland is wrong, wrong, wrong. Can’t they afford a single military adviser just to get the haircuts and uniforms in the same zip-code as reality? It’s almost like watching a high school production of South Pacific; the uniforms don’t fit and the Polynesian girls look comfortably Anglo.
Don’t even get me started on planet-sized holes in the plot.
music by Scala & Kolacny Brothers, whose version of “Creep” is featured in the trailer for “The Social Network.”
