EXCLUSIVE: Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman will lend their voices to lead roles in Lego, Warner Bros tent pole animated 3D film that will be released February 28, 2014. Studio is keeping the specific character under wraps, but I’m told that Freeman will voice a character called Vitruvius and they will join Chris Pratt and Will Arnett in the film. Latter reportedly plays a Lego version of Batman. The plot: an ordinary Lego mini-figure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil Lego tyrant from gluing the universe together. The film will be directed by the 21 Jump Street team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who wrote the script and who share story credit with Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing. Banks is repped by UTA and Untitled and Freeman by CAA. Australian animation house Animal Logic will do the CGI work.

When Lego is considered a tentpole franchise starter it’s time for the Mayan Calendar to be proven accurate. The world needs to come to an end on December 21, 2012 as they predicted. Or maybe the destruction can be localized to the major movie studios and television networks.
Lego is big, big, big business now. There are a ton of Lego video games in addition to whole swaths of kit shelf space in stores. There are now Lego board games and even a theme park.
This actually WILL be a tentpole film for kids.
Once they’re cast in a 3D movie about Legos do you think actors stop laughing before or after putting a down payment on a flying yacht?
This sounds HORRIBLE!
“…a lego version of Batman”. Chris Nolan has barely left the lot, and Warners are taking a dump on Batman (again). How predictable.
No one — absolutely no one — wants to see Elizabeth Banks in a movie. Nice person, I’m sure, very smart, but zero appeal.
Couldn’t agree more with the comms here. LEGO movie???? Freeman and Banks are probably vomiting their way to the bank. Big paychecks…but how far to you go a paycheck? Come on!
If they do any references to Star Wars, they have *got* to have Donald Faison do the voice of the Black Stormtrooper.
This has the be a joke from The Onion. Right? Please?
Wow. Just “wow”.
Warners: It’s NOT too late to pull the plug. Just saying. Better minor embarrassment now than major embarrassment (and red ink) in a year and a half.
Next up: Silly Putty: The Musical
I’m still holding out hope for a film about Gak.
Has nobody played the LEGO Games here and how absolutely fun these kinds of things can be? Obviously they’re inspired by what those games have done to do this and while it may not appeal to some adults (who often believe that the film industry is tarnished by these things), it’ll do pretty well among the younger set and the adults who play those games and can see the nods being done in it.
seriously, lighten up. End times because of a LEGO movie that could be pretty fun.
Sadly,this isn’t satire.
Why all the hate? This film will be brilliant and hilarious. Do your research, people. You’ve got Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of the brilliantly hilarious 21 Jump Street adaptation; you’ve got Chris McKay of Robot Chicken directing the stop-motion animation and Animal Logic on the CGI, and a, so far, amazing ensemble cast. It will be epic.
I can’t figure out if the jaded cynicism is at fault or if most of the commenters here are that out of touch. (Probably a bit of both.)
Lego is one of the biggest, most successful brands in kids’ entertainment. They’ve gone through a cultural renaissance with their line of Star Wars, DC, Harry Potter, Marvel toys and video games. Lord and Miller have proven themselves in the animated and live-action worlds. This movie is going to be GIGANTIC (and I’m willing to bet, very entertaining).
What BrickBuilder and Mat said.
It’s comical how simplistic and uninformed the vast majority of commenters are here.
LEGO is one of the biggest children’s toy franchises in the world. Warner Brothers has hired directors, in Lord & Miller, who have shown they can successfully direct both a great animated film (CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS) and live action comedy (21 JUMP STREET). On top of which, they’ve done it with major comedic stars like Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
Now, they’re casting this movie around big, proven, talented comedic stars like Banks and Arnett and mixing in the credibility of a Morgan Freeman. And I’m sure other big name comedic actors will be named soon.
They are going about this in the exact right way.
Contrast this with how Universal went about putting together BATTLESHIP. The exact opposite. And I expect, the exact opposite result at the box office.
Come on, commenters. Use your heads.
seconded.
Such negativity! I have to agree with Brickbuilder’s comment. Lego is a huge toy brand and the Lego company have already made several short, direct to video movies, including Star Wars titles. As a parent (OK and a Lego builder myself) I have enjoyed the movies with my kids, and have also played the computer games – which are Lego versions of some of the most incredibly successful franchises in entertainment – Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter and Pirates Of The Caribbean. If this movie is anything like the games or the previous movies, it should be good, harmless fun.
Yep, all the soulless, vindictive comments are about right. As usual. I think it’s fair to say NONE of you are members of the target audience.
“a quest to stop an evil Lego tyrant from gluing the universe together.”
I’m sorry, but that sounds awesome enough to give it a look.
