EXCLUSIVE: I’m told that Warner Bros is getting a new script from Akiva Goldsman for the first installment of Stephen King’s mammoth Western The Dark Tower, and that within two weeks, the studio will be making a decision on whether to green light the first leg of one of the most daring and ambitious projects to come along since The Lord Of The Rings. And here is a new wrinkle to add to the mix. Javier Bardem is no longer in the mix as gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that director Ron Howard and producers Brian Grazer and Goldsman have been talking with their A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe about playing Deschain. While there is no deal with Crowe, that is the star that Warner Bros will be evaluating as the studio decides on whether to take a leap on an eight-volume book that has a huge following, with Howard, King and their partners planning a multi-platform presentation that could be unforgettable. The story will be told through three films and two limited run TV series.
The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel. When I last wrote about this, Universal had dropped out and Warner Bros had sparked to the idea of taking on this franchise, possibly with HBO handling the TV component that would bridge the the first and second feature films, with another limited run TV series to follow. Given HBO’s adventurous forays into fantasy with Game of Thrones, it seems like the ideal venue.
If Crowe stepped up as the gunslinger, it would certainly help the project. He has clearly gotten back into the leading man game where he was when making films like Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. Crowe played a big role of Jor-El in Warner Bros’s Man of Steel relaunch of the Superman franchise, and he is currently playing the title Biblical hero in the Darren Aronofsky-directed Noah for New Regency and Paramount. We’ll know soon if that resurgence takes him into an Old West fantasy, courtesy of what King has called his answer to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
In a climate of fear and remakes–is Sony Pictures actually remaking Jumanji, a film that came out less than 20 years ago?–it would be grand to see Warner Bros have the stones to take the kind of daring risk that seems only to be taken by the likes of HBO, Showtime, AMC and other pay and cable networks. It’s that risk taking that has put those networks in a position of being at the center what will eventually be viewed as a golden age for daring quality TV series.

In reading this, I can’t help thinking how much better Christian Bale would be suited to the role than Russell Crowe. Somehow Crowe just does not fit any image I have ever had of the Gunslinger — haunted and emaciated, not hearty the way Crowe is.
I think Russell Crow would be great.
Forget the feature film part, and just do this franchise as an HBO series. Dark Tower is a great story that will never pull enough of an audience to support 3 films. King is an acquired taste, proven over and over by the small box office for his previous bestsellers. Does anyone really think they’ll continue the franchise if the first movie bombs? I’d rather see a complete series on HBO with smaller stars, rather than one movie with big stars that tanks the franchise.
Yes I read all the books casting will be hard and movie could bomb out but a series on hbo would be good, we need a turn in the mystical and paranormal. Vampires, zombies, witches, werewolves and kinds of beasties films, tv programmes etc think they have had their bit of stage light now lets give the mystical a chance.
Ironically, vampires, witches, and creatures similar to werewolves all make appearances in the Dark Tower series. Imagine that. You are 25% percent right that zombies have almost outgrown their popularity, but the Walking Dead may be the best drama on TV so there’s that…
I like that idea. i would love some movies put out, but the fact that ron howard is the director leads me to believe he can’t pull off the darkness that is required. tv would be much safer, and like you said, give these roles to smaller stars.
Absolutely right. Hard to get the ones in charge to see it though. They seem to like to try and grab a big box office than a safe TV revenue.
Right there with you, Kiddo. I *hope* this feature/tv/feature/tv idea works out, but the Tower feels perfect for a long, GAME OF THRONES style HBO series. In my heart-of-hearts, I hope the feature script Goldsman turns in becomes the pilot.
Second season of Game of Thrones was not as good as season one.The reason…no heavy duty star with a sreen gravitas to focus your attention. Just a bunch of 20-something actors with beards who all look and talk the same.In the first season they killed off Sean Bean and in the second season you hardly saw the powerful character of Jaimie kingslayer…the dark tower better get some powerful actor to carry it.
I agree I have read all the books and I don’t want to see the story comprimised by Hollywood. Cable would be a much better venue for it
Totally agree. Look at Game of Thrones. I don’t think that would have worked as a film series, but as a television series, it’s huge and has an excellent following. Plus with a series, they can stretch it out and make it a bigger cash cow, so everybody wins.
king may well be an “acquired taste”, but a great story is a great story, and while i personally don’t rate most of king’s work, The Dark Tower stands well apart from anything else he has written. I am also concerned that it will not survive beyond the first movie, so perhaps HBO would be the better option. It is a shame though; it WOULD be a movie and a half if it were done right. Russell Crowe as Roland? O Discordia…….Liam Neeson would fit better than Russell (if he could pick a bloody accent and stick with it!) I guess we just have to watch this space constant readers!
The Shining, The Green Mile, Misery, Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me…
Small box office following? Plenty of box office following when the movie is developed properly and respectfully.
The Dark Tower will be a huge success if same elements of any successful movie are present… Good script, Good actors, Good director.
I think Nicholas Cage would be perfect as Roland.Halie Berry as Suzanne.
No, just no.
NO! Absolutely not Nicholas Cage as Roland. Don’t get me wrong, I love him-just don’t see him as Roland. Definitely not Russell Crowe either! I have always seen Roland as Clint Eastwood-ish.
Clint Eastwood from his “Man with no Name” Western movies is how I always pictured Roland. To bad he wasn’t young enough to play the part now.
I always visualised Clint in the role, but now I think that the guy in Justified could do it, Timothy Olifant or something.
personally I’d prefer Viggo Mortenson as the Gunslinger. He’s got the chops to be both gritty and heartless aswell as loving and tender.
Also for Susanah/Odetta/Detta I’d go with Gina Torres.
Is Viggo the guy from “The Road”? I remember he was in LotR, but I honestly can’t remember if it is the same guy. Anyway, as they are blurring in my mind, either would work, or both, if they are the same person, and I think they are.
I don’t think Crowe works very well.
I would repeat that it would be much better as a GoT type HBO series, I don’t really understand the idea of doing movies and an HBO series, I guess they are trying to be edgy or creative or something and just came up with that because it seems weird. I remember that JJ Abrams was talking about doing this, I think he talked both about a film series and an HBO show. I guess he is going to be busy with ST for the rest of his life, but I would think he could find time to oversee an HBO show, with that other guy from Lost, Orwitz or something (same guy who does his other newer show that I can’t remember the name of with the Dawson’s Creek kid). I can’t understand why Ron Howard would be involved with this. It seems in no way to relate to his style.
Anyway, in the end, Roland is going to be played by Nick Cage, and he will look very worried for the whole film, as he tries to solve things. You guys are just going to have to deal with it.
They did mention actors playing Roland, no idea where Nick Cage came from but he would be a terrible choice to be honest.
Definte no to Nick Cage. Please not him
@Sara, way to think inside the box.
NO Nicholas Cage and definitely NO Halle Berry…
I think Russell Crowe would be a great Roland…
Crowe is an awesome actor but he is not Roland. For one thing, he wouldn’t have the stare. Of course, Hollywood often tries to “fit” actors to roles all of the time but I don’t see King readers liking this and this is the crowd that they should be targeting.
No No No to Russell Crowe!! Nick Cage??? Please!!! No Way! It should be Viggo Mortenson who gets the part of Roland. Susannah should be played by Nicole Beharie. Eddie Dean…James Franco. These are my picks and I have read the books multiple times!
How about either Gerard Butler or Jason Omara?? either would be a much better choice than Russell Crowe (no, no, no!!)
Have you read the books? Yes? Well then shut your mouth because he is the anti-Roland. I think I’m going to vomit.
Both Crowe and Bale appeared in the same Western movie remake, 3 10 to Yuma, and Crowe was far superior in capturing the Western vibe. Plus, Crowe does gritty characters far better than Nolan, compare Crowe´s Maximus to Bale´s Batman or Connor.
Bale is a great actor but Russell Crowe is a better Roland imho.
I would have to say, I agree with you. But while reading the books, I myself see Clint Eastwood when he was young… He is truely, to me, the only actor that would’ve been absolutely perfect in nearly every way. I mean with the way King discribes Roland in the book how could you not see Clint.
Such a shame he’s grown to old for the part.
Oh man I so agree, to me Roland has ALWAYS been Clint Eastwood in my mind!! Circa about The Good The Bad & The Ugly….but alas it is not to be. I gotta say I’m waaaaaay happier with the idea of Russell Crowe playing Roland than Javier, I nearly choked to death & screamed at the computer in astonished dismay when I first saw that announced!! He was the antithesis of Roland Deschain for God’s sake, hello people did you even READ the books before that near disastor of a casting call?? I like Christian Bale, & yes his body style may be more like the description of Roland…but he just doesn’t have the grit, the quiet strength of will or the ability Crowe does as an actor.
I 100% fully agree about Clint Eastwood. Every year that he has gotten older, I’ve quietly mourned that he wouldn’t be Roland. Now that Clint is out of the picture, they should just scrap it until a perfect person shows up. I really scared that it’s going to be horrible.
Entirely agree, Clint was the only perfect candidate for the role. Javier was definitely a huge mistake, physically bearing NONE of Roland’s features. Might as well have cast Ricky Martin for the role! At least Crowe has blue eyes, that’s got to be a start.
i agree. when i read the gunslinger books, and im re-reading all of them again, and loving them even more than the first time, the only people i ever imagine when i read about Roland is Clint Eastwood or Lee Van Cleef. i also think an HBO series would be much better than a film trilogy. Not sure how these books would move over to film/tv but am keen to find out !!!
I too see Clint Eastwood , albeit a younger version as Roland, but I also see Bruce Campbell as a more than feasible gunslinger.
I agree, I have re-read the entire series more times than I can remember, and it has always been a young Clint Eastwood. I cannot believe that Crowe will embrace Roland and bring him to life!!
Unfortunately in this generation of actors, I can’t think of anyone with the gravitas needed.
I DO agree with you. Clint is THE guy! Unfortunately he’s too old for the part. Doesn’t his son have the looks like him??? Anyway, I believe he isn’t old enough to play Roland. But he could be a good young Roland.
I’ve never thought of Hugh Laurie as Roland, but after someone mention him, I changed my mind about him. After all, Dr. House was a jerk, but just a character. And he has the blue eyes.
HUGH LAURIE! Next awesome choice, wow didn’t even occur to me but it makes so much sence. :O
I agree 100%
I was excited for Javier Bardem, and now I’m even a little more excited for Crowe, but I have always (since I first started reading the series 7 years ago) pictured Roland as Viggo Mortensen. Tell me I’m not crazy here!
Wow…No, definately not crazy…I just said how much I liked Crowe for the part, lol, but Viggo Mortenson would be a great choice too! Never thought of him, I’ve always been stuck on Clint Eastwood in my minds eye as Roland. Mortenson is a great actor, never seems to receive the recognition he deserves, & he has sure got what it takes to be Roland too.
Yes Viggo. he’s done a western and looked good in it. can do clint’s laconic quite well.
I agree if not Clint then Viggo Mortenson would fit the immage–just look at chisled face!! He`s lean and long. Crowe is just not the image.
I saw a pic of Viggo, and he looks exactly how I picture Roland to look…shaggy hair and all.. He can get the blue eyes with contacts.. Viggo gets my vote for Roland…
I have always seen Viggo in the role of Roland….and he is a fantastic actor and would do the role justice I think….also agree with others that even though I would love to see this as a movie, it is a huge risk and would probably do much better as an HBO series…gotta love HBO!!!
YES YES YES!!! That’s exactly who I had in mind, too!!!
I concur with Viggo! Me and my friend have had this debate for years. Clearly Roland is Clint, but Clint just won’t be able to fill this role now
I think Viggo Mortensen would be a better choice too!Actually I wish they could find some no-name actor that would BECOME Roland. Not someone I’ve seen in so many other roles.
I agree totally.
Viggo would be a great choice. Another actor I’ve been thinking about (that no one has mentioned yet – I think) is Guy Pearce. He’s definitely got the body type down.
I like the Guy Pearce idea, and I could go with Viggo. But what about Paul Bettany, the main actor in Legion and Priest? He can get that steely look that I imagine Roland has.
I have been pushing Guy Pearce as Roland for years!! If you don’t think he can do it go watch “The Proposition”… you’ll see he is amazing and would be an awesome Roland.
Viggo for the gunslinger..and Only Viggo,it cannot be anyone else!I have however..ALWAYS,ALWAYS!Thought of Russell Crowe as THE MAN..in Black of course.Charisma turned evil? Who better?Timothy Olyphant?Sounds like an awesome candidate for Eddie..!Christian Bale,Javier Bardem?
Would have been fine, but fate has intervened,it HAS to be Viggo. We know he can carry a large scale trilogy..right..
As I reread “The Gunslinger” I always picture Viggo Mortensen or Josh Brolin or Christian Bale, although I’m not sure Brolin would have the gravitas to pull it off. Mortensen, chameleon that he is, would be perfect.
I agree.Russel Crowe just does not fit in the role of Roland Deschain.I think it wood be another “Robin Hood” movie , despite that Russel Crowe is a great actor.
While Russell Crowe, I would love to have seen Hugh Jackman as Roland!!
I agree too. Russell Crowe is a great actor but he is no Roland. But I’m liking the idea of Hugh Jackman. I was so liking Javier for the role.
I could live that THAT!!
I agree.Russel Crowe just does not fit in the role of Roland Deschain.I think it would be another “Robin Hood” movie , despite that Russel Crowe is a great actor.
Hugh Jackman would be MUCH better suited as Roland!!
I totally agree!
I’ve got to agree…..Crowe is not at all what I pictured for Roland…..I have always pictured almost a young Eastwood type> Bale would definitely be better
I would still LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them pick someone a little less well known like MADS MIKKELSEN! He would be the best Roland, IMO.
Am I the only one who wants to see Mark Hamill as The Man in Black? Whenever I read the books, I always read him as The Joker from Batman: TAS. I think he’d be fantastic in the role.
Wow love this idea!
Think of Crowe in Gladiator in a wild west costume, and you’ll get how this actually REALLY works. I still visualize Viggo Mortenson, but Crowe is an excellent choice.
Not bale. if i have to listen to that lisp as he acts out my favorite books, i may kill myself. eastwood would have been awesome 10 years ago, but i think that boat has sailed
Agreed, Crowe is not the right pick. I like him well enough but he is not Roland. For Roland they need someone that can pull off the long suffering and tortured soul that is Roland. One of the best literary characters ever dreamed up. I thank you Mr. King.
Totally agree. Russell Crowe’s round face is completely incompatible with the literal and figurative hard planes and angles of Roland’s character. NO RUSSELL CROWE!!!
Since early 2000 I began reading the Dark Tower series. Before that I had read all of the books that lead up to the series, man in black and Black House. After sevral time of reading and listen to the audio books, I was really confused when they last cast Bardem as Roland. Clint Eastwood would be the perfect fit but as we all can assume age has destroyed those hopes.
Ron Howard and Russell Crowe have worked together on other projects and Crowe has a nice background with other western movies. As for the long suffering sole of Roland, Crowe did a masterful job with A Beautiful Mind. He can pull this off and dont think Bale can even be considered. Next would be the fun part of castting Don Callahan .. as for The man In black, a great fit would be Anthony Hopkins. He has that cunning evilness to him that would fit right in
Clive Owen IS Roland.
Have you even read the entire Dark Tower series? Christian Bale would not suit the dark and brooding charactor of Roland. In my humble opinion the ideal person for this role would be Daniel Craig.
Absolutely NOT Daniel Craig. He is a great actor, but he is not 007 and he is not Roland.
No, not Christian Bale as Roland, he should play Eddie. He’d be perfect!
Eddie’s supposed to be 21, Bale’s too old. They should go with a lesser-known actor. Josh Peck would be great IMHO…
Good point.
I always thought Bruce Campbell would be a good choice.
HOW ABOUT..(as my daughter suggested)the idea of “Viggo Mortensen”? Highly resembles the image that Stephen King has painted in the readers mind over the years.
I agree with Christopher Perret on his statement for: Clint Eastwood’s & Anthony Hopkins.
Eastwood’s younger version and day, okay.He would have been to the “T” as he is to his Dirty Harry images. Most of us can hear Eastwood’s voice when we hear his name. But, Eastwood is a movie legend with credits as an actor and director. Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby,Blood Work, The Bridges of Madison County, Etc. He holds a great “mind marker” all ready.
As for Don Callahan, 100% for The man in black, Anthony Hopkins… would be a great fit. Expensive, but worth the role by far.
If Stephen King works with Ron Howard [as the writer who would have the best image to portray Rolland] would be seen clearly in the series would likely fall correctly into place.
“The Shinning” came right along side how Mr. King wrote what he saw. Who better….than the artist himself?
Reviewing some images and history “Viggo Mortensen” has great potential…. he could also pull Rolland off.
NOOOOOoooooo!!!! Not Russell Crowe. This will kill it. Even Sam Elliott would be better.
I thought the same thing . . . though I see Sam as more elred if he were heavier . . .that is what hollywood is for, right??
I agree, no to crowe
Russel Crowe is a million times better for the role than Bardem. Please let this happen.
I am just shocked that Crowe would agree to do TV, even HBO. That´s a huge commitment on his part if the entire project makes it to completion.
The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed. I don’t really like Russell Crowe, who comes across to me as arrogant and smug when interviewed but I do agree he could do justice to Roland – Javier Bardem should be the man in black, the character we all know better as Randolph Flagg! The point about the many Clint Eastwood references is that clearly Stephen pictured him when he was writing the books, and of course both Stephen and Clint were much younger when Stephen wrote the first book. I just hope they get on with it, as I myself am not getting any younger, and want to see the whole lot, lol!In any event the casting can’t be worse than that of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher from the Lee Child books – can it?.
I think Sony should definitely remake JUMANJI. Even though the original movie was 20 years ago, the concept was never done justice. If WB can remake BATMAN and SUPERMAN every few years, JUMANJI feels like a solid candidate as well. I wouldn’t see it, but my kids would.
It’s amazing they are planning only 3 movies and 2 tv seasons for 7 books, several of which are over 600 pages, with the last clocking in at over 1,000, yet WB has no problem making 3 movies out of 1 medium sized book with The Hobbit.
Relax, Eddie. If there’s really a trilogy and a TV series tie-in, you’re in the neighborhood of a 1 billion dollar WB/Time Warner investment all in. It’s bold and daring for WB to take that kind of risk…..and completely unreasonable to expect more than that.
Just a fact check – The Lord of the Rings movies were not based on the book “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien – they were based on the trilogy that the Hobbit (otherwise known as “There and Back Again”) was a prologue to. The three books the movies were based on are “Fellowship of The Ring”, “The Two Towers”, and “Return of the King”.
they’re making a 2 film series over the hobbit
Fact check to the fact check. Peter Jackson announced they would be turning the Hobbit into not one, not two (as originally planned) but three movies.
What are you talking about Eddie? They made three movies from three books. Its the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I do agree though, I dont see how they will be able to capture the story in three movies.
Eddie i right – WB just greenlit Peter Jackson’s plan to stretch his Hobbit adaptation from two films to three. They have been including a lot of story elements from the Appendices of LotR, but apparently Jackson wants more.
I myself am trying to figure out what the ninth Dark Tower book is…
I wonder if the ‘ninth’ Dark Tower book might be Little Sisters of Eluria, the novella tucked away in Everything’s Eventual. Not a book per se, but still part of the series.
Peter Jackson’s been shooting a Hobbit franchise for the past year and a half or so and at Comic Con, Jackson hinted that the film would be released as a 3 parter.. Deadline confirmed on Monday. Classic studio money grab, but if they tell the whole story it will be nice to see some of the more memorable characters that were left out of the trilogy. Eddie’s been reading, y’all haven’t, so don’t be so quick to bring the hammer down. Also, Props to Mike for calling this the golden age of television and zeroing in on exactly why! Entertainment is a high risk high reward business and green lighting a billion dollar project based on a king novel is at least a small step in the right direction (where the end goal is obviously to snap the fanboy nations’ stranglehold on the big screen)
nope they now making 3 hobbit movies!! and im not talking about lord of the rings
Akiva Goldsman is writing?
Doomed. Doomed. Doomed.
Yeah…with his nominations for Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind and Oscar win for ABM…it’s sure to fail. Not to mention all the noms and wins for Crowe speaking his words.
Isn’t it time for another refill up at the Starbucks counter?
Oh my, is there a Comment of the Year ceremony, and if so, how do I nominate you, Mr. Vincent Hanna?
I’ll see your Cinderella Man & A Beautiful Mind and raise you BATMAN & ROBIN & LOST IN SPACE.
That’s just too funny!!
Can I throw in his BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN script as well? It’s better than Kevin Smith’s SUPERMAN LIVES … and little else.
A Beautiful Mind is sentimental muck.
His pop/entertainment Batman movies are the low-grade for the series.
Whenever his name pops up on a Fringe script the episode proves to be none too good.
The movies he’s worked on which I have liked have multiple names on the credits (somethimes as many as four!)
So who else – besides King – will help him out on these scripts?
Gotta run. The fries just buzzed.
THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
Great book series. Just a perfect and amazing story that’s been supplemented over the years by some kick ass graphic novels.
Stephen King is a tried and true brand. Why would anyone pass on this? It’s a BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE!
And may I throw in Thandie Newton as Odetta and Joel Kinneman as Eddie?
Say thankya.
I like your idea about Joel Kinneman as Eddie but a suspect Thandie Newton could not pull off Detta Walker.
The only person who can pull of Odetta/Detta/Susannah is Hallie Berry.
Gina Torres is the only choice.
Angela Bassett is Susannah. Halle freaking Berry?! really?
I agree with Angela, but she is too old. remember susannah is only slightly older than eddie . . . wish she could pull it off though, she’d be awesome!!
halle doesn’t work for me either!
April Grace is the only person who could pull off Susanna Dean. She has the most amazing eyes of any woman I can think of, and she has the acting chops to carry a difficult dual role.
Thankee sai
While reading the books I couldn’t help but imagine Michelle Obama as Odetta…. LOL I dunnoo why?!!?
TOTALLY agree with Thandie Newton as Odetta!!!!!
They should do two movies 2.5 hours each both filmed in one long shoot over six months with a 13 episode series on HBO in between the two movies. That’s more than enough investment. King’s books don’t always translate to box office blockbuster levels. In fact they rarely become blockbusters. They are always good because he’s so smart but for some reason they don’t become movie mega-hits.
Really??? How about The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Stand By Me? The Shining, anyone???? And The original Carrie and Christine didn’t fair that badly either. OH! and I almost forgot……MISERY. Yeah, you’re right, very, very few.
I will say, though, that his more “drama” driven books have done better than his straight up horror ones.
This could do very, very well. TONS of great content to go on. Not to mention that “The Dark Tower” is the center of almost all his work.
dark tower ain’t no ordinary SK
it could be like GOT if done right, as it deserves
casting is important to avoid tanking.
let his readers view the auditions and rate
Crowe fits better than Bardem. Bale would be fantastic.
With so many cinematic sequences throught the novels, to block the action, Howard and co. just really need to consistantly “look to the page”, cause it all right there. Superbly mapped out by King himself.
I often think of the ganster shoot out sequence in the second novel. In this scene have a Lead character w an almost missing a hand, a naked junky freaking out, doors to other dimensions of time and space which in this case is in a bathroom stall. Bloody murder w guns and evil crabs. Crazy weird, yet brilliant. It all works. If youve read the novels, you agree im sure.
If they honor all of this and more. If they “shoot the novel”, this really could truly be a cinematic feat and really be one sick fucking motion picture. So, please Mr. Howard. Bring all of your skills to the game and give us something spectacular and dark. You could reinvent your brand if you honor this King’s vision with your lense.
I agree that Crowe is a far better choice than Bardem, but there’s an even better choice out there, and anyone who’s read the novels I think will agree — Timothy Olyphant. When I first saw him in Justified, it immediately jumped out at me–THAT’S Roland Deschain!
Tim is a great actor, and he portrays Kentucky very well, he’s too young for Roland. If you haven’t read the books, the Gunslinger is over 100 years old. Tim has too much of a baby face.
I understand the concern about Olyphant’s relatively youthful looks. However… given that Stephen King has said he was inspired to write these books by Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns of the late 1960′s, and given that Olyphant is older now than Eastwood was back then, it might be a question of just using the right lighting and makeup to acheive the more hard-bitten look that Eastwood had. Certainly, when I read the books, I was seeing the 1960′s Eastwood in my mind (even before I knew that King had been inspired by those movies). Oh — also keep in mind that the fourth book is essentially an extended flashback, showing Roland many years earlier, when he was just starting out.
In any case, it’s clear to me that Olyphant has the chops to play the quiet, menacing attitude of a kick-butt gunslinger.
100% agree with Olyphant.
Olyphant played Seth Bullock in the HBO series Deawood. He pulled it off well but he also had the masterful Ian McShane to play opposite of.
Yes, yes, Olyphant would be good. A little makeup would go a long way to age and weather him where needed. Way better choice than Crow or Bale.
The only reason that some of King’s past adaptations to screen ‘failed’ is because they didn’t take the vision. They cut and crammed trying to fit them into too little screen time, and lost the nuances of the story in the process. Therefore anyone not a King fan already, and had read the book, was totally lost and didn’t get the main theme(s) of the story. It wasn’t the story that failed, but the director, producer, studio for not telling the story the way it had to be told.
Please, please, please. Those that be the powers of this work, do not fail to tell the story, to show the characters, to make the time fit the story…not the story the time.
Thank ye Sai.
Ok scratch Hugh Jackman even though he is great. I love Timothy Olyphant. Definitely has the acting chops and they can make him look older. He could be perfect. And yes I pictured an Eastwood type character. Loving this idea.
HBO would be guaranteed the miniseries Emmy´s during the years eligible. Since each would be a contained story separated by a movie tie in, they would probably qualify for the category and having this degree of production values + actors = automatic win.
These books are not movies. They’ve become extremely fashionable to like (and I am a massive, massive King fan), but they’re not his best work. He has far better stories that would translate much more properly to film.
In my opinion, “The Dark Tower” is head and shoulders above anything else that King has ever written, and far and away his best work. But I can see how opinions would differ on that. “The Dark Tower” is a completely different genre than his other work, appealing to a different audience, more the audience that “Game of Thrones” or “Lord of the Rings” appeals to. “Dark epic fantasy” definitely describes it better than “horror.”
That said, I can’t wait for it to come to the screen. I definitely anticipate it as being as big as “Harry Potter,” “Lord of the Rings” and “Game of Thrones,” and the next big project to fill that niche in the popular imagination.
I have never been more engrossed in a book series than The dark tower series. I agree that it is unlike anything i have read by King before. This book ties so many of his other into it, its amazing. I watched a move, The Fog? I think. a new remake, and in the begining the main character is painting and he is painting Roland, if you have never read this series you would not understand the significance of this, absolutley wonderful. As much as i would be thrilled, having thought how wonderful it would be to have these books be a movie, im lost as to the casting, how could anyone come close to the own pictures we have each painted in our mind of these truly wonderful characters??
Just curious what everyone would think if Peter Jackson tried to do this?
He would be great… or Tarantino? Imagine Tarantino doing the Tull scene…
Peter Jackson…very good idea!
I really hope this will be made into a movie! I don’t think I will be able to see it if it would be made into an HBO series as I am in the UK?
Don’t trust Jackson anymore. Given his recent expansion of the Hobbit, if Jackson did Gunslinger, there would be eighteen films.
That’s his ka.
On the other hand, I’d love to see Danny Boyle take a shot. Or Cuaron. Or hell, Nolan. Here’s a director who hasn’t ever forgotten the face of his father.
Say thankya, big big.
Crowe would be great… anyone with doubts about his being 100% perfect in a western hasn’t seen his 3:10 to Yuma…
But Crowe is really back in huge demand… he just finished Les Mis, did Broken City with Wahlberg before that, is currently filming Noah with Aronofsky, will be playing Dracula for Eli Roth and is working with Goldsman in Winter’s Tale…whew… Dark Tower would be a tremendous time commitment and given Crowe’s other obligations in the coming 12 months, one wonders if it’s possible? But… since Crowe was originally touted for Dark Tower back before Bardem was mentioned, and he’s said he hopes to work with Ron Howard again… if schedules can be worked out, I think they’ll make it happen.
Crowe is just too burly and brash. Emaciated and brooding and totally internalized he is not. Is he willing to lose 60 pounds to play the part? And basically change his acting style? If that doesn’t happen, and has the part, they are basically changing the entire imagining of the story.
If it were possible to pick a lead without regard to Hollywood politics, they should screen test Timothy Olyphant, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Brolin, Christian Bale, and Jim Caviezel (“Person of Interest”); IMO it would be impossible to determine who could actually pull it off best without a screen test, even with top quality actors, since absolutely every actor out there would have to do adaptations to his previous style.
Please, can somebody get Ron Howard and Brian Grazer off this project and put Javier Bardem back in? Ron Howard is way too cookie-cutter to make this movie the right way. The Dark Tower series is not meant to be a watered down PG-13 turd, which is exactly what it will turn into with these folks behind it. While it’s probably way too expensive to make for cable, HBO is about the only way you’re going to do it right. I’d love to see a massive $200 million dollar hard-R adaption released in theaters, but Howard and Grazer are not the two guys to do it. No offense meant to them, as they have made some great films, but their ambitions are far beyond their grasps on this movie. Put Frank Darabont on it for crying out loud. He’s brilliant at adapting and directing King’s novels. The Mist was majorly overlooked and is a brilliant film.
YUP… Ron’s not the guy for this.
@Chuck: I haven’t seen “The Mist,” but Frank Darabont hasn’t really been overlooked for his novel-to-screen adaptations of King’s works – i.e., the acclaimed “The Green Mile” and the Oscar-nommed “The Shawshank Redemption.” Just had to throw that in there since I love both of those films. I’ve read The Mist and will check out the film – I didn’t even know one existed.
I’m not sure how Darabont would handle a Western, but I agree with you that he’d likely be a better candidate than Ron Howard, who doesn’t seem capable of such dark stuff.
Ugh, comment redacted. I read your post wrong – you said that The Mist has been overlooked – not the director. Apologies.
I need some coffee, obviously.
I think we could all use some coffee:) The film adaptation for “The Mist” is one of those rare instances where the film is actually better than the book/novella. It’s also a perfect example as to why Darabont would be such a great choice for such dark material. For crying out loud, he changed the ending to the book and actually made it a better story. How many times does that happen?
p.s. Interesting tidbit: The main character in “The Mist” is an artist. In the opening moments of the film, he’s drawing a design from Stephen King’s Dark Tower series of the gunslinger Roland.
This really should be done for HBO they should put up the money for 15 one-hour episodes. Then if they do well do another 15 hours the following year. There’s your 30 hours of Dark Tower from start to finish. There’s no need for this to be a movie franchise. I bet King himself would prefer to see this only on HBO he’s smart enough to realize that’s where it belongs.
I’m disappointed to hear that Javier Bardem is no longer attached. Am I the only one?
You’re not the only one. I was so excited to hear Bardem’s name mentioned a few months ago. I think he could fill the role better because I believe he could play the part closer to the minimalist flavor that i see the gunslinger possessing. Crowe’s not a bad replacement though. On any account, I CANNOT WAIT to see it. King ROCKS!!!
Most of you fanboys have absolutely no idea as to the viable economics behind this one. You can’t make a $200M R-rated movie and have it be profitable. No way.
The Mist, by the way, is one of my favorite SK stories, but the movie sucked big time.
Funny, I found the movie to be far, far superior to the story.
Well, as happy as I am with the fact that there is still life in this ambitious project, I´m still not happy with Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman involved. They made a lot of successful films, some of them I found very entertaining, some not so. The problem with Howard is, that I can´t imgine him as the right guy to do the loads of hard R stuff from the books. And Goldsman tends to dumb down things.
Everytime I read their names I remember the “Da Vinci Code”-Desaster and to a lesser degree it´s follow up, where they turned a not very bright but kind of thrilling pageturner into a leaden, tedious und boring pompous mess.
If Howard is in “Ransom”-mode than this may work and if Goldsman is in “I am legend”-mode (except for turning the mutated guys into those bad CGI-zombies) than this may also work, but given their track record I´m pretty skeptical.
By the was…Crowe is a good choice to me.
The Dan Brown adaptations were an absolute cash-grab mess. If they hadn’t had the name-brand reputation the first film would have bombed and there never would have been a sequel. I like Tom Hanks, but I wondered if he had forgotten how to act after watching The Da Vinci Code. I know they wanted a big name, but a younger Sam Neill could have pulled it off perfectly or if they had the guts to go with an even lesser-known entity, Vincent D’Onofrio would have been fantastic. Honestly, Hanks was just terribly miscast and that’s the fault of the producers of the film. Considering that the Dark Tower has the same producers on it for the most part, you can count me as one who says this is a bad idea and they should just shelve it until they decide to do the movie the way it should be done. They’re picking Crowe now, because they’re comfortable with him and the studio still thinks he’s a “name” who can carry a picture. He’s safer and more well known than Bardem, and if that is their reasoning behind losing Bardem, it’s a bad foreshadowing of things to come. The Dark Tower series is no sure thing to be a hit, but if you water it down and try to turn it into a “safe” 4-quadrant PG-13 flick, I can already tell you that a lot of people will lose their jobs over this. Unfortunately, it just probably won’t be anyone who was really responsible for screwing the adaptation up.
Read it last year, and I couldn’t picture anyone but Wolverine Hugh Jackman as Deschain.
With the beard, hat, and the squint/scowl, he’d resemble Clint Eastwood enough. He’s also tall and has dark features, and can certainly portray dark and anti-heroic traits and elements.
I SO agree that Hugh Jackman could be Roland, It’s too bad Clint is too old. I have been along with this series since the beginning and Clint will always be my Roland. Hallie Berry is Odetta. Anyone who has seen Losing Isaiah should agree. Orlando Bloom would make a great Eddie, or maybe Justin Timberlake. They are going to have to search long and hard to find Jake.
It’s good to see that I’m not the only one whose image of Roland Deschain resembles Hugh Jackman the most.
For me, Hugh Jackman has lost some credibility after his appearence in Password:Swordfish. It is a subjective meaning because I am working in IT myself, but I could not stand his portrayal of a hacker. Also, I think Deschein’s character holds much more emotional facettes which have to be delivered through a mimic without much expression, and he there is a mystique and unpredictabilty around the character. Jackman was okay with a hat and beard and that in Van Helsing for instance, but I doubt that he can pull off Roland.
I’m assuming that when the article says ‘Warner Bros has a decision looming’ it does in fact mean WB are waiting for Legendary and/or Village Roadshow to call them back to say if they’ll pay for half of this project.
Greenlighting a project like this would go some way to maintaining WB’s ‘film karma’. I understand that it makes economic sense to remake/reboot certain films just as long as they take chances with other projects. The sort of thing that Fox or Sony would never do…..
I still see Hugh Laurie every time I think of Roland..
I have read these books 3 times now and there’s only 8 books and no to crow as Roland
Bring it to Maine we havent had a King movie since Storm of the Century…and the State really needs it i have some great locations for it
I think Ron Perlman would do well in this role. Bale isn’t big enough and Crowe I feel would do well but a strong presence is required. Also a lot of voice over would be needed and I feel Perlmans voice would suite the role as well
I totally agree on this idea: Ron Perlman for Roland, as Roland is aging (sorry Ron), but still got his skills.
Also, I do think it is possible to make a trilogy of this epos. The book is always better, that is a fact. But, in my opinion, lots of parts can be cut out, (Rolands past, stuff for a prequel perhaps), or shortened, (the train, for example).
Having read the books, it will never be what we wanted/expected.
I can’t believe no one mentioned Viggo Mortensen as Roland. It seems obvious to me. Jake would be the hardest to cast.
I’d like Viggo Mortensen as Roland , but I think Timothy Olyphant can bring the certain attitude to bring Deshain to life . He can play old and dark and be good at it.
Come on people!! Jim Caviezel is Roland!!! Have you seen “Person of Interest” or “Outlander”
Jim Caviezel DEFINITELY!!! Russell Crowe would be a big mistake. King readers will not see him as Roland.
no, no, no, no, no!!
almost as bad as crowe!
