UPDATE: GLAAD released a statement today about the Salt Lake City affiliate KSL-TV’s decision not to air The New Normal, and GLAAD president Herndon Graddick invited KSL CEO Jeff Simpson to meet with the group. In addition, the show’s star, Ellen Barkin, expressed her concern via Twitter, saying, “Shame on you @kslcom.” Here is GLAAD’s statement:
“Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Grey’s Anatomy,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country.”
“We invite Jeff Simpson to sit down with GLAAD and local LGBT families. We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing ‘crude and rude’ content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah. They should make that right.”
NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL-TV strikes again. The station, which is owned by the Mormon church, announced today that it won’t air the network’s new comedy series New Normal. Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler, The New Normal stars Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha as gay partners who are having a baby through a surrogate. “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL’s parent company, Bonneville International, told local papers, including KSL sibling Deseret News. The New Normal is scheduled to air Tuesdays at 8:30 PM. Simpson cited “rude and crude” dialogue, scenes that “may be too explicit” or characterizations that “might seem offensive.” The show features provocative language mostly courtesy of the outspoken, politically incorrect character of the surrogate’s mother played by Ellen Barkin.
KSL, which does not carry NBC’s Saturday Night Live, has a long history of preemting NBC primetime series it deems controversial. Last fall, it dropped period drama The Playboy Club for “objectionable material. (The series was picked up by MyNetworkTV’s station in the Salt Lake City market.) KSL’s previous NBC casualties include NBC’s racy comedy Coupling and the religious-themed animated comedy God, the Devil and Bob. Both, as well as The Playboy Club were quickly cancelled. Barkin tonight called KSL’s decision “blatantly homophic” on Twitter. “Shame on u @KSLcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal. So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?” she wrote. “What will play in @NBCTheNewNormal spot? A dude reading from the bible?”
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, local station KUCW will air The New Normal on the weekends. The station carries SNL and often picks up sports programming when KSL pre-empts it for General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the paper says. The New Normal already got in the cross hairs of One Million Moms, the organization that also called for boycott of JC Penney when the department store chain hired openly gay talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson.

“What will play in @NBCTheNewNormal? spot? A dude reading from the bible?”
Perhaps…
If the guy reads it in a funny voice, it will probably be funnier than this show.
GLADD always wants someone to sit down with them. I have a suggestion on where GLADD can sit.
Perhaps if you were smart enough to realize it’s spelled GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) then you’d be smart enough to realize how much good the organization does instead of flinging a crude and unfunny remark towards them…
Should just yank the affiliation. Solves any issues and conflicts on either the network’s or the church’s end.
It would make sense for two networks to swap affiliates in Utah. Fox should go to KSL and NBC should go to what is now the Fox affiliate. That way, KSL can enjoy “conservative” Fox programming (with the exception of “Glee”) and NBC won’t have issues with KSL preempting its prime time schedule.
Hi, media ace.
With respect to Bonneville, the LDS, and GLAAD, I agree. Better yet, with respect to LDS, there are other alternatives in addition to what you metioned: Either LDS should spin-off Bonneville so that KSL can air all NBC programs or Bonneville would sell KSL 5 to either Fox Television (and be rebranded as “Fox 5″) or NBCUniversal (and be rebranded as “NBC 5″), yet keep KSL Newsradio. KSTU was once owned by Fox Television but now owned by Local TV, yet still affiliated with Fox Television.
I live in Philly and after seeing the promos for this show I wish the local affiliate here would replace it with the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This show looks awful and won’t ;ast 3 shows. But I also thought that about Whitney!
the fact that it looks awful is beyond the point, you moron.
it doesnt take much to imagine this show will be written as awful and annoyingly as Glee has become. I know i’m not alone in thinking this either. Gay has nothing to do with it.
Hey Duke of Earl, why don’t you give us some examples of WHY the show looks awful and why you think it will be canceled after 3 episodes? Unless you’re homophobic, which would make sense. Have you seen a full episode yet? That’s right, I didn’t think so.
Have you looked at any of the promos and thought they were the least bit entertaining??? I don’t have to watcha full episode to know it sucks. Don’t get so defensive, if you worked on the show I hope you try harder. I don’t care if it is about gays, the KKK, the tea party or the NRA it just ain’t funny!
You don’t have to find Tne New Normal promos funny, that’s your opinion. But if you find a “General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints program” more entertaining than THE PROMOS for a new comedy, then you lose all credibility with your comments as to what is lousy entertainment and what isnt.
When you call everyone who disagrees with you a bigot, you lose all credibility with me.
Dear LA and NYC,
In some places it ain’t the new normal…quite yet. Get over it and celebrate the show. (cue Rip Taylor confetti)
sincerely,
Just a regular guy
Right away, someone disagrees with you about this NEW NORMAL show and you bring up the H word.
Just because a show is about gays and someone doesn’t like the show, he’s a homophobe. Get a life!
Everyone has his opinion and his right to air it. Last time I checked it was the still the U.S.A.
Elizabeth,
I haven’t seen THE NEW NORMAL. It might very well suck the big one. But Duke hasnt seen the show yet either. I’m just trying to point the fact that Duke is h8ting on this show without having seen it. Since he can’t give an example of why he finds the clips so horrible it would get canceled after 3 shows, I can only assume it’s because of the gay content of the show.
I don’t think Animal Kingdom is funny either just from looking at the promos. You might want to report me to PETA. If you read 99.9% of the comments here you will see people giving their opinions after watching just a trailer or promo. Lighten up and don’t get defensive. A sucky show is a sucky show! The New Normal looks awful because it is not because it is about gays.
Mitt, I hate on plenty of shows without seeing them, such as pretty much the entire CW lineup. I think it is okay to make decisions based on promos and plot summaries, and that doesn’t make one a homophobe in itself. It could make you wrong (i.e., assuming something is not funny, scary, interesting, etc, before you have a chance to observe it first hand, but that’s beside the point). I object to every difference in opinion being characterized as homophobic or hating. In doing so, not only is the potency of the words diminished, but you are limiting free speech, which is damaging to us all. People have a right to express opinions even if it disagrees with yours, right or wrong.
Hey Duke…fair enough, man. I re-read my initial comment to you from your first post on here and I’ll admit it wasnt my finest posting. I always apologize when I feel it’s warranted, and in this case it is. Sorry for the knee-jerk reaction I gave you. My bad.
The lousy promos AND the gay content probably will prompt many people not to see it. So?
Free country.
KSL NBC won’t air The New Normal, so Ellen Barkin takes a cheap shot at Law & Order: SVU?
SVU and New Normal aren’t even the same type of shows in ANY shape or form, and SVU airs at 10PM and is a cop drama ANYWAY! Ellen Barkin’s just pissed off and she needs to make a point by pointing a finger at another NBC show, which mind you, helps assualted women in our society. Both SVU and lead Mariska Hargitay, I went to the Joyful Foundation event in LA earlier this year, so uplifting!
I don’t like New Normal because it’s about NOTHING to me. As for SVU, I hope NBC keeps it for a few more years, I’d rather know how to jam a guy up who’s trying to rape me than how a gay couple gets a child. Don’t get me wrong, nothing against that, but I’m a woman and I don’t intend on being a surrogate.
New Normal, pass. The Playboy Club might as well make a come back!
Talk about missing the point.
Ellen Barkin was pointing out that KSL has no problem with showing TV shows regarding sexual crimes against women & children but has a problem with a comedy about two loving gay parents.
And for your information, SVU isn’t a documentary about how to get away from a rapist. It’s a show that has VICTIMS, i.e.people who didn’t get away from their rapists. This is why it’s known as Special VICTIMS Unit.
You really do sound like a person who would vote for Todd Akin.
“I happen to love the gays. I could never get my hair to look this good without ‘em.”–> I guess the “new normal” is to steal jokes from the Arrested Development pilot.
Stolen word for word. How original.
Who is Ellen Barkin? Is she in the television business? Never heard of her, nor care about her opinion.
UPDATE… my grandmother just told me that Ellen Barkin was an actress in the 1970s.
Oh. Then it must have been some other Ellen Barkin who won a Tony Award last year and co-starred with Clooney, Pitt, Damon and Pacino a couple of years before that.
I just watched the pilot today and that is definitely not the line. It is:
Lucille
“Look at what the homosexuals have done to me.”
Michael
“You can’t just comb that out and reset it?”
Jessica Walter’s character was referring to the homosexuals protesting the yacht club’s stance on homosexual members, Michael assumed it was her hair. so both SteveLA and James K are absurd to say it was stolen. It’s not even in the same vein as The New Normal ‘joke’ which, btw, was lame and I say that as a homosexual.
Well, whether the line SteveinLA cites was stolen or not, it still sucks. And that’s what they have in the promo, which is designed to attract viewers.
the new “normal” is now what 2% of the population says it is?
I don’t think the show is implying that it is now common for most new families to be two gay men and a surrogate, I think the implication is that a “normal” family is one founded on love between two partners and the child they are bringing in to the world. Which should hopefully apply to more than 2% of the population
As Playhouse said, why doesn’t Comcast pull the affiliation? Hopefully they won’t renew it. Maybe the MyNetwork affiliate would rather be an NBC. Screw those homophobic bigots. Why does a church need to be an affiliate for a major network. Let them own some weak signaled station to spew their religious views.
So, if a business decides not to carry a vendor’s latest product, AJ says “screw” that business, AJ wants to reduce their market (“weak”) for their opinions he disagrees with (“spew”), yet somehow this hateful anti-Mormonism makes AJ cool and not an intolerant bigot?
Yes, Jason, I do believe we should all say “screw you” to people who hate people just because of who they are. Comcast should pull their affiliation. Comcast wants its shows shown as scheduled across the country. That is best for their business. And yes, Comcast will have the right to do that when their contract is up for renewal.
How tolerant of you.
Yep, I guess I am intolerant. Intolerant of those who are intolerant.
Way to claim the moral high ground there.
I think they should air it, but it’s interesting that–aside from SNL–all of the past shows they won’t air have been pretty bad and quickly cancelled anyway.
…I may or may not watch the show, but it’s their station and should carry whatever they want, not just what NBC shoves down their throat…I wish more stations showed independence …with all the other media outlets available I’m sure anyone who wants to see the show will be able to…
If you’ve never been there Salt Lake City is a different place. But sometimes what works in L.A. or New York doesn’t play in middle America. Remember the advice Johnny Carson gave Leno ?
I wouldn’t call SLC Middle America. SLC is one extreme. I wish people in HW would recognize that the country is not divided between the ones “who get it” (those in NY or LA) and Bible-thumping rubes. There are plenty of us here in Middle America who don’t identify with either group.
Yeah that’s right…. In a free country a group or person should not be able to choose what program it airs on a station they own based upon their personal convictions. Truth is a station should be able to choose what they show based on any reason if they own their station and if NBC wants to pull the affiliation they are a free company as well.
I don’t look at it as the networks spewing their religious views. I just don’t want to have the gay agenda ramming it down our throats during primetime TV. Go ahead and be gay. I don’t care. Just stop wearing it like a badge on your shoulder. What would happen if I wanted to organize a heterosexual pride parade? I’d be labeled as a hater. Double standards abound. And I’m tired of ignorant people labeling it as homophobic. It’s not fear, it’s anger.
Of course there isn’t a hetereosexual pride parade. We don’t need one. Were the majority and never have had any hate directed at our sexual orientation.
Until now. There’s plenty of hate being spewed by gay advocates at people who don’t agree with them.
Notice the abundance of sitcoms which focus around heterosexual couples? Here’s one focusing around a gay couple. Don’t like it, don’t watch.
When only 2 percent of the population is gay and 98% is not, why do we need ANY gay sitcoms? You speak as if this should be some sort of 50/50 arrangement, which is absurd.
Using your argument, we shouldn’t have any shows about Blacks, because they make up only 13% of the population. Or how about Latinos? They only make up 16%. Or what about Asians? They’re only 6%.
According to you, every show should be about heterosexual white males. Nothing against HWM’s at all….but this is a very diverse country (world, really), and I see nothing wrong with having shows about different races and sexual orientations.
And there are more women than men I the US, so all casts should have a female majority. I’m for that!
Yes, in a day and age when we have thousands of channels to pick from why would anybody make a show for a niche market? And only your unhinged mind saw people demanding a 50/50 split because nobody even mentioned anything remotely like that.
You sure sound homophobic to me.
“traditional comedy about gay folks”
Now that one of the funniest oxymoron’s I’ve ever read!
I both live in Salt Lake and am a part of the LDS church and I think this is absurd. First I think The New Normal looks pretty bad but I hate the fact that KSL chooses what to show and what not to show based off the church. This for a as far back as I can remember. The earliest I remember is in the 90′s they wouldn’t show any of the Picket Fences episodes they deemed wrong which ended up being a lot and that show won Emmy’s.
I have been a producer on 3 independent films shot entirely in Utah. At first I always enjoy myself and all the nice people I meet. By the time a couple months have passed and shooting has been completed I flee back to Los Angeles screaming and feeling like I am losing my mind, totally freaked out that I am trapped in a real life “Stepford”. It’s the weirdest most oppressive “Children of the Damned” esque place on earth! The kind of place where the NBC affiliate would refuse to air a sitcom because they don’t like that it portrays a gay couple favorably. The idea that Mitt Romney even has a chance of being our president is beyond terrifying. I don’t think the average American has a clue how unfathomably creepy and repressive the Mormon religion is!!!
Is this affiliate’s decision really likely to affect the show one way or another in terms of survival? I doubt it, and who was sitting around actually expecting a Mormon owned station to air the show anyway?
Really? Is that a surprise. This country is slowly falling into a sinkhole because it will not progress. Religion is its own evil that is killing mankind, and the U.S. thrives on letting it dictate policy.
You would think that KSL would affiliate with a network like CBS, old skewing, very conservative, very safe shows. Not NBC which takes risks has nothing to lose, even though most shows on that network haven’t been working, and are usually canceled.
Gotta hand it to this station though. Every primetime show it refuses to air has flopped.
Maybe it’s because most of America, even if the other stations do air the programs, isn’t as liberal as Hollywood often thinks. While censorship may not be the answer, NBC might be smart to reconsider its programming.
Which is worse…a church standing by it’s convictions or a company tolerating bigotry for profit?
Why is is even a shocker? The irony is the the Mormons have a much higher percentage of gays and lesbians who either escape far far away that cult or live sad closeted lives.
Proof?
All social convictions aside, this show is a blatant ripoff of modern family. Once again, NBC is up a creek without a paddle. And I support the affiliate’s right not to carry it.
You will be rewarded one million dollars when you point out a show that has aired in the last decade that isn’t a riff on a previous show.
Salt Lake City is no more middle America than Los Angeles or New York. It’s simply the other end of the spectrum.
I don’t think anyone is taking a shot at SVU; I love all the Law and Order shows and have missed very few. And I’ve not yet seen an episode of “The New Normal,” other than the commercials, since I hadn’t realized it started yet.
But in comparing the two genres of shows; I would rather watch “The New Normal” with a child than SVU. Both shows may depict people unlike the majority of the population, but only one of the shows would give the kids nightmares.
You’re onto something, get Matt and Trey Stone to write a sitcom about Mormons and its bound to be 1000% funnier thannthe drivel the networks keep churning out. Of course it would have to be on cable, but theres nothing worth watching on broadcast anymore so theyd be in good company.
Its hard to defend NBC against the religious zealots when they give us crap like The Playboy Club.
With Mitt as president, expect this kind of thing to be “The New Normal”
We sure do hope so.
Yay for government censorship and obfuscation! Romney / Ryan 2012!
Most of the above posts are both missing and proving the central point of this story.
“The New Normal” doesn’t want or expect a devoted audience in Salt Lake City. What “The New Normal” wants is attention and the bragging rights that only censorship and Mormon condemnation can provide for a new gay-themed show. I’m sure they’re turning somersaults over there that getting the boot from a market that wouldn’t watch them anyway has now created a news story in which all conscientious liberals — and I’m both a lesbian and a liberal — will agree they’re the brave and blameless victims of small-mindedness and Hate. In this scenario the actual quality of the show they’re making is immaterial. We all have to watch it and support it if only to strike a blow for the freedom to love.
But from what I’ve seen of the show the Mormons will do well to give it a miss. It shouldn’t be watched by them or anyone who has to get through it without recourse to a strong cup of coffee.
Dora wins the “Best Comment Award.”
The loss of that station is a loss of revenue. I doubt the show’s producers are turning somersaults over that.
