CBS is going vintage in its promo campaign for new 1960s drama Vegas. The network is launching a series of 1960s-style newsreels blending historical footage from the CBS archives and characters and scenes from the series. (Some of the historical footage will be set in Las Vegas, such as when Senator John F. Kennedy campaigned there — and the Rat Pack was appearing locally. Other archive footage will include national news, including the famous Kennedy/Nixon debate.) The actors who play the reporter and anchor in the debut reel (video below) will recur in the Facebook campaign. Vegas, which chronicles Las Vegas’ emergence as a gambling mecca and its takeover by the mob, stars Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, Carrie-Anne Moss and Jason O’Mara.

Vegas is the show I’m most excited about for Fall. This promo isn’t my fave, but my enthusiasm is undaunted. TeamQuaid!
I hope this broadcast news covers the cigarette ban in the casinos of that time. That would help to explain the lack of cigarette smoke and smoking in the casino shots of the pilot..
Idea is great, but this looks beyond fake.
Annnnnnnnnnnd cancelled.
Wow. That wasn’t very well executed.
Great idea – but totally inauthentic.
C’mon, we can do better.
Terrible promos. CBS can do better.
Wow, is that the best voiceover they could get? It’s really amateurish.
I think the promo is fantastic! It’s fun and i think purposely over the top. Lame untalented dismal lemmings with such unimportant lackluster lives that you would find it necessary to pick apart this promo and bash it for unauthenticity… Quit killing the fun in things.. Just cause you are miserable doesn’t mean you have to ruin it for us happy folk.
As someone who’s enjoyed all the 60s set dramas as of late, including Pan Am and The Playboy Club, I’m quite excited to see this.
Cool idea for a promo too, especially from CBS.
This is quite possibly the most amateurish promo I’ve seen from any major network, hell any CABLE network, ever. All the videos I’ve seen online with actual clips from the show look fantastic, but this?
I just remembered it’s very similar to the fake “News Of The World” reel that plays at Disneyland’s “Indiana Jones” ride right before they explain how to buckle a seat belt. Yeah, this “Vegas” promo pretty much belongs in Disneyland it’s so Mickey Mouse.
This “period promo” looks like a big log of cheese. The promos CBS has been running on TV are deadly dull. In one scene the LV ‘developer’ unveils an architectural model of the “new’ Las Vegas. It doesn’t look grand or huge but more like a model put together by committee in second grade. Chiklis and Quaid are fine actors.Even they won’t be able to keep this turkey afloat
Worst promo I have ever seen!
As someone who worked in TV back then, this looks about right!
Bad. Really bad. Not well executed. Messaging bad. Horrific branding. Geez.
Is it certain that this was cut by CBS promo? I’m shocked they’d put this out.
This is great stuff. Great idea given that CBS probably had a station in Las Vegas in 1960.
Great idea but way over the top with the voiceover, mugging and obvious green-screen. No retro-sounding announcers out there anymore? There are actual period CBS network bumpers and promos right on YouTube they should have referenced. No excuses these days for stuff like this.
Clever cameo with Quaid. It’s interesting that such a short clip seems to have generated such strong reactions. Like it or not, it’s gotten some buzz going about the show. Isn’t that what it’s supposed to do?
