UPDATE: GLAAD released a statement today about the Salt Lake City affiliate KSL-TV’s decision not to air The New Normal, and GLAAD president Herndon Graddick invited KSL CEO Jeff Simpson to meet with the group. In addition, the show’s star, Ellen Barkin, expressed her concern via Twitter, saying, “Shame on you @kslcom.” Here is GLAAD’s statement:
“Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like Modern Family, Glee and Grey’s Anatomy,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country.”
“We invite Jeff Simpson to sit down with GLAAD and local LGBT families. We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing ‘crude and rude’ content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah. They should make that right.”
NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL-TV strikes again. The station, which is owned by the Mormon church, announced today that it won’t air the network’s new comedy series New Normal. Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler, The New Normal stars Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha as gay partners who are having a baby through a surrogate. “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL’s parent company, Bonneville International, told local papers, including KSL sibling Deseret News. The New Normal is scheduled to air Tuesdays at 8:30 PM. Simpson cited “rude and crude” dialogue, scenes that “may be too explicit” or characterizations that “might seem offensive.” The show features provocative language mostly courtesy of the outspoken, politically incorrect character of the surrogate’s mother played by Ellen Barkin.
KSL, which does not carry NBC’s Saturday Night Live, has a long history of preemting NBC primetime series it deems controversial. Last fall, it dropped period drama The Playboy Club for “objectionable material. (The series was picked up by MyNetworkTV’s station in the Salt Lake City market.) KSL’s previous NBC casualties include NBC’s racy comedy Coupling and the religious-themed animated comedy God, the Devil and Bob. Both, as well as The Playboy Club were quickly cancelled. Barkin tonight called KSL’s decision “blatantly homophic” on Twitter. “Shame on u @KSLcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal. So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?” she wrote. “What will play in @NBCTheNewNormal spot? A dude reading from the bible?”
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, local station KUCW will air The New Normal on the weekends. The station carries SNL and often picks up sports programming when KSL pre-empts it for General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the paper says. The New Normal already got in the cross hairs of One Million Moms, the organization that also called for boycott of JC Penney when the department store chain hired openly gay talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson.

I agree, cheesy modern family ripoff. Nough said.
I don’t need the local NBC affiliate to refuse to air it though, I can easily ignore this dud on my own.
If the Mormon Church was allowed to buy this station, then it should come as a surprise to no one that they won’t air the show. If the FCC doesn’t feel the owners are living up to their expectations they’ll do something about it, otherwise, nothing to see here.
A really huge loss for the Mormon community, this show looks like a winner. When they showed ads for this every second during the olympics I had to turn away from the television each time i was laughing so hard (the way the Ellen Barkin character talked about “the gays”, it was hilarious!!), I’m talking about “Whitney”-level funny!
Why is this show so controversial when there has already been shows like Will and Grace and Modern Family?
But polygamy is perfectly normal, right Romneyites?
Look, the entire NBC line up, with maybe one exception, is complete crap. All the new shows sampled during the Olympics looked horrific. The nadir was the one about the animal hospital and the chimps running around.
The only thing worth watching on NBC is Leno. With his rapier like wit, timely jabs at current news figures like Monica Lewinsky and George Bush and the way his probing, incredibly deft interviews reveal a skill set Mike Wallace and Charlie Rose only wish they had possessed, this show is not to be missed. Especially when he has the chimps from the animal hospital show.
How dare you, just because you don’t get something (the animal hospital show w/ the chimps clearly went way over your head) you don’t need to demean it to make yourself feel better!
Totally agree about Leno and his interviewing skills, tho, when he asks some vapid starlet about a funny story that happened while she was filming her latest movie (probably made up by her publicist) i’m completely entranced. and then a moment of levity when either the guest or leno makes a naughty double-entendre by mistake, what skill the man has!
Way to go Ellen Barkin taking negative swipes at NBC’s centerpiece franchise Law and Order and then the Bible in consecutive tweets!
It is amazing how one show can bring the uproar and it is not the air yet. If you don’t like a show, than don’t watch it and change the channel and watch something on the tv channel. I don’t need big brother telling me what I should or shouldn’t on my television. Good luck to the future NBC.
Temus – you know they did, right? (The Book of Mormon)
Are people really stupid enough to call The New Normal a rip off of Modern Family just because there’s a gay couple?! Where’s the bigoted mother on Modern Family? Where’s the surrogate mother on Modern Family?
She was on “Arrested Development.”
That is all just hilarious. At least someone else picked up SNL for those unfortunate people. I couldn’t live in a city that took that most basic of joys away.
I live in GA and its pretty much just as bad. So many states have gone red or blue – My vote doesnt even count…And if you go outside the city of Atlanta – even to the suburbs youre greeted by all these people who want us to go back to the 1950s or 20s.
Its strange that every time a person stands up for their family values beliefs, they’re labeled as homophobic. If tolerance is the issue, why can’t we tolerate an opposing view. I commend KSL TV for standing for their moral values.
Ellen Barkin’s reaction is ridiculous. If they don’t want to air it, it’s their business. The show looks awful, anyway.
Chris, that woman has been known for ranting and raving about literally everything on Twitter as she might have anger management issues and she could seriously use some help, as her career seems to be going downwards and she needs the attention in the worst way.
if we can only get NBC new york to stop airing pretty much everything on NBC i think i’d be happy.
@ Hey Zeus: Spot on! Hell get the gecko from Geico anf Fruit of the Loom for cross-promotion.
WOW
NBC needs to drop this station when their affiliate agreement is up – What are you gaining from a channel that doesnt air your programs. They dont air SNL.. Just shocking in 2012
SO much homophobia and hate in SLC…especially Mitt Romney’s church. Im surprised they dont remove any shows with black people…or divorce…
This makes me wanna throw up.
I’m sorry talking salamanders? Please tell me where I can find this information because as a member of the lds church I’ve never heard of talking salamanders. With regards to the show you can’t blame the thoughts and actions of one person on the entirety of a religion.
I’m gay and this show looks like crap. More white, upper middle class, slightly fey gays. Yeah, never seen that before. Not everyone that is uninterested in this is homophobic.
Why does GLAAD care? Its not as if the show isn’t on another station. KSL is just choosing not to air it. So what? They have a different viewpoint. Get over it. Just because some people choose to be gay, doesn’t mean everyone is forced to applaud it and approve it. If you want to watch the show, change the channel and watch it.
Like a lot of their new offerings on NBC, this show probably will be done and over with after a few episodes. Look at Playboy Club as a perfect example. No matter where or when it airs, if people don’t watch it, ratings go down and no advertising revenue for the station or network is made on the back-end, and amazingly, KSL has called a lot of these shows right in not airing them as they got quickly 86ed by NBC after a few airings and this show will probably be no different.
I applaud the Salt Lake City affiliate’s decision. We don’t need any more trash like this on TV. There is nothing New about this Hollyweird Trash and definitely nothing Normal. Everyone affiliated with this piece of garbage should be very ashamed of themselves. I am afraid there minds are Reprobrate
The New Normal: where cliched jokes, stale and predictable characters, unfair and biased assumptions of conservative people, and a skewed political agenda are supposed to “speak” to our modern society in sharp and funny ways while shedding a light on the “new normal.”
Really Ryan Murphy?
How about a more pressing issue–why did they cast Brandon Routh instead of a gay actor? There are plenty of good gay actors in Hollywood, but they are passed over for heteros. Double standard.
The New Normal is one of the funniest pilots this year (Partners & 1600 Pen are also good, The Mindy project’s only jokes are in the promo, the rest is crap) but I have to say the humor and the language are WAAAAAYY too mature for a 20:30 airing (and most of the harsh ones are those of EB’s character towards gays).
Do you work in the industry? If so, that’s why we have such horrible comedies on TV, people like you who have no sense of humor. How could you possibly find “the New Normal” funny? Please find a new career so we can get some people with taste who will greenlight better shows.
And people think having a Mormon as a president is a good idea.
